Val-d'Oise is a French department, created in 1968 after the split of the Seine-et-Oise department and located in the Île-de-France region. In local slang, it is known as quatre-vingt quinze or neuf cinq . It gets its name from the Oise River, a major tributary of the Seine, which crosses the region after having started in Belgium and flowed through north-eastern France. Charles de Gaulle Airport, France's main international airport is partially located in Roissy-en-France, a commune of Val d'Oise.

The Domaine of Villarceaux is a French château, water garden and park located in the commune of Chaussy in the Val d'Oise Department of France, 65 kilometers northwest of Paris. The Domaine is currently managed by the Regional Council of the 'Île-de-France for 99 years, on an agreement with the owners of the domaine, the Fondation Charles Leopold Mayer. The park contains a manor house from the 16th century and a château in the style of Louis XV from the 18th century. The gardens are classified among the Notable Gardens of France. The gardens contain a rare 18th-century ornamental feature called a vertugadin , modelled after the hoop skirts of the 18th century, surrounded by statues brought from Italy.

The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is a baroque French château located in Maincy, near Melun, 55 kilometres southeast of Paris in the Seine-et-Marne département of France. Built between 1658 to 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, Marquis de Belle Île, Viscount of Melun and Vaux, the superintendent of finances of Louis XIV, the château was an influential work of architecture in mid-17th-century Europe. At Vaux-le-Vicomte, the architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape architect André le Nôtre, and the painter-decorator Charles Le Brun worked together on a large-scale project for the first time. Their collaboration marked the beginning of the Louis XIV style combining architecture, interior design and landscape design. The garden's pronounced visual axis is an example of this style.

Though in the Eure département of France, Vernon is close to borders of both the Yvelines and the Val d'Oise départements. Driving through the region known as the Vexin to the West of Paris (and a bit North as it becomes Normandy) is really beautiful. Vernon is roughly an hour and a half drive from Paris. I'd spent the morning in Giverny to see the famous Monet house, gardens and lily pond, and his family tomb, on my second visit to that village since I moved to France in '94 from the United States, but Vernon was the choice for lunch not only because it's larger than Giverny and has more options, but because it has a beautiful old church and a great deal of very old buildings, near the River Seine.

I saw an alarmingly high water mark noted on the church -- just about a hundred years ago, it seemed. (It was up high and hard to read.) Floods do happen.

The MIEL D'APICULTEUR means a beekeeper sells honey -- probably from his or her home, as well as in farmers' markets or co-ops there and in the area.

It was an interesting, very green daytrip from Paris, ending with a visit to a troglodyte church in Haute-Isle in Val d'Oise.

I like the way the half-timbered buildings are now at crazy angles. Sometimes walls tilt or bulge alarmingly. There are still thatched roofs in this region and other regions in France.
