STORYLINE
Archaeologists on Tuesday continued exhuming a mass graves across southern Spain where supporters of Francisco Franco allegedly executed renowned poet Federico Garcia Lorca at the outbreak of Spain's Civil War.
Garcia Lorca believed to have been executed at the start of the 1936-39 war in Viznar a town near the ancient city of Granada by supporters of Franco, the army general who unleashed the conflict by rising up against the elected, leftist Republican government.
The site reportedly became one of many execution grounds for perceived opponents of Franco where people were rounded up, brought there and shot, their bodies dumped in a ravine in unmarked graves.
Garcia Lorca, perhaps the war's most famous victim, is widely considered Spain's best 20th century poet and playwright.
But while his executioners may have wanted to erase all memory of him, a lingering dispute over whether to open Garcia Lorca's grave is now a key
focus of a movement to give proper burial to the untold thousands believed to have been murdered by Franco's militias.
Garcia Lorca was shot along with a school teacher named Dioscoro Galindo Gonzalez and two labour union activists - Francisco Galadi and Juan Arcolla - on August 18, 1936 and their bodies are believed to be buried near an olive tree outside the town of Alfacar, close to Viznar.
Cordoba insisted that she was not looking to re-open any closed wounds.

Federico García Lorca (Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, 5 de junio de 1898-camino de Víznar a Alfacar, Granada, 18 de agosto de 1936) fue un poeta, dramaturgo y prosista español, también conocido por su destreza en muchas otras artes. Adscrito a la llamada Generación del 27, fue el poeta de mayor influencia y popularidad de la literatura española del siglo xx. Como dramaturgo se le considera una de las cimas del teatro español del siglo xx, junto con Valle-Inclán y Buero Vallejo. Murió fusilado tras el golpe de Estado que dio origen a la Guerra Civil Española solo un mes después de iniciada esta.

Mi corazón oprimido
siente junto a la alborada
el dolor de sus amores
y el sueño de las distancias

Federico García Lorca (Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, June 5, 1898-Viznar Road to Alfacar, Granada, August 18, 1936) was a Spanish poet, playwright and prose writer, also known for his dexterity in many other arts. Assigned to the call Generation of the 27, was the poet of greater influence and popularity of the Spanish Literature of century XX. As playwright he is considered one of the peaks of twentieth-century Spanish theater, along with Valle-Inclán and Buero Vallejo. He died shot after the coup d'etat that gave rise to the Spanish Civil War only one month after it began.
