Einojuhani Rautavaara was a Finnish composer of classical music. He is among the most notable Finnish composers since Jean Sibelius .Rautavaara wrote a great number of works spanning various styles. These include eight symphonies, nine operas and twelve concertos, as well as numerous vocal and chamber works. Having written early works using 12-tone serial techniques, his later music may be described as neo-romantic and mystical. His major works include Cantus Arcticus and Symphony No. 7 Angel of Light.

The Puijo tower is an observation tower at the top of Puijo hill in Kuopio, Eastern Finland. Opened in 1963, the tower is 75 metres tall and has a revolving restaurant with 100 seats. It was the first tower with a revolving restaurant in the Nordic countries. The restaurant was an inspiration to Erkki Lindfors, the mayor of Tampere, who got the idea to build a similar one in his home town, resulting in the Näsinneula tower, which opened in 1971. The current Puijo tower has been visited by over 5.5 million tourists. The current tower is the third overall. When it was completed in 1963 the second one, built in 1906, was dismantled. The first tower was built in 1856. On the western side of the tower there are three ski jumping hills.

New Valamo or New Valaam is an Orthodox monastery in Heinävesi, Finland. The monastery was established in its present location in 1940. However, the tradition of the Valamo monastery dates back to 1717. The monastery was then originally established on Valaam which is an archipelago in the northern portion of Lake Ladoga, lying within the Republic of Karelia in the Russian Federation. The New Valamo Monastery is nowadays an active centre of the Orthodox religious life and culture in Finland. The monastery welcomes visitors throughout the year. The peaceful atmosphere of the monastery and close proximity to nature offer the hurried people in the busy world of today a rare opportunity to relax − far from the bustle and noise of everyday life.

Scenic drive from Finnish Lapland to the Lofoten Islands, Norway

Great drive experience, beautiful scenery and impressive roads from Kilpisjärvi (Lapland, Finland) to Svolvær (Lofoten Islands, Norway) north of the Arctic Circle.

Kilpisjärvi ( is the northwesternmost Lapland village in Finland, and the last village before the border of Norway close to the Arctic Ocean.

Svolvær is the main town and port of the Lofoten island group ( in Nordland county, Norway. Svolvær is a good starting point to explore the Lofoten archipelago.

The drive was about 450 km and 7 hours. It took place in March.

Route:

Start from Arctic Polar Holiday Village in Kilpisjärvi (
E8 up north from Kilpisjärvi, the famous Saana fell on the right - crossing the border to Norway.
E6 to the west to Bjerkvik - E10 to the Tjeldsund Bridge.
After the Tjeldsund Bridge road 83 to the north - shortcut road Gate 1490 - back to road 83 to Refsnes.
Refsnes to Flesnes ferry (
Road 83/85 - back to the E10 road to Svolvær.
End in Svinøya Rorbuer in Svolvær harbor (

The fastest way is to follow the E10 road from the Tjeldsund Bridge to Svolvær.

The most beautiful road in Finland? - Driving to the top of EU

Some say the road from Karigasniemi to Utsjoki is the most beautiful road in Finland. We decided to find out. This also includes the part from Utsjoki to Nuorgam, which is the northernmost point in the European Union. Total trip time was about 2 hours, and the views are better experienced in person :)
