Puurs is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. It is located in the Flemish Region. The municipality comprises the towns of Breendonk, Liezele, Kalfort, Ruisbroek and Puurs proper. There is also the hamlet of Kalfort. On January 1, 2006, Puurs had a total population of 16,029. The total area is 33.41 km2 which gives a population density of 480 inhabitants per km². Puurs sits about 5 meters above mean sea level. Its geography shows only minor elevation differences . Belgium: Impressions of Dendermonde

Dendermonde is located at the mouth of the river Dender, where it flows into the Scheldt.
Places of interest in this town are:
The city hall and belfry that have also been designated a World Heritage Site since 1999.
The belfry houses a carillon and was formerly part of the Cloth Hall.
A Benedictine abbey right in the center of town.
The Dendermonde beguinage is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998

Steam in Belgium: Dendermonde - Puurs

A little trip along the railways from Puurs to Baasrode-Noord. Whilst the line continues to Dendermonde, it is only used for access as there is no connection between the preserved railway line and the SNCB at Puurs. This was filmed on the 7 July 2012 during the Steam Festival weekend.

All Aboard For The Belgian Steam Gala 2018 At Mariembourg and Treignes Part 1

The date is Saturday 22nd September 2018 and we were invited by some Belgian friends to stay with them and go to the annual Festival Vapeur/Stoomfestival. ( everything is in dual text Walloonish French and Flemish Dutch). So after a sorrowful day visiting the Somme War Grave sites in nearby France the day before, we had a day of escapism in the Ardennes.
We start Part 1 at Mariembourg station which is the 3 Valleys junction. It has an engine shed in working order which houses some on- going projects. The preserved line travels roughly east for 10 miles to Treignes where there is a vast Museum containing many locos both steam and electric/diesel. In this film we see 0-6-0T AD05, 0-6-0T Tkh 5387 ( a bit like a USA T) and the wonderful Polish 2-8-2T Tkt 48 87 - painted in the wonderfully named shade of Fantasy Blue! You may notice the lack of orange Hi Viz , steel spikes, barbed wire, H & S policy documents floating around - because the Belgians kind of like being laid - back, almost Hygge . I include a brief shot of the fabulous Green Pacific in the Museum - there are some YT films of this loco in action in the 90's but it was crippled by leakages and poor steaming so its's in the museum. Also the derelict Giesl - ejector chimneyed Kriegslok in the siding .The active locos have great individual sounds and very loud whistles.ENJOY! Vive le vapeur ! Filmed on my new Panasonic HC VXF1 - not a bad internal 5.1 mic . Sorry Canon, blown you out.....

Jaipur, another Indian city with another impressive fort

We spent a couple of days wandering around the Pink City of Jaipur on foot, and when we needed a ride our tuk tuk driver Raj took us to where we needed to go.

The Amber and Nahargarh Forts are incredibly impressive, but very different from each other. Amber Fort is a grand, beautiful, impeccably maintained example of what life must have been like in India several centuries ago, while the Nahargarh Fort is much smaller, but offers extraordinary views across the city and is a great place to relax at the end of the day with a drink and a bite to eat while watching the sun go down.

Conversely a walk around the markets and bazaars of the Pink City is chaotic and full of noise. Trying to push Jack along the clogged footpaths, which are in a major state of disrepair, is a full on physical workout! There’s a vast range of products to buy for any taste, all at remarkably cheap prices. But remember, bargain hard because the prices start at highly inflated levels (for India) and there are plenty of other shops selling exactly the same products should the shopkeeper not be willing to sell at a price you’re comfortable with.

Jaipur is good place to visit, and has a few very impressive sites such as the forts mentioned above. The old city with it’s distinct colour is a fascinating place to watch locals go about their business. But be prepared to be asked to go into every shop you walk past, and every tuk tuk driver to ask if you need a lift somewhere. At times we just wanted to put a sign around our necks saying ‘no thanks’ so we didn’t have to say it 100 times per day (not an exaggeration).
