St. Anthony serves as a main service centre for northern Newfoundland and southern Labrador. St. Anthony and surrounding area has an approximate population of 4,330. The population of the town itself was 2,258 in 2016,compared with 2,418 in 2011, 2,476 in 2006 and 2,730 in 2001.

It is the only confirmed site of a Norse or Viking settlement in North America outside of the settlements found in Greenland.Dating to around the year 1000, L'Anse aux Meadows is widely accepted as evidence of pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact. It is notable for its possible connection with the attempted colony of Vinland established by Leif Erikson around the same period or, more broadly, with Norse exploration of North America. It was named a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1978.
