Worldschool Tour: Monticello near Charlottesville, Virginia
The hurricane Florence couldn't stop our worldschooling history tour. We were afraid the rain would make our visit to Monticello outside Charlottesville, Virginia into a miserable slog but it held off long enough for us to take a tour of the house and part of the gardens. As promised, here's a link with more photos and info on visiting Monticello:
Unfortunately, there was a prohibition on filming in the house and a light rain kept my camera in my jacket for most of our outside tour so this is the least informative video of the playlist.
What I really wish I'd captured was how interested Anders was on the design of the gardens. He really got into it and was thinking of all the things he would add and how he would design his own garden. This is exactly what I love about worldschooling. Seeing the boys inspired by their experiences to think and imagine and discover.
We also have cousins in the area and it was great to visit with them and catch up with family that I haven't seen in years and who had never met the boys. A great reason to go back.
Next stop will be Jamestown!

LOUISIANA PLANTATIONS TOUR and VLOG
In this vlog, we venture one hour from the French Quarter to visit the Louisiana plantations, located along the Mississippi River. The first stop is the Whitney Plantation where we hear the harrowing story from the slaves perspective. Then we visit Oak Alley Plantation and hear the story from the plantation owner's perspective.
This is a story of wealth, grandeur, and tragedy that lead up to the Civil War in the US. The Whitney Plantation gives a voice to the slaves who worked to build the backbone of the US industry. Here, over 100 slaves worked in the production of sugar. We learn about their daily lives, view the slaves quarters, the salve jail, and learn about the horrors of the slave trade.
At the Oak Alley Plantation, we hear about the Creole family that owned the plantation and what their life was like during the Antebellum era.
It is a story we will never forget.
