James Madison's Montpelier, located in Orange County, Virginia, was the plantation house of the Madison family, including fourth President of the United States, James Madison, and his wife Dolley. The 2,650-acre property is open seven days a week with the mission of engaging the public with the enduring legacy of Madison's most powerful idea: government by the people. Montpelier was declared a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. It was included in the Madison-Barbour Rural Historic District in 1991. In 1983, the last private owner of Montpelier, Marion duPont Scott, bequeathed the estate to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is also the county seat of Cole County and the principal city of the Jefferson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. 3. Menokin Warsaw Virginia
Menokin, also known as Francis Lightfoot Lee House, was the plantation of Francis Lightfoot Lee near Warsaw, Virginia. Lee was a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence. Menokin was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971.Historic American Buildings Survey documentation, including photos from the 1940s, shows the house standing and reported that it was in poor condition, awaiting a restorer. The National Park Service webpage shows the house in ruins, but reports that woodwork had been removed and placed in storage in the 1960s. Although the house has partly collapsed, the Menokin Foundation has developed a plan to restore the house using glass segments to fill missing portions of the building instead of trying to restore the house to its original condition.

Mid-West Road Trip, Summer 2008

Scott and I took a road trip across the middle of America in 2008. We started in Colorado, drove through Kansas, Missouri and spent a week in Arkansas at the flooded reservoir. Then we went up to Nebraska for a conference and spent the weekend drunk playing golf. Good times. We also rock climbed, hitting classic mid-West craigs such as Sam's Throne, Arkansas and Keysinger and Warsaw Craigs in Missouri.
