Cabo Verde is a tropical archipelago situated off the coast of Africa with rugged mountains, green valleys and arid deserts, an exotic island paradise set amid the Atlantic. In the north east of the islands is Sal, an island of both wind and sunshine and a strange and exciting world with a volcanic lunar landscape. On the other side of the island, Palmeira, otherwise known as Pedra Lume, is Sal’s most important port from which the whole of the island’s maritime trade is handled. Santiago lies in the south and is the largest island in the achipelago and is where the Portuguese, as the first settlers, set up a military station. The family genes and traditions of two continents have produced a population with various characteristics of both culture and lifestyle. The islands offer many kinds of fresh food as well as products from around the world. São Vicente is a centre of culture and its colourful mansions are reminiscent of the heyday of the original city. Explorer Diego Alfonso would not have dreamed that one day the port would become a large maritime coal storage depot indeed, the first overseas telephone cable was laid through it. Great explorers once sailed in this region where fishing and salt defined the islanders’ lives. All around, volcanic mountains, desert landscapes and tropical valleys. Alagoas é uma das 27 unidades federativas do Brasil. Está situado no leste da região Nordeste e tem como limites Pernambuco (N e NO), Sergipe (S), Bahia (SO) e o Oceano Atlântico (L). Ocupa uma área de 27.778,506 km², sendo ligeiramente maior que o Haiti. Sua capital é a cidade de Maceió e a sede administrativa é o Palácio República dos Palmares.
Inicialmente, o território alagoano constituía a parte sul da Capitania de Pernambuco, vindo a ter autonomia em 1817. Sua ocupação decorreu da expansão para o sul da lavoura de cana-de-açúcar da Capitania de Pernambuco, que necessitava de novas áreas de cultivo. Surgiram, assim, Porto Calvo, Alagoas (atual Marechal Deodoro) e Penedo, núcleos que orientaram, por muito tempo, a colonização e a vida econômica e social da região. A invasão holandesa em Pernambuco estendeu-se a Alagoas em 1631. Os invasores foram expulsos em 1645, depois de intensos combates em Porto Calvo, deixando a economia local totalmente desorganizada. A fuga de escravos negros durante a invasão holandesa criou um sério problema de falta de mão de obra nas plantações de cana. Agrupados em aldeamentos denominados quilombos, os negros só foram dominados completamente no final do século XVII, com a destruição do quilombo mais importante, o de Palmares. Na década de 1840, a vida política local foi marcada pelo conflito entre os lisos, conservadores, e os cabeludos, liberais. No início do século XX, o sertão alagoano viveu a experiência pioneira de Delmiro Gouveia, empresário cearense que instalou, em Pedra (atualmente, Delmiro Gouveia), a fábrica de linhas Estrela, que chegou a produzir 200 mil carretéis diários. Delmiro Gouveia foi assassinado em outubro de 1917 em circunstâncias até hoje não esclarecidas, depois de ser pressionado, segundo consta, a vender sua fábrica a firmas concorrentes estrangeiras. Depois de sua morte, suas máquinas teriam sido destruídas e atiradas na cachoeira de Paulo Afonso.
Penúltimo estado brasileiro em área (mais extenso apenas que Sergipe) e 16º em população, é um dos maiores produtores de cana-de-açúcar e coco-da-baía do país e tem na agropecuária a base de sua economia. Terra do sururu, marisco das lagoas que serve de alimento à população do litoral, e da água de coco, Alagoas possui também um dos folclores mais ricos do país.

“La Sape” is a unique movement based in Congo that unites fashion-conscious men who are ready to splurge money they don’t really have on designer clothes. Dressing in stark contrast with their surroundings, these elegant ambiance-makers become true local celebrities… but this fame comes at a price.
The Republic of the Congo in Central Africa can’t boast of high standards of living. Yet, there are men here who are prepared to spend a fortune on designer suits. They call themselves “sapeurs” – members of the “La Sape” movement. “La Sape” comes from French and stands for “The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People”. For its adherents, it’s all about style and elegance, the right combination of colours and textures, brand-names and the highest quality materials. They derive true joy from showing off their attire on the streets of Brazzaville – the country’s capital and the centre of the “La Sape” movement. Walking down dusty streets lined with clay houses, they turn heads and feel like kings. And there’s no price they won’t pay for this.
In fact, behind the image of success these dandies project, there are often stories of significant financial troubles caused by their extravagant hobby. To afford the price tag of their designer clothes, “sapeurs” have to save, borrow and even steal money, sometimes bringing ruin to their families. But even the grim consequences of their indulgent dressing habits often don’t stop “sapeurs” from spending money they don’t really have. They are in constant competition with each other and investing in their image is more important to them than improving their living conditions. Dressing smartly becomes a true addiction that is very hard to conquer.
However, some “sapeurs” do strive to find a balance between looking chic and being reasonable with their spending. They insist that the “La Sape” movement isn’t about designer suits but rather developing impeccable taste. They make an emphasis on learning to dress well but within one’s means.
