Sado is a city located on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Since 2004, the city has comprised the entire island, although not all of its total area is urbanized. Sado is the sixth largest island of Japan in area following the four main islands and Okinawa Island . As of April 1, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 63,231, and a population density of 73.93 persons per km2. The total area is 855.26 km2.

    Lake Kamo is a brackish lake on the island of Sado in the Sea of Japan off the west coast of Honshu, Japan. The lake is the largest of Niigata prefecture. Originally Lake Kamo was a fresh water lake, but was opened to the sea during the Meiji period to avoid floods, and the water became brackish. The lake is famous for oyster farming, since 1932.Lake Kamo is ranked among the top 100 Landscapes of Japan.
