Sailboat Haul Out Tips and Preparations (Preps) : 1 big Boat; 1 small Travel Lift & 5 Cheeky neighbors in the boat yard, in South Africa! (Patrick Childress Sailing #39) Ep 219 Step 173 Ep. 36
Upon arrival in Richards Bay, South Africa, we prepare our blue water sailboat, SV Brick House for another haulout for boat Maintenance, sailboat upgrades, and of course new bottom paint. We will be doing lots of boat work here. Patrick Childress shows how he cleans the boat, tests the water for drinking, kills the invading ants before they infest our boat, and then gets us ready to fit the boat in to a travel lift that is a little too small to accommodate our rigging. We have to unattached the forestays to fit on the travel lift, and Patrick demonstrates the best way to do this without taking off the sails, or disassembling the entire profurl roller furling drum. Hauling a sailboat out of the water, even on a travel lift that is a bit too small doesn’t have to be chaotic.
Here is the ant poison we have carried with us around the world that has worked 99.9% of the time with ants. I recommend carrying a big supply of it because it’s sometimes hard to find!

Final Day and our Impressions on Camino de Santiago in Catalonia, Spain - Day 4
This was our fourth day of Cami de Sant Jaume or Catalan Camino de Santiago. The plan was to do the 80 kms in 4 days and get from Llivia village in the province of Girona to Organya in the province of Lleida. It is also called the Camino del Segre, because it follows the stream of the river all the way through crossing the region of Cerdanya and Alt Urgell. It is just a part of the whole Camino de Santiago that can be taken starting from Pyrenees in Spain and moving towards the city of Pamplona where it joins the French Way.
On our fourth and final day of Cami de Sant Jaume in Catalonia we were quite tired already after previous extremely hot days but we had a quiet night in the camping Gran Sol in Seu d'Urgell and were ready to do the final stretch of this hike today. After having bought so many food yesterday(cause we were very hungry) we had to carry with us more extra weight and we were really worried whether we would be able to complete this 20+ kms stretch ot not. But we hoped that the weather and the trail would work in our favor. We needed to get to the town Organya where according to the map this part of Camino was finishing. So we started walking and passed by the village Arfa, went along the car road and got to the town El Pla de Sant Tirs where we lost out track again and had a hard time finding the mark. It seemed like we were getting lost in every village or town as the marking just dissapears there. Finally we found the sign after walking blindly on the dirt road for some time but then on a crossroad there was no mark again. So we had to look it up in GPS and using our downloaded map from Wikiloc we were able to find the right direction. Every day the trail would start quite easy, going flat and then gradually becoming harder and harder and that day wasn't an exception. The ground under our feet started to turn red rusty colours and we started to climb up the mountain hoping that it will lead us to the right way. We were wandering around this mountain for quite a while cause there were so many crossroads and no signs whatsoever. But in the end we got out on the car road and saw a big blue sign of Camino with the map. And there we were very surprised to see that the marked trail till Organya was turning into dotted line at one point and it was saying that the trail is in the process of conditioning...

Dutch abandoned buildings and urban decay - The Netherlands from above
We do not like decay, but how do we deal with it? In the Netherlands we do not like decay. If an old building does not get a monument status, it's ripe for demolition. But because a completely landed and cleaned country also gives us the shakes, we make room for exceptions. The island of Tiengemeten is returned to nature. Tourists are guided around to see natural decay. There must be places that are authentic, as authentic as the 1930s home with the stained-glass windows in which so many still live. A former factory director cherishes the memories of his factory, whois now abandoned and decaying. And then there is also our fight against the physical decline, which takes on ever bigger forms. We go running in masses, as if time is on our heels. Decay may come, but it should not get too close to us.
The Netherlands from above shows us a country from a spectacular perspective. From the sky it is possible to see how the Netherlands changes through the seasons, and how in parallel they form the determining moments of our own life cycle. Through data visuals, impressive aerial images and portraits of people on the ground, the second series of the Netherlands from above outlines an image of how time has changed our country and how we move in it. The way we live from day to day, and from generation to generation in this country reflects our resilient mentality. Gerard's Restaurant - Maui Wine Dinner
Gerard's Restaurant, in Lahaina, recently celebrated a wonderful wine pairing dinner, influenced by Rhone/Provence. The food was amazing...the wine was unbelievable and the atmosphere was magnifique!!
The multi course menu featured a wonderful dish, coupled with a wine paired to enhance the flavors and tempt the pallet of everyone who attended. First Course: Truffle Duxelles in Puff Pastry, paired with Clos Ste Magdelaine,Cassis Blanc, Provence, 2008. Second Course: Island Fish Bourride with sauce Rouille and croutons, paired with Chateau d'Esclans, Cotes de Provence Rose, 2008. Third Course: Haleakala Ranch Lamb Daube with pasta, paired with Chateauneuf du Pape,Chateau de la Gardine, 2004. Dessert: Lavender ice cream with coconut/macadamia nut cookie, paired with Domaine de Durban,Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, 2008.
