Quail Island in Christchurch: New Zealand’s WEIRDEST Island – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year
Day 225: Today we are back in Christchurch! This time, we are taking a ferry over to Quail Island – a New Zealand island with a usual and weird past. Join us as we go discover Christchurch’s Quail Island.

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video –
Today we are back in the city of Christchurch. We are heading over to Lyttleton to take the Black Cat Cruises Ferry to the fascinating Quail Island. This island not only seems cursed with the amount of stories of people dying soon after their visit, but this island used to be a quarantine station and leprosy colony.
So here we are, if you ever wondered where a New Zealand leprosy colony would be, it’s Quail Island. Aside from interesting history, Quail Island in Christchurch is home to a network of walks through forests and along beaches. There are plenty of New Zealand birds to see and the whole Quail Island can be explored within a day.
If you are looking for an island to visit in New Zealand, definitely consider Quail Island in the Lyttelton Harbour. It’s definitely one of the alternative things to do in Christchurch or things to do in Lyttelton.
So what do you think of this unusual island in New Zealand? Would you add Quail Island to your Christchurch travel itinerary? LUK in the comments

Christchurch - January 2019 [4K]
It’s now been eight years since the earthquake. In 2018, major projects completed include the Central City Promenade, City Library, The Terrace, EntX and the restoration of the Lyttelton Time Ball. There was some key movement on the ‘anchor’ projects, with work starting on the Convention Centre, the Town Hall and ‘inner-city living’ apartments, plus key decisions on the Cathedral and Stadium. Tourists levels continue to rise, and with the trial of electric e-scooters, the central city is literally buzzing with people! This is my sixth annual film showing the annual recovery of Christchurch since 2014. My main purpose is to show what's new since last year, but also blend this in with what's great about Christchurch.

Exploring New Zealand #6: Christchurch Cathedral Square and Canterbury Museum
When I was preparing this trip to New Zealand, some people told me Christchurch wasn't that good. How wrong they were. Christchurch is a beautifully planned city plenty of interesting things to keep you busy for a couple of days. We took many photos at the Cathedral Square, climbed the Christchurch Cathedral tower, visited the fascinating Canterbury Museum and spent an afternoon at the Orana Wildlife Park.
______
Cathedral Square, locally known simply as the 'Square', is the geographical centre and heart of Christchurch, New Zealand, where the city's Anglican cathedral, ChristChurch is located. The square was originally intended to be called Ridley Square, after the Protestant martyr Nicholas Ridley, but in Edward Jollie's 1850 plan of central Christchurch it is clearly marked Cathedral Square. Ridley's co-martyrs and colleague bishops, Cranmer and Latimer have Squares named after them, not far distant from Cathedral Square.
- Update 5 September 2010: Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand
Christchurch's landmark heritage buildings have made it through yesterday's damaging 7.1 magnitude earthquake, and hefty aftershocks, relatively unscathed. Five hundred buildings have been affected across Christchurch, including 90 in the central city where there are many heritage and character buildings. Christchurch landmarks to have fared well the earthquake include the Provincial Chambers, the Christchurch Cathedral, the Arts Centre, Christ's College and the Public Trust building and other buildings on Oxford Terrace. One building extensively damaged is the Repertory Theatre in Kilmore St, just months ahead of a major restoration project, a city council spokeswoman said. Staff from Christchurch City Council and the Historic Places Trust have begun inspecting central city buildings alongside the council's building evaluation team, and will also assess buildings elsewhere in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. A very small number of buildings have suffered extensive damage due to the earthquake, and further assessment will determine whether they can be restored. Many others have suffered minor to moderate damage, and will be fixed in coming weeks. Buildings already strengthened by property owners had generally fared well. We encourage building owners to seek appropriate advice from structural engineers and architects and take steps in the interim to reduce damage and cost by keeping them weather-tight, Urban Design and Heritage team leader Ceciel DelaRue said.
At least it was a good sunrise! // Christchurch, NZ
Hiking in the dark for sunrise and the lunar eclipse blood moon (selenelion) up Mount Herbert in Christchurch, New Zealand. Plus a ferry ride from Diamond Harbour to Lyttelton for the market.

Amazing Drone Views of Christchurch, New Zealand
I love Christchurch and ever since I have had a drone (DJI Phantom) I have taken it with me to various places around Christchurch and video them. Christchurch Garden City is an amazing place to live and travel to and see all the seasons and hopefully you can see it from this video. Christchurch was also hit by a few devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 so the city is changing everyday. #eqnz eqnz
All videos in this video either were taken before the drone rules came out in New Zealand last year or I had the permission from the land owners, CAA, CCC, aerodrome nearby or anyone else needed.

Amazing Aerial Views over Christchurch, New Zealand
Amazing Aerial Views over Christchurch, Scenic Flight of Christchurch trip with Garden City Helicopters.
I had the opportunity to take the family on a scenic flight over Christchurch, Lyttelton and Sumner and it was amazing to see Christchurch from above and I actually mean above. I usually use a drone to film these kinds of scences but it was a different feeling actually be up there. My family loved it too. The girls couldn't stop talking about it. NZmustsee
Christchurch is changing everyday after the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes and while it is sad to see it is great to see change.
