The river Garonne by boat - Bordeaux - Saverio Pepe
Bordeaux which is a fluvial city, was one of the major 18th century ports of Europe. Bordeaux’s city and its vineyards are rediscovering their river Garonne. The boat is a smart way to discover the city, its vineyards and the river’s estuary. Just to board a cruise ship on a pier in the heart of the city, down the river towards the estuary.
You will follow the sublime façade docks of Bordeaux, pass under the new Jacques Chaban-Delmas’s brige and will head straight for the north bridge, where the Garonne becomes Gironde, where the city gives way to nature and vineyards of Blaye and Medoc, comfortably settled in the fertile river silt.
Depending on your mood, choose the stopovers and the final destination: the estuary’s islands, wild and mysterious or designed by the famous engineer Vauban, the Bolt of the Estuary or Vauban Triptych located on the Gironde Estuary, the largest in Europe. Built during the reign of Louis XIV, its role was to protect the city of Bordeaux 50 km upstream from enemy attacks. This defence system consisted of three forts: the Citadel of Blaye, Fort Pâté (located on Île Pâté in the middle of the estuary) and Fort Médoc in Cussac-Fort-Médoc. Unique in France, the Bolt of the Estuary, including the Vauban fortifications, has been a listed World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2008.

This is an immensely attractive and elegant stone house dating from the early nineteenth century, and in excellent condition inside and out.
It has lots of space: the reception rooms are large and airy, with high ceilings and tall windows letting in plenty of light. The kitchen is spacious, well planned and again with good ceiling height. On the first floor there are two large double bedrooms and one smaller one, plus a large bathroom and separate lavatory. There is also an attic room of 25m2 which could be converted to give more living space. Oil-fired central heating keeps the house warm in the cooler months.

The countryside is a patchwork of tranquil woods, low hills and vineyards dotted with historic chteaux: Monbazillac for example, a fine chteau where splendid sweet wines are made, is about 20 km away. Sauvetat-du-Dropt itself is a small village near Eymet, a grey stone-walled bastide town (well, large village, really) which, apart from all the lovely half-timbered houses within its walls, also provides all the shops and services for your everyday needs. All of this lovely architecture sits in a bowl of woods in the valley of the River Dropt. (By the way, the annual river festival, held in August, is not to be missed.)
There is a reasonable sized British population here and even a British town councillor, elected largely, it is said, by French voters, as many of the British residents have not assumed their voting rights. Here is a great success story for Anglo-French relations which the politicians would do well to observe and emulate. Apparently, everyone is happily integrated, the British presence having helped to rejuvenate the village with shops and restaurants remaining open all year and schools flourishing with their increased Anglophone intake.
Air travel links with the UK are excellent: Bergerac (about 25 km away) has budget flights, particularly in summer, from eight UK airports. Road links are reasonable to Bordeaux and thence to the motorway network.
