Driving the Sun Road, Glacier National Park, west to east
“Going to the Sun” Americas MOST PHOTOGRAPHED road in United States. Going-to-the-Sun Road is a scenic mountain road in the Rocky Mountains of the western United States, in Glacier National Park in Montana. The Sun Road is the only road that traverses the Continental Divide through Logan Pass at an elevation of 6,646 feet (2,026 m), which is the highest point on the road. Construction began in July 1921 and was completed in 1932 with formal dedication in the following summer on July 1933. The road is one of the most difficult roads in North America to snowplow. Good web site to see more in depth details of the pull outs & overlooks:

Glacier National Park plow crews reach Logan Pass
By Zach Schermele (originally posted to krtv.com)
GLACIER NATIONAL PARK – Snow-plow crews at Glacier National Park finally reached Logan Pass Saturday morning, a long-awaited milestone in the prolonged spring plowing season to clear the park’s renowned Going-to-the-Sun Road.
“The plows have reached Logan Pass,” stated a social media post from the park Saturday. “[F]rom our Logan Pass Parking Lot, you can see where the plows ha[ve] made an initial pass at least as far as the end of the parking lot.”
According to the park’s website, 29 miles of the Going-to-the-Sun-Road are currently open for travel. The west side of the park has been plowed up to Rimrocks, and east side plow crews have — to date — progressed all the way to Siyeh Bend.
The route’s plowed sections allow for visitors to drive “15.5 miles from the park’s West Entrance to Avalanche” and “13.5 miles from the St. Mary Entrance to Jackson Glacier Overlook,” the park’s website goes on to state. The area between Jackson Glacier Overlook and Avalanche is closed presently.
Other prohibited roads include Inside North Fork Road (at Logging Creek RS and Fishing Creek) and Cut Bank Road (at Ranger Station). Segments open to vehicle and foot traffic consist of Camas Road, Chief Mountain Road, Many Glacier Road, and Two Medicine Road, to name a few.
Spring plowing on the scenic mountain roadway is an annual — and typically arduous — process. This year, it began April 3. Steady progress has been underway ever since. Current estimates approximate that the earliest date at which the upper region of Going-to-the-Sun Road could open is June 22.
Skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and biking and other forms of similar recreation are not allowed, and access is not accessible, beyond Lake McDonald Lodge while crews are working.
The park’s website makes a point to note, however, that the opening date “could be later, depending on weather and plowing conditions encountered by park plowing crews.” Crews are now working their way through Oberlin Bend below the park summit.
“As you can see, there is no shortage of snow remaining up at the pass,” the Facebook post said.

Driving Glacier National Park's Going to the Sun Road
Welcome to Glacier National Park and the Going to the Sun Road!
We are about to embark on a road trip through one of the most spectacular national parks in the United States. Along the way we will share some highlights of the park and, in particular, its history and that of the road.
Glacier National Park is located in the Rocky Mountains in the Northwest of Montana.
Recorded in September 2019.
This video was rendered in 4k and was shot on numerous cameras recording simultaneously. There were 7 cameras in all, 3 of them record 4k, the others record 1080p or in the case of the rear cam only, 720p. The best views are seen on the 4k cameras, but there is some up converted footage as well.

Fall Trip 2018: Jasper, Banff and Glacier National Park (US) - 4k UHD
Five day fall trip to Jasper National Park AB CA, Banff National Park AB CA and Glacier National Park MT, USA from Sep 20th - 25th 2018.
Trip Highlights:
Jasper National Park:
- Maligne Canyon
- Maligne Lake
- Athabasca Glacier Icewalk, Columbia Icefield
- Athabasca Falls
Banff National Park:
- Lake Moraine
- Lake Louise
- Peyto Lake Overlook
Calgary AB, Canada:
- Calgary Tower
Glacier National Park MT, USA
- Going to the Sun Road (GTTS)
- Bird Woman Falls
- Lunch Creek
- Wild Goose Island
- Jackson Glacier Overlook
- Trail of the Cedars
- Sun Point
- Sunrift Gorge
- Overlook near Highline Trail
- Logan Pass Visitor Center
One of the most beautiful Mountains, Lakes and water falls in the whole world, not just US/Canada (in my opinion). Lakes/waterfalls are easily accessible in Jasper and Banff National Parks. Going-to- the-Sun road in Glacier National Park has frequent overlooks/viewpoints to stop and take pictures.
Jasper vs Banff vs Glacier: Personally I think each NP is unique but I would choose Banff if I have to pick one. I have listed below why I would pick one NP over the other:
Banff NP:
-Massive Mountains and Glacial Lakes
- Ease of access to view points.
Jasper NP:
- Massive mountains
- Amazing waterfalls and canyons.
- Athabasca Glacier/Ice walk
Glacier NP MT:
- Peaks not as massive as Banff/Jasper NP but they are in the
same league.
- Unique glacier-carved mountains
- GTTS (Going-to-the-Sun road) with easy access and view points.
- Cheaper accommodations and many restaurants nearby
- Offers more trails
Tips:
- Please fill up your gas as soon as it goes below half tank near
Jasper. There is a gas station in Jasper but it closes early and
after that next gas station is more than 100 km away.
- These NP are huge (especially Jasper and Banff NP). Driving from
Jasper to end of Jasper NP can roughly take around 2 hours, so
plan accordingly and have your accommodations close by,
preferably at Jasper to visit Jasper NP and Banff/Canmore to visit
Banff NP.
- Prefer not to visit busy places e.g. Lake Louise, Moraine etc. on
week days as it can get too crowded.
- Keep your schedule somewhat flexible as weather can change
quickly and you should have other alternatives to visit.
- If you are planning to visit in September, keep in mind that it can
get really cloudy at the end of the month. Try to stay between 10th
and 18th Sep.
- Fall is great time to visit to beat the crowds.

Check out this great trail in Glacier Bay National Park. This video was created by Glacier Bay National Park.
“Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is in the Alaska panhandle west of Juneau. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the area around Glacier Bay a national monumentunder the Antiquities Act on February 25, 1925.[3] Subsequent to an expansion of the monument by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) enlarged the national monument by 523,000 acres (2116.5 km2) on December 2, 1980 and in the process created Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve,[4] with 57,000 additional acres (230.7 km2) of public land designated as national preserve to the immediate northwest of the park in order to protect a portion of the Alsek River and related fish and wildlife habitats while allowing sport hunting.
“Glacier Bay became part of a binational UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, was inscribed as a Biosphere Reserve in 1986 and in 1994 undertook an obligation to work with Hoonah and Yakutat Tlingit Native American organizations in the management of the protected area.[5] In total the park and preserve cover 5,130 square miles (13,287 km2). Most of Glacier Bay is designated wilderness area which covers 4,164 square miles (10,784 km2).”
