Places to see in ( Corsica - France ) Ile Rousse
L'Île-Rousse is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. It was founded in 1758 by Pasquale Paoli to create a port that would not be in the hands of the Genoese like Calvi. As Italian was until 1848 the administrative language of Corsica, the town was originally named Isola Rossa (Red Island) from the ochre colour of a rocky islet that served as a natural harbour. Along with Saint-Florent, it is one of only two communes in the département to have a French name — all the others have kept their Italian names despite the repeated demands of Corsican nationalists.
Inhabited since very ancient times (between 5000-3000 BC), l'Île-Rousse was in 1000 BC a small, prosperous town dependent on Tyre in Phoenicia, called Agilla. Destroyed by the Phoenician fleet of Calaris (Galeria), Agilla came under Roman rule as Rubico Rocega (red rock) until the 4th century AD. Being so close to the sea, it was threatened by pirates and other potential enemies, and was not inhabited for several centuries except for fishermen and peasants who lived on the products of the sea and earth around the villages of Santa Reparata and Monticello.
In the 17th century, merchants from Santa-Reparata-di-Balagna established shops to trade by sea with the coastal villages of the Balagne, Nebbio, and the west of the Cap Corse. About 1759, Pasquale Paoli, who often came to Balagne, decided to equip Corsica with a port in the north west of the island to try to cut the sea traffic between Genoa and Calvi. His plans prepared, he persuaded the Balagne government, sitting in Algajola, to authorise him to create a fort protecting the port (the Scalu) on 10 December 1765. L’Île-Rousse was born from this decision.
Built on a bay bounded to the north west by the rocky islets of red porphyry which give it its name, and to the south by an immaculate white sand beach, l’Île-Rousse is presented to the tourist in all its beauty, extending westwards from the sea to the hill of the Sémaphore and the col de Fogata.
The old town of Pascal Paoli, le Père de la Patrie (the Father of the Fatherland), is made up of paved streets, almost rectilinear and oriented north-south. From the quays of the commercial port installed on 3 of the 6 small islands, the fishing port and the bridges which link the harbour complex to the coast and the market with its twenty one columns, the fortifications and the houses of the old city grew over the years, from 1765 into the first half of the 19th century.
Certain houses with their interior Florentine staircases are remarkable. The first church built in 1740 and destroyed in 1936 gave its name to the rue Notre-Dame. The church dedicated to Notre Dame de Miséricorde is next to an old Franciscan convent, while the parish church of l’Île-Rousse, the Immaculée Conception de Marie, is on the west of the main square, with its enormous date palms (planted 1890) in the shade of which it is good to play a game of pétanque.
The new town blends harmoniously with the old at the place Paoli, shaded by hundred year old plane trees, where it is good to take the summer air. The old town offers visitors the chance to stroll on the old paving stones, partly restored, along streets with historic names: Pasquale Paoli, Napoleon, les frères Arena (Arena brothers), Louis Philippe, Agilla..
Built by Pascal Paoli, equipped by its municipal officials, after 1815 with a blazon decorated with the royal fleur-de-lis of France and run for than a half-century by elected Bonapartist officials, l’Île-Rousse is a town with a share in the history of Corsica. Its contradictions make it an attractive and unexpected place for the tourists who come each year to sit down under the plane trees of its beautiful central square.

Places to see in ( Corsica - France ) Algajola
Algajola is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. The inhabitants of the commune are known as Algajolais or Algajolaises. Algajola is a commune on the Balagne coast between Calvi, 12 km to the west, and Ile Rousse, 10 km to the East. It is one of 19 communes in the Canton of Belgodère and not to those of Calvi or Ile Rousse as its location would suggest. It is part of the arrondissement of Calvi.
The village is served by the CFC railway line. During the summer season, it is the Trinighellu stop on the beaches service from Calvi to L'Ile Rousse. There is a single road accessing the commune: the National Route N197. A parallel road accessing Aregno beach to the east starts from the roundabout which was opened in 2010 to the west allows access to the village by the sea. At the roundabout a road also leads to the fishing port/marina of San Damiano.
Algajola has become a popular small resort. Located in Balagne, one of the two tourist poles of Corsica, with a hinterland rich in villages and historic buildings and monuments, it is an idyllic experience for all lovers of the sea, sunsets, and good food.
Alot to see in Algajola such as :
The Algajola Chateau-fortLogo monument historique - rouge sans texte.svg or U Castellu was built at the beginning of the 16th century just before 1531 on the ruins of the Lomellini Tower (Genoese nobility) to be the residence of the Governor of Balagne for Genoa until 1764. It is now privately owned. The chateau has been classified as a historical monument since 15 July 1965.
The small Port of San Damiano. It is located 7 km west of L'Île-Rousse and 15 km from Calvi. It is sheltered by the Punta San Damiano from frequent strong winds from north to west.
The Citadel. Algajola was an advanced Genovese position for a long time before Calvi. Today the small fortress is well maintained and has as attractive silhouette with its protruding watchtower.
The Parish Church of Saint-George (15th century), burned by the Saracens, then remodeled in 1618. The building integrated into the defence system of the village and has an original square bell tower.
The Chapel of Saint-Michel was built near the sea in the 12th century to the east of the village. This small maritime chapel has recently been restored from the incessant attacks of time and the sea.

Day 1: Ajaccio
Our Corsica sailing adventure starts from Ajaccio which is the largest city in Corsica and the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Feel free to explore the city’s landmarks including the 16th-century Notre-Dame Cathedral, Fesch Museum, and Maison Bonaparte before we embark on our journey. On the first day of our yacht charter trip, we will visit all the picturesque areas around Ajaccio and anchor at nearby coves and small inlets.
Day 2: Cargèse
Our first destination outside Ajaccio is the small village of Cargèse that offers plenty of water sports including scuba diving, jet-skiing, wind-surfing, and swimming. Admire the stunning rock formations and go sunbathing on a picturesque sandy beach. In the evening, you can watch the sunset and have dinner at the excellent Bel'mare Hotel. Before we leave, make sure to visit both Latin and the Greek Church in Cargèse.
Day 3: Golfe de Porto / Girolata
On day 3, we will be sailing down the gorgeous west coast of Corsica and along Golfe de Porto until we reach the protected port of Girolata. Being a part of the magnificent Scandola Nature reserve, this area offers excellent anchorage and boasts a variety of wildlife, as well as crystal-clear blue waters. The Genoese tower stands above the village and is definitely worth visiting. Despite its small size, this village has plenty of basic facilities for tourists, as well as a couple of cool restaurants.
Day 4: Calvi
After a nice breakfast on the yacht, it’s time to sail to Calvi, a charming coastal town with cute seafront lined houses and a majestic citadel. The town’s luxury yacht-filled harbor has all the necessary facilities to make your stay here relaxing. It is also just minutes away from the lovely beach of L’Ile Rousse where you can go swimming. In the afternoon, walk along the beautiful boardwalk or climb up to the citadel for an amazing view of Calvi.
Day 5: Golfe de La Revallata / Girolata
On day 5, we are departing early in the morning to the Gulf de La Revellata which is an ideal destination for water activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming. After a couple of hours relaxing on the beach, we will sail to Girolata to explore all the deserted creeks and small caves. Thanks to the volcanic origin of the island, expect to see plenty of breathtaking landscapes!
Day 6: Capo Rosso / Cala Di Palù
The sixth day of your Corsica yacht charter includes a visit to Capo Rosso and Cala di Palu. This area is perfect for diving, and there are dozens of local dive schools that rent all the necessary equipment. For dinner, we can go to the lovely Hotel des Roches Rouges that offers both local and international cuisine and boats magnificent views from their outdoor veranda.

No Corsica yacht charter vacation is complete without visiting the picturesque Bay of Sagone. Dotted with dozens of coves, the Bay of Sagone is home to a number of secluded sandy beaches where you can find some peace and quiet.
