Backpacking Thousand Island and Garnet Lake
This was a trip my friend Bryan and I took in August 2016 to Thousand Island Lake and Garnet Lakes. The trip in total mileage was 27 miles. We experienced rain, thunderstorms hail and blue skies. If you never have been to the Sierra, I suggesting planning a trip. It will be an unforgettable experience.
Music in the order it was played:
The XX - Intro
The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues
Gorillaz - 88 State
Minus the Bear - Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse
Working for a Nuclear Free City - Je Suis Le Vent
The Black Keys - These Days

Day 3 July 17th 2018 Thousand Island Lake to Ediza Lake via the JMT PCT
In day 3's video, I pack up camp at Thousand Island Lake and head SoBo on the JMT to Ediza Lake. On the way I pass Emerald Lake, Ruby Lake as well as Garnet Lake.
It was a beautiful July day which got to about 80 degrees. With the log to cross just before Ediza Lake washed out, I show you how/where to boulder scramble to get to the area to camp at Ediza Lake.
I hope you enjoy!
Ansel Adams Wilderness (California) Backpacking - September 2015
My final 'big' backpacking trip of the 2015 season sent me to the Ansel Adams Wilderness in The Sierra Nevada near Mammoth Lakes, California. I had previously planned to hike the iconic Rae Lakes Loop but the massive Rough Fire had different plans for me. With the single road into the Rae Lakes trailhead closed by the Rough Fire I was left scrambling to change my plans only a week before my departure date.
Though it wasn't my first choice, the loop I ended up doing proved to be a worthy alternative - Agnew Meadows past Shadow Lake, up Shadow Creek to Ediza Lake, then on to Garnett Lake, to Thousand Island Lake via the John Muir Trail, and return to the Agnew Meadows Trailhead via the Pacific Crest Trail. Mileage was low but the views were off-the-charts incredible.
I've taken many 'solo' backpacking trips, but always with at least one dog as a companion. This was my first truly solo trip, and combined with the short mile days (which left a ton of down time in the afternoons), the four days alone in the Sierra certainly became a 'growth experience'.
This was also my first opportunity to backpack in the Sierra Nevada, and I was blown away. As my previous videos probably show I truly have a love affair with Colorado and Glacier, but The Sierra Nevada might actually be one notch above those magnificent settings. The 'pointy' peaks of white granite set against a backdrop of the ever-present ridiculously blue skies, the comfortable dry air and lower altitudes, the gently graded and perfectly maintained trails, and (always) the smell of pine, fir, and juniper created the perfect backpacking setting.
Hiking the entire John Muir Trail has long been an entry on my 'bucket list' and this trip drove that desire deeper into my soul. I'm not sure when I can make that dream happen, but having now had a small taste of the JMT I'm driven to someday soon have the full JMT 'meal'.
For those who have watched my other videos this one is done in the same style - a little over an hour in length total, intended to bring the audience along for the ride, and with a 10 minute still picture slide show with music at the end. If you just have a few minutes just skip to the end and enjoy the pictures.

Backpacking to Fern & Ashley Lake: Ansel Adams Wilderness
An amazing overnight backpacking trip in the Ansel Adams Wilderness to some of the Sierras most pristine back-country lakes - Fern & Lake Ashley.
This was an idea I had to book the permit in advance, wake up at 3:00am in Los Angeles and make the drive up to Mammoth Lakes for an overnight backpacking trip, returning the next day. We left the house at approximately 3:30am and were in Mammoth by 8:30am to pick up our permits - we had the entire day really! It's amazing what you can accomplish by waking up a little earlier, having a plan, and executing on that plan.
The trail began at the Devil's Postpile and climbed steeply into the Ansel Adams Wilderness to Fern Lake. After some afternoon swimming, we decided to push North and attempt to make it to Ashley Lake to set up camp. The trail from Fern to the trail-junction of Ashley Lake was relatively easy and scenic, with lots of water flowing in streams. The trail to Ashley lake was a challenge, and ended roughly 1/2 mile from the lake itself. We were advise by earlier passerby's to follow the stream since the stream is formed by Ashley Lakes outlet. We followed the stream the best we could, stumbling through one of the most scenic alpine meadows I have ever laid my eyes on. Arriving to Ashley Lake was a treat - not a soul in sight nor did anyone else join us at the lake during our overnight trip. I can imagine many people do not attempt to visit this lake due to its location and lack of solid trail...hope it stays this way. Fish were plentiful in the waters, however, we did not fish on this trip. Saw several rainbows swimming in the water. The spot we chose to camp has been one of my favorites in the Sierra since we were camped in a the base of the bowl with the high soaring minarets encircling our campsite. Not to mention there was also a pleasant waterfall noise/ambiance in the background all awhile, making the experience just that much better.
The following morning we packed up our gear and headed back down the trail towards the John Muir Trail junction. We essentially followed the trail in a clock-wise pattern and ended where we started. Amazing overnight weekend backpacking trip!!!!!

Kings Canyon Backpacking Adventure.
A few weeks ago, some scouts from Troop 11 and I went backpacking into Kings Canyon for 4 days, summiting Kearsarge Pass (towering around 12,000 feet).
I tried to capture most of the insane highlights from the trip. But you can only really experience this incredible place in person. Enjoy.

Join me as I hike and explore the rugged and stunning Big Sur, CA coastline. To me, Big Sur is one of Califronia's Crown Jewels along with the Eastern Sierra. It's where the mountains meet the ocean and truly is the best of both worlds. I show you the gorgeous turquoise water of the Pacific Ocean and hike through a dense, lush Redwood tree forest. The scenery is breathtaking!
