Chambéry Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in Chambéry, France. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint François de Sales, and is the seat of the Archbishopric of Chambéry, Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, and Tarentaise. The Chambéry Cathedral was established in 1779 as the Bishopric of Chambéry. After gaining the territories of the Bishopric of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and the Archbishopric of Tarentaise in 1801, it was elevated to an archbishopric in 1817. In 1825 Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Tarentaise were re-created as independent dioceses; in 1966 they were once again added to the Archdiocese of Chambéry, which in 2002 adopted its present name of Archdiocese of Chambéry, Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, and Tarentaise.
The building dates from the 15th century, when it was constructed as a Franciscan chapel. The site is very swampy and the building is supported by 30,000 poles. It became the cathedral on the creation of the see in 1779. During the French Revolution it was extensively defaced, and the interior was entirely restored in the early 19th century.
It contains the largest ensemble of trompe l'œil painting in Europe (almost 6,000 m²) by the artists Sevesi and Vicario, as well as a maze almost 35 metres long laid down in 1860-70 and relaid in 1989. The neighbouring local history museum, formerly the Franciscan convent, linked to the cathedral by the cloisters, houses a 12th-century ivory diptych of Byzantine inspiration.

Chambéry is an Alpine town in southeast France. In the old town is the medieval Castle of the Dukes of Savoy, with historical exhibits. Near Chambéry Cathedral, the 1838 Elephant Fountain honors the 18th-century general Benoît de Boigne. The Musée des Beaux-Arts exhibits include 14th- to 18th-century Italian works. South, the Museum of Charmettes was once home to philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Chambery is an attractive and lively town in the Savoie department of the Rhone Alps, about 50 kilometres north of Grenoble. The city has a long history linked with that of nearby Italy, and the Dukes of Savoy and Chambery only became a permanent part of France in 1861 - see history of Chambery for details. In recent years Chambery has had something of a revival and has been tidied up and important institutions such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts have re-opened. It is now bright and colourful and a really pleasant place to spent some time.
Start your visit in the wonderful Place Saint-Leger in the heart of the old town, featuring the Fontaine des Marmousets and a 19th century sun-dial and surrounded by tall houses all painted in different colours and lots of outdoor restaurants allowing you to sit down and really savour the atmosphere - and the food. The significant amount of historic heritage in Chambery have led to its being officially listed as a Town of Art and History (Ville d'Art et Histoire') in France. The historic centre of Chambery dates from the 15th and 16th centuries onwards. One curiosity you will see is the Fountain of the Elephants - built around 1838 in honor of Benoit Leborgne, Earl of Boigne (1751 -1830) on his return from India, after a wandering life in the service of an Indian prince. The fountain is arranged such that the four elephants make a sort of cross which represents the coat of arms of the House of Savoy.
The city has a lot of other squares and streets of interest. From the Place Saint Leger you can explore the many alleys that radiate in all directions, eventually reaching the elegant Rue Croix d'Or where you can admire some ancient aristocratic houses, some of which date back to the 16th century. One of these roads is also named after Boigne and contains many elegant shops.
Chambery castle is an important building (the 'Castle of the Dukes of Savoy') and was sold by its owner (Berlion, Lord of Chambéry) to the Counts of Savoy in 1232. It remained the residence of the Savoy Counts until 1562. The castle is now home to the council offices but you can join a guided visit to see inside. Its chapel, the Sainte Chapelle, used to house the 'Holy Shroud' brought to Europe at the time of the Crusades and entrusted to the Savoy Lords in 1452 (who moved it to Turin in 1578, where it gained the popular name 'the Turin Shroud' - there is a copy of the shroud in the cathedral). Visitors here can also see the 70 famous bells of the so-called 'Great Carillon'.
The gothic style 13th century Cathedral Church of the Franciscan Friars of Saint Francois de Sales has a rather austere facade but is home to the largest collection of trompe-l'oeil paintings in Europe. The highlight in the cathedral is the treasury which includes a 12th century Byzantine diptych among its interesting artefacts, and there is also a copy of the Turin shroud on display in the cathedral.
The City Museum of Fine Arts (the Musée de Beaux-Arts) contains some notable paintings including a beautiful painting representing the 'Adoration of the Magi' by Jean de Bruges and a copy of a remarkable 'San Gerolamo' by Correggio executed by local painter Gian Francesco Berengier in the 18th century. A large part of the museum is dedicated to paintings by Italian Renaissance artists, in particular 'Portrait of a Young Man' by Paolo Uccello and 'Trinity' by Bartolo di Fredi, and many others. The Savoy Museum (Musee Savoisien) is also very interesting and contains numerous artefacts and pictures as well as numerous other collections, such as Roman coins, that explain the long history of Chambery and the Savoy region.

Lovers Bridge
The Lovers Bridge, often visited by tourists and used for wedding photographs, is a crucial transit way to explore Annecy. Surrounded by hundreds of trees, the bridge in front of the damp boats on the banks of the Vassé Canal has become the symbol of Annecy.
This pedestrian bridge, which passes through the Vassé Canal and connects the jardins de l'Europe to the Pâquier square, allows passers to reach the Jacquet promenade and Jules Philippe's pier without getting their feet wet and long turns. You can enjoy a 180-degree view of the lake along the bridge and a view of Swan Island, very close to the bridge.
This bridge is usually the place where lovers meet, so it is named Lovers Bridge.
From 1845, the first wooden pedestrian bridge was erected in the name of the visit of King Charles-Albert of Savoie. Later, in 1859, the pedestrian bridge of the public garden was built very firmly by Claude Grandchamp. Bandol is a popular coastal town and wine growing region in the western part of the Cote d'Azur and to the west of Toulon. As a tourist destination, Bandol is not a newcomer to the scene: Thomas Mann, Aldous Huxley, Marcel Pagnol, and D.H. Lawrence all spent time here. Bandol is many things to many people.To boating enthusiasts it is a vibrant harbour accommodating about 1500 boats of all sizes, to land-based vacationers Bandol is a beach town and buzzing hub of activity.
Your visit to Bandol will start with a promenade around the harbour, an attractive palm-tree lined walk backed by some lovely pastel painted houses. Around the port in Bandol there are also several bars and restaurants as well as a casino. At the west of the harbour you can also visit the Bandol tourist office and see the town kiosk.
The centre of the traditional village of Bandol is around a square called the Place de l'Europe immediately behind the promenade. This square is actually a series of three squares separated by raised terraces where a large fountain, shady plane trees and lively cafes combine with the view across the harbour to make a very attractive traditional Provencal square.
At the top of the square is one of the most important historic monuments in Bandol, the Church Saint-Francois de Sales. The streets around the square are also interesting to explore with a surprise around every corner for example an ancient fountain, a tiny ancient house and flower boxes or a grand Belle Epoque villa.
Beach enthusiasts will be pleased to know there is a wide choice of beaches in Bandol, including several sandy beaches in the town itself as well as smaller rocky bays and creeks, mostly reached by following the coast path a short distance. The sandy beaches in the centre of Bandol are the most popular and can become quite crowded in the summer. The Anse de Renécros is a lovely circular beach that is just west of the centre and almost completely enclosed, so waves are quite calm.
Most of the sandy beaches are east of the centre and include Plage Centrale, Plage du Casino and Plage du Grand Vallat while the smaller rocky beaches are to the west - favourites include the Plage Eden Roc, Plage l'Anglais and the Plage des Engraviers. We especially liked the position and view from the Plage l'Anglaise but it did involve a walk to reach the beach from Plage Capelan. A popular trip from Bandol is to visit the island of Bendor, just a short distance away (about 7 minutes by boat) and which also has beaches and restaurants, a nice promenade around the island and a wine museum.
Beach lovers can enjoy a leisurely change of scenery from day-to-day between the busy beaches of Bandol and those of Sanary-sur-Mer slightly to the east, and more down-to-earth Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer slightly to the west. There are many small villages in the Bandol area that are worthy of a look around including Cadière and Castellet to the north of here. A visit to Bandol should also include a visit to the city of Toulon where Jacques Cousteau set out on a lifelong exploration of the sea and where the military traditions of the sea are everywhere evident. Visitors arriving by boat are within a close sail of the magnificent white chalk calanques along the coastline between here and the port of Marseille some fifty kilometers to the west.
