The island is located about one kilometer off the country's northwestern coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches and is 7 hectares in area. The mainland part of the commune is 393 hectares in area so that the total surface of the commune is 400 hectares .As of 2015, the island has a population of 50.The island has held strategic fortifications since ancient times and since the 8th century AD has been the seat of the monastery from which it draws its name. Normandy & D-Day Beaches on a one day trip from Paris using a semi private Viator tour. We visited Omaha and Juno beaches, the American Cemetery in Coleville, Pointe do Hoc, and the artificial harbor at Arromanche. We had a great lunch at a 15th century farmhouse at Ferme de la Ranconniere in Crepon. While it was a long day to see all this from Paris, we had a great tour.
