Places to see in ( Niort - France )
Places to see in ( Niort - France )
Niort is a large town situated on the Sèvre river about half way between Poitiers and La Rochelle in the Poitou-Charentes region of western France. Niort has an interesting historical centre, with houses dating from the medieval and renaissance eras and also several monuments of interest to discover, as well as a substantial amount of more recent development - it is an important centre for local business and finance in this region of France.
The old and new parts of central Niort are separated by the large Place de la Breche. It is the historical centre that is of interest to visitors. Start your visit perhaps with a stroll across the bridge in the centre of Niort, which gives nice views across the town and the church as well as the donjon.
The Donjon, on the river banks in Niort, is a major part of a medieval castle and the most important monument in Niort that dominates the town centre. In part the donjon dates from the 12th century, when it was built in the roman style by Henry II (Henry Plantagenet) and Richard the Lionheart, and is one of the largest castles from this period that remains in France.
The building includes two adjacent donjons separated by a logis: the two donjons are similar in design but one is a few metres taller than the other, both have round towers in each corner. The views across Niort from the donjon terraces are a highlight of a visit, and there is also a Museum of Ethnology and Archaeology to visit in the building.
On an island in the river just across from the donjon you can see Fort Foucault, the tower of which is the remains of a 12th century castle. The Pilori is an interesting renaissance style building dating from the 14th century that was once the town hall for Niort. The building takes its name from the pillory that previously stood here. The whole building, in particular around the doors and windows, features decorative stonework. The pilori is now used as an exhibition center for local artists.
There are several churches in Niort of which the most important is the Church of Notre-Dame, built in the gothic style in the 14th-16th centuries. The tall spire of the church makes it the tallest building in the Deux-Sevres department. Also in Niort you will see the Church of Saint-André, a 19th century rebuilding of a medieval church that originally stood here and clearly identified by its two tall symmetrical spires; the small Church of Saint-Florent (roman style, 11th century) which has some unusual engravings inset in the church walls; and the Church of Saint-Etienne (19th century, built in neo-gothic style).
The Town hall in Niort is an imposing neo-renaissance style building with a large central campanile built at the end of the 19th century. The 19th century market hall, a large structure built in the glass and steel design that was popular at the time (1869). It is one of the most impressive market halls of this type in France, and the market itself has a very extensive range of fresh produce available. Markets are held here every day except Monday with those on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday being the largest.
Elsewhere as you explore Niort old town you will see several half-timbered houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Maison de la Vierge is particularly interesting because it has a statue of the Virgin and child in one corner. Next to te Niort Tourist Office on Rue Brisson you will enjoy exploring the many arts and craft shops along the Quai des Arts. If you are looking for presents to take away with you this is the place to find them.
( Niort - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Niort . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Niort - France

Bayonne, an urban gem in the French Way of St. James
Bayonne is an urban gem located on the shores of the Bay of Basque, close to the Pyrenees in the French Basque Country.
It is one of the largest cities of the region of Aquitaine and it's also one of the most beautiful, located at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers.
Bayonne Cathedral known as The Saint Mary's Cathedral is an elegant Gothic building, constructed in the 13th century and it was named one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, like a monument that integrates the French Way of St. James.
Another monument is the Old Castle in the city center. The Old Castle construction began in the 11th century on the location of the Roman castrum and was finally finished six centuries later.
The medieval layout in it's narrow streets is appreciated. A lovely detail is that we can't see in the building's front a single cable.
This city with more than a quarter of a million inhabitants is a neat and charming French city.

3 Days in Paris, France - 3 - Petit Palais, best Art experience in Paris
A real-life travel video by Travel Flix.
On our last day we concentrated on the Petit Palais and the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts. Like the Grand Palais, which it faces, it was built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle.
The Beaux-Arts style Petit Palais was designed by Charles Girault, and is around an octi-circular courtyard and garden, similar to the Grand Palais. Its Ionic columns, grand porch, and dome echo those of the Invalides across the river. The tympanum depicting the city of Paris surrounded by muses is the work of sculptor Jean Antoine Injalbert.
The Petit Palais has served as a model for other public buildings, notably for the Royal Museum for Central Africa located in Tervuren, Belgium; and the Museo de Bellas Artes (fine arts museum) in Santiago, Chile.
The museum displays paintings by painters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Nicolas Poussin, Claude Gellée, Fragonard, Hubert Robert, Greuze and a remarkable collection of 19th-century painting and sculpture: Ingres, Géricault, Delacroix, Courbet, Monet, Sisley, Pissarro, Cézanne, Modigliani, Carpeaux, Maillol, Rodin
It's free, uncrowded, peaceful, and beautiful. The Louvre and Musee d'orsay are also fabulous, but here you see a representative, condensed collection, that is manageable, quiet, and inspiring. (and they have a great cafe!)
Music: Thaxted by Gustove Holst, performed by Kevin MacLeod.
The Montparnasse district
The Montparnasse district
The Montparnasse district is situated on the Left Bank. It goes from the Necker hospital at the corner of rue de Sevres and Bd Montparnasse to the Closerie des Lilas at the corner of Bd Port Royal.
It owes its name Mont Parnasse to the students who, after 1725, nicknamed it after an artificial hill made of rubble between Bd du Montparnasse and Boulevard Raspail.
Montparnasse was at its height between the 20s and 50s, when it became the playground for famous painters such as Picasso, Soutine, Modigliani, Dali, Giacometti.... everyone who contributed to the glory of 20th century art....
La Coupole with its art deco design and 27 columns painted by the artists of the time, and other brasseries such as Le Select, Le Dome and La Rotonde in the Bd Montparnasse, were all frequented by famous people: Cocteau, Aragon, Josephine Baker, Malraux, Prevert, Edith Piaf, etc.
Kiki de Montparnasse, who was the model for Foujita, Modigliani and others and also Man Ray's mistress, was the district's muse.
A temple of literature and painting, Montparnasse was also the district of the Breton people who arrived at Gare Montparnasse and opened cafés and crêperies...and of course, if you like oysters and buckwheat waffles, you will undoubtedly choose to go there and try them.
If you fancy a pleasant stroll through the district...here's a recommended route:
Start in rue Campagne Première which crosses the Bd du Montparnasse and Bd Raspail and is still populated by a large number of artists' workshops. If you're a fan of the 1920s, you'll enjoy the authentic facades of the period.
And just nearby, if you fancy a scare, almost on the corner of Bd Raspail and Bd Edgar Quinet, take a walk down Rue Emile Richard, the only street in Paris that has no buildings for 400m...and with good reason, it's a simple cut-through between the two walls of the Montparnasse cemetery...and if you're approached by an attacker there's no possible escape route either left or right ...
Before taking a turn in the Jardin du Luxembourg - even if it is famous for being part of the Latin Quarter - go back up Bd du Montparnasse to Bd Port Royal and have lunch at the Closerie des Lilas and you might even find yourself sitting on a bench once occupied by Emile Zola or Théophile Gaultier...and, comfortably installed on the leather seats, surrounded by wood panelling, you can imagine yourself listening to Fitzgerald giving his first reading of The Great Gatsby to Hemingway....two regular customers ...
Finally, go down rue d'Assas, walking through the Jardins de l'Observatoire to reach the Jardin du Luxembourg which is home to the Senate. 106 statues representing, among many others, Jose Maria de Heredia, Beethoven, Flaubert and Chopin will fill your walk with musical and poetic dreams. The garden designed by Marie de Medici with its different areas - the orangery, pear orchard and large lake - is a haven of peace right in the centre of the Left Bank.
And finally, don't forget that Montparnasse also welcomed some of the most famous political exiles such as Lenin and Trotsky! Because the Left Bank is much more than a simple bank of the river Seine...it's the home of free and creative thinking for discerning Parisians!
Enjoy your walk!
