The Wheeler Geologic Area is a highly eroded outcropping of layers of volcanic ash, in the La Garita Mountains of Mineral County, in southern Colorado in the western United States about 10 miles east north-east of Creede. The ash is the result of eruptions from the La Garita Caldera approximately 25 millions years ago. The area was designated a National Monument from 1908 until 1950 and was Colorado's first National Monument. It is now part of the La Garita Wilderness and administered by the Rio Grande National Forest. Lying just below the crest of the range at an elevation of 11,960 feet , it can be reached by a 8.4-mile hike on the East Bellows Trail , or by a difficult 14 mile four-wheel drive road. Ridgway, coined Gateway to the San Juans, is a Home Rule Municipality in Ouray County, in the southwestern portion of the U.S. State of Colorado. The town is a former railroad stop on the Uncompaghre River in the northern San Juan Mountains. Being life long residents of Colorado, it's mystery how we missed the Creede area. But we've remedied that now. We will certainly be returning.

Combination of video I shot in September 2016 coming into and through Creede, Colorado and including a clip from a home movie shot in September of 1961 showing the same thing. The old home movie was what inspired me to shoot a similar clip 55 years later. Posting just for fun and for people that like before and after type things.
