The Dordogne, France: Lascaux's Prehistoric Cave Paintings
More info about travel to the Dordogne: From about 18,000 to 10,000 B.C., long before Stonehenge and the pyramids, back when mammoths and saber-toothed cats still roamed the earth, prehistoric people painted deep inside caves in what is today the Dordogne region of France. These cave paintings are huge and sophisticated projects executed by artists and supported by an impressive culture — the Magdalenians.

Places to see in ( Besancon - France ) Eglise Sainte Madeleine de Besancon
Places to see in ( Besancon - France ) Eglise Sainte Madeleine de Besancon
The église Sainte-Madeleine is a neoclassical 18th century hall church in the Battant district of Besançon, France, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. Antoine-Pierre II de Grammont, the archbishop of Besançon, had it built from 1746 to 1766 to plans by the architect Nicolas Nicole. The church Sainte-Madeleine is a church hall in classical style of the xviii th century , the Beating district of Besançon , in the Doubs in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté . It is rebuilt, between 1746 to 1766 , by the bisontin architect Nicolas Nicole , and dedicated to Marie de Magdala .
This church of the Saint Étienne Pastoral Unit , has been listed as a historic monument since 1930, and houses a listed organ.historical monuments , as well as a museum of the past life of the neighborhood of Battant. Note that 34 other French churches are baptized Sainte-Madeleine. The Bisontins call it preferably Church of the Madeleine. This church is built at the exit of the historic city center ( La Boucle ) by the Battant bridge , at the entrance of the quarter Battant (historic district of the old vine growers of the city), and was built, destroyed and restored several times.
The May 26, 1746Archbishop Antoine-Pierre II of Grammont laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction of the building, to replace the old Gothic collegiate church which is threatening to fall into ruins. The works directed by the architect Nicolas Nicole (which will be the masterpiece), lasted until 1766 with 66 m long and 39 m wide, a triple nave , many side chapels , slender arches, statues the xvi th century , rich collections of paintings of Flemish schools and Grandfather of the xvii th centuriesand xviii th centuries , and a large roof glazed tile Burgundy.
This hall-church is built on a Latin cross- shaped plan , with a large classical facade made up of Doric and Ionic order columns , flanked by two towers built without coronations by Nicolas Nicole . The building has a large nave with three spans, separated from the aisles by twin Ionic columns, and a non-salient transept , and a choir closed by a polygonal chevet. The low sides, which have the particularity of being vaulted with edges, open on chapels . The lighting of the nave, though sometimes insufficient, is ensured through stained glass windows in the chapels and rosettes located under the vault. From 1982 to 1989 the building is covered with a new frame covered with Burgundy glazed tile , with herringbone patterns.
A large number of sculptures decorate the interior of the building, including the altar-altarpiece of Saint-Vernier (patron saint of the Franche-Comté winemakers ), work of Claude Joseph Alexandre Bertrand dating from 1784 , the Virgin of the Cordeliers is finding before the Revolution in the Couvent des Cordeliers in Besançon (now lycée Pasteur ) and dating from the xvi th century , the bust of Melchizedek , who happens to be a carved fragment xiii th century one of the statues that once adorned the portal the medieval church destroyed during the xviii th century

Burgundy
Burgundy is like no other wine region I have previously visited. Our one-week stay in Burgundy sadly was not enough; there was much we did not see. We never made it to many of the villages we had hoped to visit. Most of our activity was centered near our rental home in the village of Puligny Montrachet and around Beaune, the main city of the Burgundy wine region.
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the only grapes that are widely grown in Burgundy. There is a decent amount of the grape Aligoté that is grown, but that is secondary to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. There are four distinct AOC’s or appellations in Burgundy and it is important to know about this if you want to learn about Burgundy wines.
Four distinct appellations – lowest to highest
Bourgogne
This is a wine made from grapes grown in the flat lands of Burgundy and they border the area just below the villages. Here there is less sun, less rocky soil, but more water. A Bourgogne can come from vineyards in one village or from several village vineyards. These wines are less in price and quality, but nonetheless there are some very good wines made from these vineyards. We tasted many for about 12 to 15 Euros. Here in California, my wine shop carries Bourgogne wines for about $20.
Village
The wine is named after the village where the grapes are grown, such as Chablis, Pommard or Gevrey Chambertin. The grapes must all be from vineyards located within the particular village. These vineyards are at an elevation slightly higher than the Bourgogne, and with more complex soils.
Premiere Cru
These vineyards are located higher up and the soil is rockier with fewer nutrients. The vines must struggle more and the roots grow deep.
Grand Cru
These are the best vineyards in Burgundy. There are only 33 designated Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. These vineyards produce exceptional quality wines. These wines command very steep prices. The wines of Romanee Conti sell for more than $2000 per bottle.
In Burgundy you will not see the word Chardonnay or Pinot Noir on the label. The label will tell us the village and the vineyard where the grapes were grown. It will also show the producer's name and the appellation. There is said to be more than 4000 producers in the Burgundy region, an area that stretches 88 miles from the north to south. Most of these producers are very small, and they grow and make the wines. Most are family-run operations and the wine is made in their homes with small underground caves.
How to read a Burgundy wine label.
Yield of grapes per appellation
A hectare vineyard is equal to a 10,000 square-meter area and planted with 10,000 vines
In the Bourgogne this produces 8000 to 10,000 bottles of wine.
In the Village appellation one hectare produces 6000 to 8000 bottles of wine.
In the Premiere Cru vineyards one hectare produces a maximum of 6000 bottles.
In the Grand Cru vineyard, one hectacre produces 3500 to 5000 bottles.
The most intriguing feature of Burgundy are the wall-to-wall vineyards surrounding each village. I spent most of my days exploring the vineyards of Puligny Montrachet. Our rental home was here, so it was convenient to drive or cycle through the vineyards of this village. The most amazing thing is the difference from one vineyard plot to another. I saw a small Premier Cru vineyard divided into smaller plots, and different individuals owned these plots. In one plot of perhaps 10 rows of vines, you could see indications of organic farming, i.e. cover crops. In the next plot over, the opposite – use of chemicals. I learned that the organic movement is rapidly increasing each year, but according to one grower only about 25% of the growers practice organic farming.

VCM Wine Funds Update Kuala Lumpur
VCM Vinito Capital Management New Vineyard Fund - NFO New Fund Offer -Vineyard Real estate values vary over time, while the cash flows wineries are stable. The fund’s strategy is therefore to own this vineyard and buy more property to expand and grow wine production. VCM will maintain rigorous cost control and to regularly distribute a large proportion of its income to its members.
This means that stable cash flow will be the dominant part of the total returns, thus creating security, consistent returns and members owning a part of an established and growing organic winery.
The Vineyard Property Income fund is breaking new ground and will be the first alternative investment fund focused on the International vineyard properties and the wine sales production of these vineyard’s.
The fund’s investment strategy is also well suited to the current market, with a high valuation purchasing additional land at deep discounts and creating highly sought after limited availability wines. This type of real estate has strong cash flows and thus stable and good dividend capacity for its owners. It is also a segment that has seen institutional focus in recent years, and the fund is now also giving smaller institutions and other investors an opportunity for exposure to the exciting and profitable wine industry.
The life of the fund is planned to be 5-10 years. The fund has a cost-effective structure and aims to pay dividends from June 2022 corresponding to 8–20 percent per year, with these distributions planned to take place quarterly. The fund’s total return target is 10–15 percent per year. The subscription period runs from June 15 until October 31, 2019
Bordeaux or Burgundy? - Contrary to expectations – with Vinexpo and En Primeur making their presence felt – secondary market activity picked up in May (+16.4%). Burgundy’s share by value reached a record monthly high, accounting for 22.6% of the total trade on Liv-ex.
While Italy also proved popular at 9.9%, Bordeaux dipped to just above 55%. Its most active vintage was the physical 2016, which both the trade and critics deemed more “consistently great” than the newly released 2018. Carruades Lafite 2016 was the most traded Bordeaux wine.
The entire area formed the heart of the Kingdom, and later Duchy, of Burgundy for 1000 years in the middle ages, but was absorbed into the French state from the 15th century onwards. In 2016, the two regions of Burgundy and Franche-Comté voluntarily merged to form the present Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, as part of national territorial reform. They were the only two regions to have already bilaterally expressed a wish to merge before the national law was passed, probably due to their strong historical ties.
