The Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is the site of a pre-Columbian Native American city directly across the Mississippi River from modern St. Louis, Missouri. This historic park lies in southern Illinois between East St. Louis and Collinsville. The park covers 2,200 acres , or about 3.5 square miles , and contains about 80 mounds, but the ancient city was much larger. In its heyday, Cahokia covered about 6 square miles and included about 120 manmade earthen mounds in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and functions.Cahokia was the largest and most influential urban settlement of the Mississippian culture, which developed advanced societies across much of what is now the central and southeastern United States, beginning more than 1,000 years before European contact. Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site is a 745-acre park near Perryville in Boyle County, Kentucky. An interpretive museum is located near the site where many Confederate soldiers killed in the Battle of Perryville were buried. Additionally, monuments, interpretive signage, and cannons mark notable events that occurred during the battle. The site became part of the Kentucky State Park System in 1936.

In memory of Colonel James Adelbert Mulligan and the members of his command who fought and died during the battle and siege of Lexington, Missouri, September 12-20, 1861. Colonel Mulligan commanded Union volunteers from Illinois and Missouri who fortified College Hill and stubbornly resisted the attacks of the Missouri state guard forces of General Sterling Price. With their ammunition, water and rations depleted and reinforcements unable to reach them, Mulligans forces were compelled to surrender.

May the people of the United States never forget the Union defenders of Lexington, who suffered and died that this nation might live forever free.

They determined to do their duty at all hazards -Colonel James A. Mulligan.

Erected in 2009 by the department of Missouri, sons of Union veterans of the Civil War.

2017 Total Solar Eclipse in Missouri USA

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Missouri. This event tracks across the United States from Oregon to South Carolina. Nashville is the biggest city to participate. Several in Missouri such as Kansas City and St. Louis, see it as well.
This eclipse is the first to be seen in the United States since 1991 in Hawaii, and 1979 in the Lower 48.
Missouri is a great place to enjoy the eclipse. Totality is about 2 minutes long here, up to 2.5 minutes and longer. This will be a fantastic event and you get to enjoy Missouri as well. Plus, the chance for good, sunny weather is quite excellent.
