Kintla Lake Campground in Glacier National Park offers tent and car camping near the shores of Kintla Lake and Kintla Creek in the remote northwestern portion of the park. 13 primitive sites available on a first come first served basis. Pit toilets and hand water pump are available. The access road is narrow and rough dirt not advisable for RVs or trailers.
There is no real privacy between campsites but the remote nature of the park, amazing scenery and neat trails make up for the ambiance. If you are looking to get away from people this is not the place to go.
Only a couple of bear boxes are available at this campground too. Why put bear boxes where they are needed? Be conscious of your handling and storing of food/ scented items. Bears frequent this campground.
Bring the kayak, canoe, paddle board, and swim trunks. Beautiful Kintla Lake beckons your attention and is the highlight of the location (along with the scenic creek that flows out of it).
It is 15 miles from the Polebridge Entrance Station to Kintla Lake Campground via a very rough dirt road. We advise “borrowing a friends” car or truck for the trip or going really slow. One benefit of a slow trip is being able to view a ton of wild life along the route.
A small dump station is available next to the pit toilet.

Backpacking Glacier National Park: Kintla Lake, Boulder Pass, Hole in the Wall, Bowman Lake
This is a 4 day backpacking trip along one of the more premier routes in Glacier National Park. We start at Kintla Lake, hike over Boulder Pass to Hole in the Wall, and then go down through Brown Pass to Bowman Lake. We have lots of thunderstorms and rain. This is also the return of Mario. I met Mario by chance twice. First, in 2014 in Yellowstone when he picked me up while I was hitching a ride, and then again in Glacier while at the West Glacier Bar, when he then joined me and Keith for a backpacking trip. I hope to have a trip report written up soon for this. You can take a closer look at the route here:

Glacier National Park Backpacking - Kintla to Bowman - September 2018
I traveled back to Glacier National Park in mid-September for the 'grand finale' hike of the 2018 season.
Just a few weeks before the trip the 'Boundary' fire started in the North Fork area, closing all the trails and backcountry campsites on my permit. I was 99% certain this trip wasn't going to happen so I made plans for an alternate trip to Pictured Rocks in Michigan. But then snow came to Glacier in early September, moderating the fires and smoke. It wasn't until two days before my flight that I made the final decision to make my destination Glacier.
Following the theme of my other 2018 hikes, this one had more than its share of 'adventure' - forest fires and smoke, cold temperatures combined with rain, sleet, ice pellets, snow, and wind... plus a bit of hypothermia. But it also had in abundance the indescribably breathtaking scenery that the backcountry of Glacier has to offer. And it provided what is certainly the most enjoyable night I've ever spent in a backcountry campsite on the last night in Bowman Lake campground.
For those who have watched my other videos this one is done in the same style - a little over an hour in length, intended to bring the audience along for the ride, and with a still picture slide show with music at the end. If you just have a few minutes skip to the end and enjoy the pictures.

Glacier National Park Backpacking Bowman Lake Backcountry
Glacier National Park, Montana. July 17-19, 2018
LINKS BELOW will skip you ahead to points of interest
We begin with the ride from West Glacier area to Polebridge
0:40 Bowman Lake foot front country campground and hiker parking quick info. note dayhiker parking often fills by noon and you will be turned around.
1:32 Bowman Lake picnic area
1:44 backpacking info and begin hiking.
2:40 view from foot of Bowman Lake. hike is mostly in the trees but there will be some nice views along the way as well.
3:25 animal remains, likely eaten by grizzly.
4:03 Numa Peak
4:40 Backcountry campground info. sites, bear pole, food prep area and more.
10:08 evening views and Jump in the water. I'll spend hours looking at this view over these few days...
11:18 Salt Crazed deer buck steals a sweat soaked shirt. Salt seekers are a real concern in Glacier. From mice to moose, animals might want to chew on your salty items... Secure them!
13:05 more views until sunset
13:38 up before Sunrise
14:17 Begin dayhike towards Brown Pass. Many people who hike this area do a loop from Kintla Lake over Boulder and Brown Pass to Bowman Lake. I highly recommend watching videos of that loop, links at bottom. Our hike was honestly the amateur version, but still very nice.
15:05 huge scat, likely grizzly. way bigger than my size 12 shoe. Others thought some of the piles we saw may have been elk but after some research it seems most likely all piles were bear.
16:22 lunch stop with views
18:09 partial ascent of Brown Pass, views begin
19:40 views and more views over the next few minutes as we gain elevation. BIG Views out last and we descend again.
24:40 back at camp, Deer Again and more sunset views into the evening.
25:58 very short off trail exploration and sunrise views
Last we'll hike out and get a last look from the foot of the lake.. I'll recommend stopping at Northern Lights Saloon for a good meal when you get back to Polebridge, and Home Ranch Bottoms is a good stop for supplies and a shower... Thanks for coming along with us!
Catherine's video from about 2 weeks earlier below, they do the full Boulder Pass loop from the other direction. Shows big weather difference in a short time and shows how easy our hike really was...
Joey's video that helped us decide to hike in this area below... While i knew we couldn't tackle the entire loop, i like the large lakes and deep forest. This area is less visited than most parts of the Park but is also not too far from the west Glacier area we were in for most of our trip. We wanted to see something different and this could not have worked out any better...Maybe some day we get to do the entire loop, or another part of it...
Bowman & Kintla Lakes - Glacier NP - Montana
Shakey footage from 2009 when I was a newbee videographer, but my favorite National Park. I am missing Glacier NP & the Rocky Mountains. These two lakes are on the northwest side of the park nearest the Canadian border. Wateron National Park is on the Canadian side and the combined as an International Peace Park. Breathtakingly beautiful both.

Subscribe to my YouTube Channel ----- - - - - - Kintla Lake is located in the northwestern most part of Glacier National Park, only 5 miles from Canada. It is a long drive over a one-lane, dusty road to get there. There are few places to park once you get there, as well. That being said, the scenery is magnificent. This video shows some of the road as it goes through a dense forest on its way to the lake. Kintla Lake Road - Glacier NP - June 24, 2017 - Travels with Phil by Phil Konstantin -
S5 E2 Glacier National Park, MT Boulder Pass Trail Day 1 August 2017
Our first day on the Boulder Pass Trail traced along the picturesque north shores of Kintla Lake and Upper Kintla Lake. This scenery is incredible! I said to Gene.
This is just the beginning; Just wait until we cross over Boulder Pass tomorrow and past Hole in the Wall. He said.
The scenery over there is something else.

Mission Outdoors: Glacier National Park
In August 2012, the Sierra Club hosted military veterans on an expedition through Glacier National Park to study climate change. This 12-minute documentary showcases each participant's unique perspective on what it means to protect, preserve, and defend the nation. Read more about the Mission Outdoors program: -
Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization -- with more than two million members and supporters. Our successes range from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, we've made history by leading the charge to address climate disruption by moving away from the dirty fossil fuels and toward a clean energy economy.

Quartz Creek Campground in west Glacier National Park near Polebridge Montana offers 7 primitive camping sites in a wooded setting off Inside North Fork Rd. Several sites front Quartz Creek. No water is available at this remote first come first served campground. Best suited to tents, car camping, and small rvs/ truck campers due to tight access inside the campground and the rough dirt road to access the location. Hiking trails start from the area.
Quartz Creek and close by Logging Creek are the two most sparsely visited campgrounds accessible via vehicle. If you are looking to get away from crowds in any season these two are the place to go.
The campground has a loop dirt road and dirt parking pads. Bears frequent the area so care is needed to properly store and handle food/ scented items.
Mountain bikers can continue south along Inside North Fork Rd all the way to Fish Creek Campground if they choose.
