The Southern Scenic Route connects the highlight so you can combine several activities in one day, but do not rush through, as this area deserves your holiday time!

SOUTHLAND - End of the World
Southland NZ: End of the World (Catlins & Invercargill)
Nobody spends a week in Invercargill… Except us.
We waited out the weather in NZ’s southernmost city, hoping for a few clear days to explore Stewart Island. Stewart Island is the only place in NZ where the kiwi bird isn’t considered endangered. One’s chances of spotting a kiwi in the wild is greatly increased because Stewart Island kiwis are diurnal and feed both during the night and day. However, the weather spoiled our plans to spot a kiwi, and instead we found ways to entertain ourselves in Invercargill (including a visit to Splash Palace and trying the famous Bluff Oysters).
After spending a week in Invercargill, it was time to move on even though the weather hadn’t cleared. On to the Catlins! The Catlins is a beautiful and dramatic place in New Zealand.
Slope Point
Slope Point is the southernmost point of the South Island of New Zealand. Eroded cliffs drop down to the sea below, and there’s a signpost which shows the distance to the Equator and the South Pole. It’s pretty neat to be standing closer to the South Pole than the Equator! The entire area is windswept and looks like I’m standing on another planet.
Nugget Point Lighthouse
Nugget Point was one the highlights of our day in the Catlins. A picturesque lighthouse sits atop a steep headland with a scattering of rocky islets below (The Nuggets). The five minute walk to the lighthouse has incredible views along the coastline, where you can spot seals sunbathing on the rocks below.
Other highlights in the Catlins include: Purakaunui Falls, Teapot Land in Owaka, and feeding the mini horses in Niagara Falls.
We finished our exploration of Southland in sleepy Taieri Mouth. The weather cleared, and we had a beautiful morning on the beach.

Journey Through The Catlins | New Zealand South Island with Kids S2 Ep9
Join as we journey through the southern most part of the New Zealand South Island. We make a stop by the Mcleans Falls. Absolutely gorgeous and only a 10 minute walk! We then journey to Curio Bay to surf with some dolphins! Next stop nearby is the petrified forest. It has tree stumps and logs from millions of years ago frozen in time! We then called it a night and headed to our freedom campsite. The next morning we were woken by a rooster who wouldn't leave us along while we were cooking eggs for breakfast. Our next stop was the Clifden Cave and then a day walk on the Kepler Track!
South Island Road Trip (New Zealand)
I booked a flight to travel by myself about 10 months before the trip to New Zealand in September and my friend Sacha decided to join. We chose to road trip the South Island of New Zealand for the majority of the trip and I have to say it is one of the most beautifully diverse landscapes I've ever seen.
We slept in the van (which for some reason we nicknamed Bertha) for a few nights and Bertha sadly broke down on us twice. All of the GoPro footage from these experiences somehow got lost in translation. I think it would give anyone a good laugh but unfortunately it will most likely never be seen again.
It took me a while to edit this purely because of an overload in projects but overall it still isn' t my favorite piece I've put out. Really just wanted to finish it up and share it with you all.

Thicket Burn Campsite Tour and Review | Best Free Campsites Camping New Zealand
Take a quick video tour of Thicket Burn campsite and campground. The site is located close to Lillburn and Rowallan as well as Lake Hauroko.
Thicket Burn Campsite Review:
We really enjoyed our time at the Thicket Burn Campsite because of the close proximity to Lake Hauroko. In fact, if you're looking for a free campsite close to Lake Hauroko this is your only choice! The lake is about a 10 min (6km) drive from the Thicket Burn Campsite and a great starting point on the awesome Lookout Point hike.
The hike itself took us over the 3 hours listed as we stopped often for pictures and video. The campground was another great free campsite with the only downside being the empty water tank. Even after a night of rain campers quickly drained the tank the next day.

Thornbury Bridge Picnic Area Tour and Review | Best Free Campsites Motorcamps Camping New Zealand
Review
About as basic as campsite in New Zealand can get while still doing its job well, Thornbury Bridge Picnic Area still has two huge positives going for it.
1.) It's a great place to ride out some bad weather (especially if you're in tents). The site offers many protected places to put up a tent that would shelter it from high winds.
2.) Its literally off the highway so its quite easy to get to.
If you're looking for somewhere scenic to stay, you should keep on driving. This is not a “destination” campsite but it will do for those in transit to someplace further away. The only thing to look at around here is sheep, and even they think you're silly for sticking around for more than one night.

New Zealand: Purakaunui Falls
The Purakaunui Falls are a cascading multi-tiered waterfall on the Purakaunui River, located in the Catlins in the southern South Island of New Zealand.
A highly distinctive cataract, it is an iconic image for southeastern New Zealand, and was featured on a New Zealand postage stamp in 1976.
The falls are located 17 km (11 mi) to the southwest of the small town of Owaka and five kilometres (3 miles) from the river's outflow into the Pacific Ocean. They can be reached via a short, well-signposted bush walk from a gravel side-road off the main Owaka-Invercargill road.
The falls are in an isolated area surrounded by native bush in a scenic reserve of 5 km² (2 sq mi), and fall 20 m (66 ft) in three tiers.
There have been many pictures taken of the Purakaunui Falls over the years and they are now considered to be the most photographed set of falls on the South and North Islands of New Zealand.
