The Mono–Inyo Craters are a volcanic chain of craters, domes and lava flows in Mono County, Eastern California, United States. The chain stretches 25 miles from the northwest shore of Mono Lake to the south of Mammoth Mountain. The Mono Lake Volcanic Field forms the northernmost part of the chain and consists of two volcanic islands in the lake and one cinder cone volcano on its northwest shore. Most of the Mono Craters, which make up the bulk of the northern part of the Mono–Inyo chain, are phreatic volcanoes that have since been either plugged or over-topped by rhyolite domes and lava flows.

Mammoth Lakes California during the Summer only from the 1970s thru 2011. California supervolcano discovered to be hiding 240 cubic miles of magma
Scientists have discovered 240 cubic miles of semi-molten magma below the Long Valley Caldera, a supervolcano in eastern California near Mammoth Mountain.
The long-dormant supervolcano is currently a 20-mile-long caldera, or a crater that forms after an eruption forces the mouth of a volcano to collapse. According to an August report published in the scientific journal Geology, the semi-molten magma found could lead to possible eruptions.
The supervolcano erupted 760,000 years ago and blanketed land within a 30-mile radius in hot ash. Volcanic material from the eruption was even detected in Nebraska, but the volcano has been dormant for the last 100,000 years.
Fortunately, scientists do not believe that an eruption of that scale will occur anytime in the near future, since just 27 percent of the magma underneath the crater is liquid.

We estimate the reservoir currently contains enough melt to support another super-eruption comparable in size to the caldera-forming eruption [760,000 years ago], the report's conclusion reads. However, this volume and a relatively high melt fraction in no way ensures that the magma is eruptible.
However, the report notes the magma in certain regions of the volcano is near the 50 percent threshold required for eruptions, meaning that normal-sized eruptions are certainly a possibility.
The team of scientists who published the report created a 3D image of the inside of the crater by using seismic data from the past 26 years.
Over the past 40 years, scientists have observed a gradual uplift at the center of the caldera, and the report concedes that there is no conclusive answer to this phenomenon.
Despite 40 years of diverse investigations, the presence of large volumes of melt in Long Valley's magma reservoir remain unresolved, the report states.

Mammoth Lakes Summer of Stewardship 2009: Event #3 at Panorama Dome (TV)
This is the TV commercial that aired to promote the third event of the Mammoth Lakes Summer of Stewardship 2009. A trail-work party co-hosted by High Sierra Equestrian Club, the 395 Fat Tire Council, and the Mammoth Lakes Fire Department will be held on Panorama Dome and Mammoth Rock Trail Saturday, August 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Thanks to a generous grant from the National Forest Foundation (NFF), Friends of the Inyo (FOI) and the Mammoth Lakes Trails and Public Access Foundation (MLTPA) have teamed up with the Inyo National Forest (U.S. Forest Service, or USFS) and Mammoth Trails to bring a series of trail stewardship days to the Mammoth Lakes community. The grant is awarded through the NFFs Ski Conservation Fund, which is funded through optional $1.00 contributions made when purchasing a Mammoth Mountain Ski Area (MMSA) season pass or staying at lodging properties owned by MMSA. Contributions are matched by NFF federal funds and are available to non-profits to conduct on-the-ground stewardship work on their local forests.
The Mammoth Lakes Summer of Stewardship 2009 is a six-event program that runs from June through September and involves local recreation user groups and clubs in caring for some of the areas best-loved amenities. For more information, please visit or call MLTPA at (760) 934-3154.

3 Mammoth Lakes Hiking with 3 Dogs (Spring, 2019)
We visited Mammoth Lakes, CA with our three dogs in June 2019.
1: Twin Lakes (0:15)
What we did was only the beginning part of the Twin Lakes trail. You can go all the way up to the peak of the Mammoth Mountain. If done correctly, this is a 5.7 mile (roundtrip) trail and is described as moderate to strenuous. We have a blind dog, Bernie, so we took an easier route and turned around when he started having difficulties due to mud and snow.
2: Inyo Crater Trail (2:54)
Inyo Crater Trail is a bit hard to find and you have to drive on a dirt road to get to the trailhead but it's worth it! You can find the entrance to the dirt-road via Mammoth Scenic Loop. This 1-mile hike is very dog-friendly and nicely shaded, too. You can easily find the two craters on the trail. I personally like the one with green water in it!
3: Lake Mary (4:54)
The road to Lake Mary was closed for vehicles so we walked up the road to get to Lake Mary. We originally wanted to fish there but it was solid FROZEN! But the view here was gorgeous!

Three of California’s volcanoes are still considered to be a very high threat, along with 15 others nationwide, according to the first update of the federal government’s volcano threat assessment in more than a decade.
Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County, the Lassen Volcanic Center in Shasta County and the Long Valley Caldera that includes the Mammoth Lakes area in Mono County remain in the highest risk category as defined by the U.S. Geological Survey.
