On 9/11, This Canadian Town Welcomed In Stranded Passengers
In the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, United States airspace was shut down and hundreds of inbound flights needed a place to land. Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador became one of those places. That day, 7,000 shaken and disoriented passengers arrived in Gander, nearly doubling the town’s population of 11,000. The entire community got involved by literally and figuratively opening its doors to stranded passengers who never forgot the hospitality of the small Canadian town.

DESTROYED by Bad Weather in Newfoundland | Travel Photography Vlog
I made the journey back to Canada. And, on the way, I made a stop for some photography in St. John's, Newfoundland. Only problem is that I got destroyed by bad weather. So I tried to do some landscape photography in the rain.
Check out my images on Instagram @brendanvanson.
It's time to leave the UK for a bit. Though, I'll be back at the end of September. I am headed home to Canada for a couple weeks to catch up with family and friends, and maybe revisit some of my favourite photography locations.
When booking my flights to Canada I saw that there were flights with a 12 hour layover in St. John's, Newfoundland. I've never been to Newfoundland, so I jumped on the chance to go for a visit and see what it's like. It turns out that it's beautiful.
After a 5 hour flight, I landed in St. John's and the weather wasn't good. But, it would bet worse. In fact, it might have been the worst weather for photography imaginable. It was cloudy, rainy, windy, and just miserable.
But, despite the bad weather, I still had so much fun. It turns out that Newfoundland is absolutely beautiful. It's just stunning. And, I think it has the potential to be a landscape photographer's dream location. It's great for travel photography in general with lots of cool houses and beautiful vistas.
Landscape photography here would be easy if the weather wasn't so wild. There are some of the most beautiful seascapes I've ever seen. And, I tried to photograph them, but the weather kept beating me back. In the end, I did try to find a spot to shoot some images out at Cape Spear, but it was a challenge to be sure.
Landscape photography is never easy, it's all about catching the right conditions, light, and scene. And, it turns out that finding the perfect scene is actually the easiest part. Waiting for the right light and weather is often the biggest challenge.
In the end, the bad weather won and I didn't get an image despite the beauty of Newfoundland.
Still, I'm so happy I made a stop in Newfoundland. It is a really cool place and a spot I really want to go back and explore more.
I think it's an amazing spot for a landscape photographer or a travel photographer.
In the end, I slept in the back seat of the rental car I was in, and called it a night in Newfoundland.
The Canada vlogs have just begun. I think they'll be fun. I just hope I get better weather than I got today!
Tomorrow, I'm leaving Newfoundland and heading towards Alberta.
