View of Paris from Saint-Cloud (Stern Garden)
France was having a country-wide Garden Weekend, so gardens held special events, and gardens normally not open welcomed visitors for three days.
Saint-Cloud is just over the Seine on a West side of Paris, and from times of the Monarchy has been important. Sèvres porcelain, movie studios, rich estates and a steep terrain give it unusual aspects and points of interest. Somewhat stodgy, quirky, wealthy, but also simply old and with aspects of decay, Saint-Cloud is now easier to reach thanks to a tramway, but really, it's never seemed to worry about being very accessible in modern times.
Ms. Stern was a painter and her home overlooking Paris was fairly recently classified as being of historical interest. On this clip, you can see how Paris really is in Le Bassin Parisien, a bowl if you will, making it a place of rather unhealthy air -- the Western and Southwestern heights were generally considered the desirable places to live, for good reasons (health and aesthetics).
You can see an RER train here, but you can also get here by taking a métro (MOLITOR is one possibility) to the Seine and a city bus from there, or you can also take a tramway from La Défense. Via automobile, you are likely to find traffic a headache.
I worked in Saint-Cloud for awhile in the '90s, and from Saint-Denis where I live, it was a long commute with many transfers. From Saint-Cloud, a royalty route allowed for travel to Versailles and other points without having to enter Paris. I have several clips up on the Internet of a good museum in Saint-Cloud. I always feel a bit unwelcome there, which I find interesting. So much is locked away behind sturdy gates and walls.

Un Jardin français
This place, Le Château de Sceaux, is typical of the great things you can see AROUND Paris. Most are accessible via public transportation. (This place is, by public bus.) You could skip the crowds and cost of Versailles and come here. Le Musée de l'Ile-de-France (the Greater Paris Museum) is inside, the enormous stables can be visited, the orangerie is huge and open after 4 pm, there's a casual outdoor restaurant, and the grounds are just huge. Full of lakes, fountains, woods -- and sweeping views.
The first Sunday of every month, many sites are free in France.
Versailles is actually far from Paris and the commuter train leaves you far from the famous castle. (A city bus from around St-Cloud takes you right there -- be smart and look into this if you must see Versailles.) Versailles is crowded, costly, picnics are forbidden, and you need a full day for the buildings and another full day for the grounds. I worked in Versailles (the city) briefly and did not find it to be a very welcoming place, either. You decide.
In Paris proper, the many museums run by La Ville de Paris are free of charge (if there is a temporary exhibition, you might have to pay to see that, but you can still see the permanent collections for free). Le Musée Carnavalet and Le Musée Cognack-Jay in Le Marais come to mind. I do two channels on YouTube and enjoy posting things about the amazing sights and sounds of France here (and other places I visit -- I was in Turkey fairly recently). SLOBOMOTION is my other YouTube channel. On Dailymotion, I post videos and slideshows under LisaFalour.
Try to spend a long visit here, and remember, there's a lot more to France than just Paris! And don't forget Belgium, a complex and often-overlooked destination!
