Sunday June 18, 2017. Today we cross the border into Austria. We are driving the route in Austria that my father use to drive after WWII when he delivered groceries to German prisoners of war. He was stationed in the town of Abtenau. We are camped just outside of Abtenau. The look of the towns may have changed since 1945 when my father was stationed here, but the surrounding mountains are still the same.

Monday June 19, 2017. After leaving our campground in Abtenau, we head up a mountain road which takes us to an elevation of about 4,300 feet above sea level. We stopped for lunch at a ski resort before heading down the other side to our next campsite on Lake Wolfgangsee. For the next two days, we are camping right next to the lake on the edge of the town of St. Wolfgang, Austria.

Hallstatt, Dachstein, Giant Ice Cave - Austria HD Travel Channel
The Dachstein Giant Ice Cave lies in the UNESCO World Heritage region Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut. On the way from Munich to Hallstatt we make a short stop in Abtenau, near the village of Waldhof. The sight of lush meadows and the Tennen Mountains are breathtaking. Our dog stands on a small hill and can not believe its eyes. It feels like being in paradise.
Only a few kilometers from Hallstatt we reach the Krippenstein Mountain by cable car. Our female husky benevolently accepts the greeting of the native huskies .
Then, we dive into the Dachstein – Giant Ice Cave. Here, the skeleton of a cave bear, with a weight of approx 1,000 kg, was found. The ice in the cave is up to 500 years old and in some places it reaches a thickness of 20 m. Light and color games give the cave a nice ambiance. Particularly pleasant is the visit of the approx. 1 º C cool cave on hot summer's days.
On the way back we pass the Gosau lake and cross the Postalm, Europe's largest contiguous alpine area, where we have one last magnificent view of the Dachstein.

Die Dachstein Rieseneishöhle liegt im UNESCO-Welterberegion Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut.
Auf dem Weg von München nach Hallstatt machen wir in Waldhof bei Abtenau einen kurzen Stop. Der Anblick der saftigen Wiesen und des Tennengebirges sind atemberaubend. Unsere Hündin steht auf einem kleinen Hügel und kommt aus dem Staunen nicht heraus. So stellt sie sich wohl das Paradies vor.
Nur wenige Kilometer von Hallstatt entfernt erreichen wir mit der Seilbahn den Krippenstein. Hier nimmt unsere Hündin wohlwollend die Begrüßungen der einheimischen Huskys entgegen.
Danach tauchen wir ab in der Dachstein - Rieseneishöhle. Hier wurde das Skelett eines etwa 1.000 kg schweren Höhlenbären gefunden. Das Eis in der Höhle ist bis zu 500 Jahre alt und erreicht stellenweise eine Dicke von 20 m. Licht- und Farbenspiele geben der Höhle ein schönes Ambiente. Besonders angenehm ist der Besuch der ca. 1ºC kühlen Höhle an heißen Sommertagen.
Auf dem Rückweg passieren wir den Gosausee und überqueren die Postalm, Europas größtes zusammenhängendes Almgebiet, von wo aus wir einen letzten herrlichen Blick auf den Dachstein haben.
