Mérida es hoy, ante todo, una ciudad administrativa que acoge en su seno los vestigios de un complejo entramado de ciudades que se han superpuesto sucesivamente desde la fundación de la Colonia Augusta Emerita en el año 25 antes de Cristo. Ha habido momentos, especialmente desde los siglos IV al VI, en los que fue Mérida la cabeza desde la que se pensó una nueva Hispania, sustancialmente cristiana pero que no renunciaba a su glorioso pasado pagano. La difícil síntesis encontró acomodo bajo la monarquía visigoda, concretamente bajo el patronazgo del arzobispado emeritense, el más importante de la antigüedad tardía y los comienzos de la Edad Media en la Península, ya que dependían de él doce obispados. Después, el nuevo emirato, para sobrevivir, hubo de apoyarse en grandes ciudades ya existentes, como Córdoba o la propia Mérida. Luego, el califato, redujo la influencia de la ciudad en favor de otra nueva, creada por los propios emeritenses: Batalhús, la actual Badajoz.
Merida was founded in 25 BC, with the name of Emerita Augusta by order of Emperor Augustus, to protect a pass and a bridge over the Guadiana river. The city became the capital of Lusitania province, and one of the most important cities in the Roman empire. Mérida preserves more important ancient Roman monuments than any other city in Spain, including a triumphal arch of the age of Trajan.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, during the Visigothic period, the city maintained much of its splendor, especially under the 6th-century domination of the bishops, when it was the capital of Hispania. In 713 it was conquered by the Muslim army under Musa bin Nusair, and became the capital of the cora of Mérida; the Arabs re-used most of the old Roman buildings and expanded some, such as the Alcazaba.
The city returned to Christian rule in 1230, when it was conquered by Alfonso IX of León, and subsequently became the seat of the priory of San Marcos de León of the Order of Santiago.

El episodio de hoy transcurre en la sierra norte de Cáceres (Extremadura), concretamente en Las Hurdes y Sierra de Gata.

Lo primero que vamos a conocer son sus pueblos, todos ellos llenos del encanto del mundo rural y en los cuales vamos a encontrar una amplísima oferta de alojamientos rurales. Voy a enseñaros dos de los pueblos que más me han gustado. Por un lado tenemos El Gasco, un pequeño municipio que aún preserva la arquitectura rural de las Hurdes con casas bajas hechas a base de piedras lisas y planas llamadas lajas. El segundo municipio que quiero presentaros es Robledillo de la Gata, un idílico pueblo de 80 habitantes situado en el corazón de Sierra que dispone de 150 plazas de alojamiento rural.
Las Hurdes y Sierra de Gata son dos parajes naturales de gran belleza. En las Hurdes encontramos un terreno agreste convertido en un gran tapiz cromático gracias a los colores que aportan los brezos y las jaras. Y del terreno escarpado de las Hurdes nos vamos a frondosidad de Sierra de Gata, donde se puede pasear por algunos de los mejores bosques de encinas y alcornoques de España. Pero lo que más me llamó la atención de esta comarca fue la continua presencia del agua. Sierra de gata y Las Hurdes dispone de innumerables acuíferos y saltos de agua como el Chorro de la Meancera con 100 metros de caída o el impresionante Meandro del Melero.
También nos vamos a adentrar en el mundo de la apicultura, porque esta comarca del norte de Extremadura es líder en la producción de miel y aprovechando que estamos en el municipio de Las Mestas, nos vamos a meter en una colmena.
Seguramente ya estés planificando tu viaje por Sierra de Gata y Las Hurdes, pero si aún tienes dudas, he dejado para el final lo más espectacular de esta comarca, porque no quedan muchos lugares donde poder avistar la belleza de los buitres leonados en un paraje como la sierra norte de Extremadura.
Today we are in Sierra de Gata and Las Hurdes in the mountains north of Cáceres (Extremadura).
The first thing we will see are the region's villages, all of them full of the charm of the rural world and in which we will find a wide range of lodgings. I'll show you two of the villages that I liked the most. On one hand we have El Gasco, a small town that still preserves the Las Hurdes rural architecture, with low houses made from smooth, flat stones called lajas. The second village I want to show you is Robledillo de Gata, an idyllic village of 80 inhabitants located in the heart of Sierra that has 150 rural accommodation spaces.
Hurdes and Sierra de Gata are two natural places of great beauty. In Las Hurdes we will find a wild area that resembles a large, colorful tapestry thanks to the heather and rockrose. From the rugged terrain of Las Hurdes we will go to the luxury of Sierra de Gata, where you can stroll through some of the best forests of corn oaks and holm oaks in Spain. But what caught my attention in this region was the continued presence of water. Sierra de Gata and Las Hurdes have wells and countless waterfalls, like the Chorro de la Meancera with a 100 meter drop and the impressive Meandro de El Melero.
We will also delve into the world of beekeeping, because this region of northern Extremadura is a leading producer of honey. Taking advantage of being in the town of Las Mestas, we will get into a beehive.
Surely you're already planning your trip Sierra de Gata and Las Hurdes, but if you still have doubts, I've saved the most spectacular part of this region for last, because there are not many places where you can glimpse the beauty of vultures in a place.

Epic Mexican Feast in Puerto Vallarta
If you're one of the approximately 100% of humans who love Mexican food, then learning how to make it yourself is the next step. In this Puerto Vallarta travel vlog, we do a Mexican cooking class to find out how our favourite dishes come together. We first walk to a market to buy fresh food supplied by local farmers and pick up vegetables, fruit, chicken, fish, and cheese. We meet a man selling grasshoppers, which are a popular snack, so we decided to give them a try. Then we stop by a tortilla factory where we try a tortilla so fresh it's almost too hot to hold. Chef Julio Cesar of Gaby's Restaurant guides us all the way. After shopping, we cook on the veranda with a view of the ocean and palm trees. It's really fun to see fresh ingredients go from the market to the table and all the steps in between. If you already love cooking, like me, then a class like this is a no brainer. But, even if you don't typically love being in the kitchen, a class like this is a great opportunity to connect with Mexican culture in a delicious way.

В этой рыбацкой деревушке живет (во всяком случае - жила) семья черепах. Двух их них мы с другом видели. Он даже смог их заснять. Отрывки я с его разрешения вставил в этот ролик.
Мы вышли поздно, поэтому я не стал заходить в воду в поисках черепах, а решил приехать туда на машине утром.
