An amazing trip to Salzburg region of Austria. This four days trip started by landing to the beautiful Salzburg Airport. The Airport location is breathtaking. We took a shuttle bus from the Airport to Salzburg central railway station and changed the bus to get to our Hotel. After keeping our luggage in the Hotel we headed to the St. Wolfgang Lake by catching a bus from the central station. Enjoyed the awesome views of St. Wolfgang Lake, eat fish for lunch and took a Ferry to many small villages around the St. Wolfgang Lake. This area is called as the Salzkammergut.
The next 2 days we went on a city tour in the Salzburg city. You need at least two days to see and enjoy the complete city. Don't miss the two Mozart Houses.
The fourth day we went to the picture perfect town of Hallstatt by train. A small but very beautiful town near Salzburg. If you go to Salzburg, you must visit Hallstatt.

The market town of Sankt Wolfgang (Austria) is located in a privileged place at the North end of Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee), at the foot of the Schafberg mountain. From St. Wolfgang a cog railway leads up onto the 1,768m high Schafberg. It is the steepest steam Cog Railway in Austria and covers a distance of 6km in approximately 45 minutes. Once you arrive at the peak of the Schafberg, a gorgeous view of the Lake opens up along with the surrounding villages of Strobl and St. Gilgen. One of Austria’s most enchanting lake resorts, St. Wolfgang enjoys an especially picturesque setting on the shores of Lake Wolfgang. It is a place of great character, where pretty painted houses and shops line the narrow cobbled streets, and most evenings the town comes alive with open-air brass band concerts and frequent indoor classic and operetta concerts. St. Wolfgang is also an ideal base for excursions to nearby Salzburg and the UNESCO village of Hallstatt. In the pilgrimage church of St. Wolfgang is one of the most famous gothic altars in the world, carved by Michael Pacher. In addition, a visit to the world famous “White Horse Inn” is a must, the backdrop of one of the most successful operetta of all time. Day Trip: St. Wolfgang, Wolfgangsee Lake and the St. Gilgen Cable Cars
The following video will highlight the how to make the most out of a day at Wolfgansee Lake.
Start your day by exploring the beautiful St Wolfgang. There are loads of things to do at St Wolfgang, but it would be best to spend only around 2-3 hours here if you wish to fit everything we did into your day.
Make sure to check out the St Wolfgang Church.
Next, you have the option of one of two things.
If you are there during the right months, we highly recommend that you buy a ticket for the SchafbergBahn. This cog railway is the steepest in Austria and the views from the top of Schafberg is truly impressive.
Be aware though that the train doesn't operate all year long.
For those of you, who like us, visit this region when the cog railway isn't operating, here is another great idea.
Grab some tickets for the Wolfgansee ferry. Sit back and enjoy the beautiful peaceful ride all the way to the end of the lake at St Gilgen.
St Gilgen is another beautiful town and if you have the time, it is worth strolling around here. But before you do, head over to the St Gilgen Cable Car (Zwölferhorn Mountain Cable Car) and enjoy a ride to the top for some truly stunning views over the lake and mountains.
Finish your day with ice cream and a casual boat ride back to St Wolfgang.

Lake Wolfgang is a lake in Austria that lies mostly within the state of Salzburg and is one of the best known lakes in the Salzkammergut resort region. The municipalities on its shore are Strobl, St. Gilgen with the villages of Abersee and Ried as well as the market town of St. Wolfgang in the state of Upper Austria.

THINGS TO REMEMBER BEFORE GOING TO LAKE WOLFGANG:
- make sure to wear jacket if you are coming on Herbst / Autumn Season
- taking pictures of some shops or establishments is forbidden - police are present (e.g wolfgang church)
- if you want to take a ferry ride, make sure you get the exact information from the bus driver (if you are on a bus tour) or get a detailed info from the ticketing office so you won't get left behind
- Do not be loud near the church
- Buy a ticket as early as possible for SchaftbergBahn & Shifffahrt especially during summer (full of tourists coming)

- The St. Gilgen Pier has a free WiFi (fast during herbst / autum season i think bec there's not much tourists)

St. Gilgen, Austria
St. Gilgen (Sankt Gilgen) is a charming town on the shore of Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee) in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. Surrounded by mountains, it lies at 545 metres. It is very popular among international tourists, who come to St. Gilgen on day trips during the summer season. The area offers a good base for walkers, hikers and sightseers. St. Gilgen is famous for its scenery, the historic town centre and the access to Lake Wolfgangsee. Mozart's mother was born here and the village has a definite historic atmosphere. In front of the Mozart Memorial House, there is a small garden with a charming fountain by Toni Schneider Manzell, depicting Mozart's mother as a small girl. The fountain on the Mozartplatz in St. Gilgen shows the young Mozart playing the violin, surrounded by birds spouting water. The fountain, which dates back to 1926, is the work of the Viennese art nouveau sculptor, Karl Wollek. This charming town can be visited as a day trip from Salzburg but would also be a great place to stay for a longer visit.

Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee), Austria
Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee) is one of the most beautiful lakes in Austria and has drawn lovers to the world-famous Salzkammergut Region for centuries. The lake is up to 114 meters deep and covers an area of thirteen square-kilometers. The eleven kilometers long and up to two and a half kilometers wide lake is located on the northern border of the Alps at 550 meters above sea level. Doing a boat ride at lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee) is not just a wonderful experience, it’s also a very useful way to get around between the main villages St Wolfgang, St Gilgen and Strobl. A ticket purchased for the boat allows a great opportunity to travel to the various drop off locations on the beautiful lake with access to a cablecar and on the cogwheel railway ride to the top of a mountain.
