The Puerta de Bisagra is a monumental gateway located in the walls of the city Spanish in Toledo. Puerta de Bisagra is located in the city of Toledo , in Castilla-La Mancha . It is known with the title of New because there is another gate in the vicinity -of smaller size- called Puerta Antigua de Bisagra or Puerta de Alfonso VI . His Muslim name was bab al Shaqra .
There is some debate regarding its origin and antiquity, this being the first Arabic or Mudejar . It underwent a reconstruction in the middle of the XVI century, that should have started around 1540; would participate in it Nicolás de Vergara el Viejo , Juan de Benavides, Eugenio Sánchez and around 1547-1548 Alonso de Covarrubias . The works would end in 1576.
Toledo Puerta de Bisagra consists of two separate bodies with two high crenellated walls that unite, forming a courtyard between them, where a statue of Carlos V . The outer side is formed by a semicircular arch with padded ashlars , on which there is a large shield of the «Imperial City», with its unmistakable double-headed eagle , as well as a pediment with a sculpture of an angel custodian. Flanking this entrance two large circular towers. The body that faces the city has another semicircular arch door, flanked by two square towers topped by pyramidal roofs.
