Places to see in ( Corsica - France ) Algajola
Algajola is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. The inhabitants of the commune are known as Algajolais or Algajolaises. Algajola is a commune on the Balagne coast between Calvi, 12 km to the west, and Ile Rousse, 10 km to the East. It is one of 19 communes in the Canton of Belgodère and not to those of Calvi or Ile Rousse as its location would suggest. It is part of the arrondissement of Calvi.
The village is served by the CFC railway line. During the summer season, it is the Trinighellu stop on the beaches service from Calvi to L'Ile Rousse. There is a single road accessing the commune: the National Route N197. A parallel road accessing Aregno beach to the east starts from the roundabout which was opened in 2010 to the west allows access to the village by the sea. At the roundabout a road also leads to the fishing port/marina of San Damiano.
Algajola has become a popular small resort. Located in Balagne, one of the two tourist poles of Corsica, with a hinterland rich in villages and historic buildings and monuments, it is an idyllic experience for all lovers of the sea, sunsets, and good food.
Alot to see in Algajola such as :
The Algajola Chateau-fortLogo monument historique - rouge sans texte.svg or U Castellu was built at the beginning of the 16th century just before 1531 on the ruins of the Lomellini Tower (Genoese nobility) to be the residence of the Governor of Balagne for Genoa until 1764. It is now privately owned. The chateau has been classified as a historical monument since 15 July 1965.
The small Port of San Damiano. It is located 7 km west of L'Île-Rousse and 15 km from Calvi. It is sheltered by the Punta San Damiano from frequent strong winds from north to west.
The Citadel. Algajola was an advanced Genovese position for a long time before Calvi. Today the small fortress is well maintained and has as attractive silhouette with its protruding watchtower.
The Parish Church of Saint-George (15th century), burned by the Saracens, then remodeled in 1618. The building integrated into the defence system of the village and has an original square bell tower.
The Chapel of Saint-Michel was built near the sea in the 12th century to the east of the village. This small maritime chapel has recently been restored from the incessant attacks of time and the sea.

Places to see in ( Corsica - France ) Ile Rousse
L'Île-Rousse is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. It was founded in 1758 by Pasquale Paoli to create a port that would not be in the hands of the Genoese like Calvi. As Italian was until 1848 the administrative language of Corsica, the town was originally named Isola Rossa (Red Island) from the ochre colour of a rocky islet that served as a natural harbour. Along with Saint-Florent, it is one of only two communes in the département to have a French name — all the others have kept their Italian names despite the repeated demands of Corsican nationalists.
Inhabited since very ancient times (between 5000-3000 BC), l'Île-Rousse was in 1000 BC a small, prosperous town dependent on Tyre in Phoenicia, called Agilla. Destroyed by the Phoenician fleet of Calaris (Galeria), Agilla came under Roman rule as Rubico Rocega (red rock) until the 4th century AD. Being so close to the sea, it was threatened by pirates and other potential enemies, and was not inhabited for several centuries except for fishermen and peasants who lived on the products of the sea and earth around the villages of Santa Reparata and Monticello.
In the 17th century, merchants from Santa-Reparata-di-Balagna established shops to trade by sea with the coastal villages of the Balagne, Nebbio, and the west of the Cap Corse. About 1759, Pasquale Paoli, who often came to Balagne, decided to equip Corsica with a port in the north west of the island to try to cut the sea traffic between Genoa and Calvi. His plans prepared, he persuaded the Balagne government, sitting in Algajola, to authorise him to create a fort protecting the port (the Scalu) on 10 December 1765. L’Île-Rousse was born from this decision.
Built on a bay bounded to the north west by the rocky islets of red porphyry which give it its name, and to the south by an immaculate white sand beach, l’Île-Rousse is presented to the tourist in all its beauty, extending westwards from the sea to the hill of the Sémaphore and the col de Fogata.
The old town of Pascal Paoli, le Père de la Patrie (the Father of the Fatherland), is made up of paved streets, almost rectilinear and oriented north-south. From the quays of the commercial port installed on 3 of the 6 small islands, the fishing port and the bridges which link the harbour complex to the coast and the market with its twenty one columns, the fortifications and the houses of the old city grew over the years, from 1765 into the first half of the 19th century.
Certain houses with their interior Florentine staircases are remarkable. The first church built in 1740 and destroyed in 1936 gave its name to the rue Notre-Dame. The church dedicated to Notre Dame de Miséricorde is next to an old Franciscan convent, while the parish church of l’Île-Rousse, the Immaculée Conception de Marie, is on the west of the main square, with its enormous date palms (planted 1890) in the shade of which it is good to play a game of pétanque.
The new town blends harmoniously with the old at the place Paoli, shaded by hundred year old plane trees, where it is good to take the summer air. The old town offers visitors the chance to stroll on the old paving stones, partly restored, along streets with historic names: Pasquale Paoli, Napoleon, les frères Arena (Arena brothers), Louis Philippe, Agilla..
Built by Pascal Paoli, equipped by its municipal officials, after 1815 with a blazon decorated with the royal fleur-de-lis of France and run for than a half-century by elected Bonapartist officials, l’Île-Rousse is a town with a share in the history of Corsica. Its contradictions make it an attractive and unexpected place for the tourists who come each year to sit down under the plane trees of its beautiful central square.

Frankrijk, Corsica To Sant'Antonino.
Sant'Antonino -- Exploring La Balagne
Sant'Antonino is an ancient circular village on the northern coast of Corsica, perched on a rocky hilltop that overlooks the ocean and the Balagne region. At one time the Balagne was considered the Garden of Corsica for its olive trees, fruit orchards and fertile soil.
Cars and buses can drive up to the village and there are plenty of parking spots, under the shade of trees, next to the main church. The houses in this village seem to be fused to the rock. On every corner there's a panoramic view of the ocean......or the surrounding valleys below. This is one village that is completely off limits to cars. Sant'Antonino has a chapel and a church and there are a few artisanal shops selling souvenirs, crafts and gastronomic specialties. After Bonifacio, this is one of my favorite places in Corsica where I can wander through a maze of circular passages and archways and admire the awesome views and the local architecture. There are two restaurants: La Taverne Corse located at the entrance and La Belle Vue on the opposite site of the village. Both offer traditional Corsican dishes at a reasonable price (charcuterie, brocciu omelets, cheeses and other local specialties). Depending on the time of year or the time of day you may find some businesses are closed so it is best to always come prepared with a picnic. It is worth stopping at La Maison du Citron (located near the entrance) for a glass of freshly squeezed citron juice or a muscat.
Sant'Antonino is perfect for a day trip, just 10km away from Algajola and 15km from Île Rousse. On a future post we will visit Algajola, a picturesque sea side village located about 15 minutes from Calvi by car.
Places to see in ( Corsica - France ) Zonza
Places to see in ( Corsica - France ) Zonza
Zonza is a commune in the Corse-du-Sud department of France on the island of Corsica. Zonza is located in the mountain chain of Barocagio-Marghese which extends to the south of the Incudine massif. This mountainous area extends 20 km from west to east from the village of Zonza to the Tyrrhenian Sea and 12 km from north to south from the Bavella pass to Mount Rossu. The village is situated in the Rizzansee river valley on the mountainside opposite Quenza on the D268 road which connects Bavella to Levie.
To the east, the hamlet of Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio is the centre of a coastal area which is irrigated by the Cavu river. No communication road exists between these two parts of the commune. To travel from Zonza Village to St. Lucia, a distance of 17 km as the crow flies, the Zonza massif must be circled to the south and Ospedale forest passed through. This route is about 50 km and takes over an hour.
On 29 November 1993, waters of the coastal Cavu river rose by ten times in the space of half an hour causing rocks, trees, telephone poles to slide down the hill and flooding all the houses on its banks. Taglio Rosso in Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio became isolated from the rest of the area. This flood occurred at the same time as that of the Solenzara river which has its mouth at the town of the same name. Mudslides occurred in almost all of the Sartène arrondissement, from Propriano to Porto-Vecchio.
Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio (Corsican: Santa-Lucia-di-Portivechju) is located on Route nationale 198 on the east coast, between Sari-Solenzara and Porto-Vecchio. The D168A, to the east, leads to the coast and to the village of Pinarello, 3 km away. To the west, the D168 follows the Cavo river and leads to Conca, a village 5 km away.
An annex to the town hall is on the D168a towards Pinarello. The village has shops including a supermarket, a doctor's surgery, a pharmacy, a petrol station and a bookshop. The village also offers a variety of holiday accommodation, including hotels, campsites and other locations.
3 km to the east, the village of Pinarello (Corsican: golfe de Pinarellu), a small fishing port and marina, boasts a magnificent white sand beach that runs along a 10ha pine forest. A road which subsequently becomes a path leads along the Cavo river to the west.

Places to see in ( Corsica - France ) Calvi
Places to see in ( Corsica - France ) Calvi
Calvi is a town on the northwest coast of Corsica. It's known for its beaches and crescent-shaped bay. A medieval citadel overlooks the marina from the bay's western end, and is home to Baroque St-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral and cobbled streets. Restaurants line the harbor on the Quai Landry esplanade. Perched on a high hill a short distance inland, the chapel of Notre-Dame de la Serra has panoramic views of the area.
The port town of Calvi, in the Balagne region of north-west Corsica, boasts the intrigue of traditional Corsican culture while effortlessly maintaining the comforts of a modern resort. You will find picturesque views of the coast and there are many enjoyable places to spend time both in Calvi itself and the surrounding region.
Calvi was not our favourite destination on Corsica; beaches are better at Porto Vecchio, citadels at Bonifacio and scenery at Porto, however with its combination of beaches, resort and historical centre it is a very accessible resort and can be visited without hiring a car.
If you travel to Calvi by ferry you will immediately see the full effect of the attractive port, the towering Citadel, the rugged mountains, and the forest of pines. If you do not arrive by ferry, you can still see great views of the area from the water by taking one of the many boat trips or pleasure cruises available in the marina. Start your visit in the Port de Plaisance, which is a friendly marina and an enjoyable place to view the many luxury boats and bright fishing boats as they arrive and depart. Calvi is also one of the stops made by the large cruise ships to Corsica and these can often be seen in the harbour.
For many visitors it is Calvi’s beach that is the big attraction and centre of a visit. The beach is a long, narrow strip of white sand and serene, shallow water that stretches nearly 6 km (4 mi) along the length of the bay. It is not the most attractive beach on Corsica by a long stretch but it is functional and easily accessible. The beach also has lifeguards and very good facilities, such as picnic areas and snack bars. Popular activities include windsurfing, waterskiing, jet skiing and paragliding.
For those who prefer a quieter place to soak in the sun, a less populated and wider strip of beach can be found at plage de l’Alga, near Revellata point. A little further round the coast near Lumio the beaches of Arinella and Algaio are the best in this area. The mixture of sandy beach and large flat rocks is an attractive combination and you can see Calvi on the other side of the bay.
The Genoese Citadel is the main part of the town, and its most important historical monument. It was a military outpost in the 15th century that helped guard the city against international attacks. The citadel sits high above Calvi port from where it towers over the sea. From up here you get some great views of the coast and harbour. Within the citadel old town there are many tunnels and long winding stairways as well as plenty of narrow walkways tucked between quaint old houses.
Places of interest in the Citadel include the restored palace of the Genovese governor, and the remains of a house that is rumoured to be the place where Christopher Columbus was born*. The original house was destroyed by Nelson’s troops in 1794 and today a statue stands on the site, commemorating the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ birthday. In the Citadel is the Cathédrale St-Jean-Baptiste, which was erected to hold an allegedly supernatural crucifix called Christ des Miracles. Look out also for the pretty pink baroque church of Sainte-Marie.
Wandering around the cobblestone streets and shops in the Citadel is a lovely way to spend an afternoon or quiet evening. Additionally, a jazz festival is held in this area every June. The Museum of Corsican Ethnography is also located in the Citadel and holds many items in connection with the history and culture of this beautiful island. This is a recommended tourist destination, along with the military museum.
