France: Art & Sculpture of Matisse & Rodin
The methods used by Henri Matisse to create his drawings, paintings and little-known sculptures are revealed in this visit to the town of Le Cateau-Cambrésis in Nord-Pas de Calais, France. where the great artist was born. The works are displayed in the Palais Fénelon once the castle of the Bishops of Cambrai and now the Musée Matisse. Our search for another great sculptor takes us on to the port of Calais. In 1347 Queen Philippa interceded on behalf of the richest men who had offered their lives to save the townsfolk of Calais following a year-long siege by her husband King Edward lll of England. The story of the Burghers of Calais is commemorated by the great French sculptor, Auguste Rodin, with a work of art that stands outside the old City Hall. Tourisme : bilan à Paris et en Essonne
2 septembre 1997
Images d'archive INA

Gîte Le Jardin (Dauphin, France)
Because we rented this house the second week of September, it was only 300 euros. It sleeps six. Instead of paying 50 euros for the owners to clean it once we left, we cleaned it ourselves. It was way too big for us and we didn't use one of the bedrooms and the upstairs bathroom at all. It has six terraced gardens and was built over a period of three years around vestiges of an ancient tower, part of the village defense system in Dauphin, France.
Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is the département for Dauphin, and Provence is a general term for a lot of Southeastern France, along and not far from the Mediterranean. Lubéron is also sometimes another name for this region and refers to at least one mountain range.
There is a floating spiral staircase central to this house and one side of it is pretty much glass. The roofs are gardens of succulent plants and the other gardens adjacent to the house and accessible from its three-plus levels have tables and chairs, olive trees, a huge grape arbor, deck chairs you can move out for sunbathing, et cetera. This is not on any street or road and access was not easy. This house would not much be suited to those with serious mobility issues.
Dauphin has only a couple of restaurants, one bar (I think, I didn't go) and the bakery is about to close, as the couple who ran it for 43 years are retiring. The village of Mane is only about 5 km away, however, and the ancient city of Forcalquier is only about 10 km away, and that has the largest market in the entire region (every Monday) and small daily markets featuring organic and other locally produced, seasonal products -- all services and activities you might need can likely be found there. You do need an automobile here (we rented one in Avignon) but I noticed men and women hitchhiking as a daily matter of course.
Gîte Le Jardin is wonderfully tranquil. The only noise we heard were church bells and sometimes, a rooster crowed and cicadas sang. This part of France has almost no light pollution, so is a stargazer's delight and there is a huge observatory nearby in Saint-Christophe which welcomes the public for events, day and night.
