ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on YouTube, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're weekend warriors just like you!
We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

Great Sand Dunes National Park || Colorado || FullTime RVers
Great Sand Dunes National Park has to be one of most deceptive places we have adventured at thus far. Not because there are evil deceptive people there, but those dunes are MUCH larger than they look in any pictures we have seen. Compare them to the size of the surrounding mountains and of course they are small, but they don't call them the Great Sand Dunes for nothing. You will have to see for yourself to truly see their mightiness!
Not only are the Great Sand Dunes the largest Sand Dunes in the United States, but they are also an awesome place to go sledding! Why wait for winter when you can sled in the summer too! Take a trip to the Great Sand Dunes and explore an incredibly unique landscape!

Beautiful Place To See- Great Sand Dunes National Park (San Luis Valley, USA)
Beautiful Place To See- Sand Dunes National Park (San Luis Valley, USA)
The tallest dunes in North America are the centerpiece in a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. Experience this diversity through hiking, sand sledding, splashing in Medano Creek, wildlife watching, and more.
History
Great Sand Dunes National Monument was one of the many United States national parks and monuments created during the Great Depression (1932). In its original form it covered only the dunes themselves. However, it has expanded significantly since its roots, due in large part to concern among residents of nearby communities about the need to protect the watershed containing the dunes. Recent actions in 2000 and 2004 led first to the creation of a preserve adjoining the monument, and then to the designation of the combined monument/preserve as a full-fledged national park.
Landscape
The park includes North America's tallest dunes, which rise over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The wind-shaped dunes glow beneath the rugged backdrop of the mountains. This geologic wonderland contains over 30 square miles of massive dunes, and also includes alpine lakes and tundra, six peaks over 13,000' in elevation, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands, and wetlands--all habitat for diverse wildlife and plant species.
Climate
In the summer, daytime air temperatures rarely reach 90 °F, with average temperatures in the 70s-80s °F. Summer nights are surprisingly cool thanks to the elevation of 8200' above sea level, with lows sometimes dropping into the 40s. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July and August with associated winds and lightning. Be prepared to leave the dunes promptly if thunderstorms threaten: lightning strikes are common and may be fatal.
Fall is generally mild, with Indian summer days. Highs average in the 60s - 70s °F, with chilly nights in the 20s - 30s °F. Be prepared, though, for the occasional cold fall storm, bringing icy rain or even snow.
Cold temperatures are the norm in winter, even though sunshine is generally abundant. The lowest temperature recorded at Great Sand Dunes was -25 deg;F in 1963. Average highs are in the 20s-40s °F, with lows averaging -5 to 15 deg;F. Snow may fall and high winds may occasionally occur, so bring warm, layered clothing and sturdy footwear.
Spring can bring high winds; March, April, and May winds are unstable and can be unusually strong. Temperatures can vary widely: highs may reach into the 60s °F, or only into the 30s °F with an even colder wind-chill. Lows can also vary from 0 deg;F to the 30s °F. March and April are the snowiest months of the year, but some days in spring can also be swimsuit weather.
The average annual precipitation is 11 inches including an average snowfall of 37 inches. Overall, precipitation increases in all directions as you leave the heart of the San Luis Valley. Yearly there are only 30-40 days when clouds obstruct the sun the majority of the day. The valley is known as the Land of Cool Sunshine and lives up to that name throughout most of the year.

Exploring Great Sand Dunes National Park
As Heath and I continue toward our goal of visiting all 59 national parks, we made a slight detour to Great Sand Dunes National Park with Heath's family during our vacation last month.
I'll be the first to say that hiking with friends and family creates so many more fun moments and memories than hiking with just Heath. For one, there's no way I would've let him run and leap off the top of the dunes if it were just us, but now I have a hilarious slo-mo video to watch and giggle at for days to come. (Don't worry, Heath got up just fine!)
We only had a few hours to explore Great Sand Dunes, so we asked the ranger for the highlights: hiking the dunes and hiking Zapata Falls.
We explore both in this video for a day of epic adventures! Read the full blog post on our adventure here: heathandalyssa.com/great-sand-dunes
Subscribe to our channel for more videos of our adventures as we travel full-time in our Winnebago! :)

Ep. 60: Twin Lakes & Aspen | Colorado RV camping travel
Join us at the Top of the Rockies! We camp in a free boondocking site with a commanding view of Twin Lakes, Colorado, in the shadow of 14,439-foot Mount Elbert, the second highest summit in the continental U.S. We cross Independence Pass, at 12,095 feet the highest paved crossing of the Continental Divide, en route to the ritzy resort town of Aspen. We also examine the mining history of nearby Leadville.
Filmed August 13-14, 2018.
