Redrock Falls, Glacier National Park
Redrock Falls is in the Many Glacier area on the east side of Glacier National Park. The historic Many Glacier Hotel is located on the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake. The trail can be accessed from this point as well as the campground. The trail follows a path through lush meadows, glacial lakes and tumbling waterfalls. The scenery is some of the best anywhere in America. The experience is overwhelming for any outdoor adventurer. Redrock Falls is about half way down the Bullhead Lake Trail. The round trip from the Swiftcurrent Motor Lodge to the falls and back is approximately 4.5 miles. Bears and moose are often encountered so always follow the precautions of the Park Rangers. - Glacier's Historic Boats - National Park
In 1910, when Glacier National Park was first established, early sightseers found that boat tours offered a comfortable and adventurous way to see the parks wild landscape.
In 1929, a Flathead Valley boat builder Billy Swanson finished building the DeSmet, a 57- foot-long boat that he launched onto Lake McDonald. It's been in operation ever since.
The DeSmet was the latest in a series of boats built by Swanson starting in the 1920s including Chief Two Guns, Morning Eagle, Sinopah and the International.
Today, one hundred years after the park's opening, these same classic boats still operate on Glacier's alpine lakes as part of the Glacier Park Boat Company a company owned and operated by the same family that ran tours on the lakes way back in the 1920s. For an adventure you won't soon forget, take a ride on Glacier's historic boats.

Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is a remote refuge located in the high altitude of the Centennial Valley, in the southwestern region of the U.S. state of Montana. Adjacent to Gallatin National Forest and near Yellowstone National Park, the refuge is an integral part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem
The Centennial Valley is surrounded by mountains of the Rocky Mountain range. The Centennial Mountains are the only major east-west trending range of the Rockies. They rise to about 10,000 feet on the south. The north has the lower trending mountains of the Gravelly and Snowcrest ranges, with the Lima Mountains to the west and the Henry's Lake mountains to the east. These mountains provide shelter for a variety of wildlife, create unique weather patterns, and are very scenic! They are young mountains and have a very interesting geologic story intertwined with the geology of Yellowstone.
Winter here is harsh for the animals. Temperatures can go as low as -50 degrees F and snow can be packed high as 3 or 4 feet at times during the winter. Most of the birds go south or to lower elevations, as do the pronghorn, elk and other big game animals. The bears are hibernating and some of the trumpeter swans stay the winter, finding the open water near warmer springs in the refuge. Food is scarce and daylight hours are limited. The refuge staff is at a minimum and often getting to the headquarters area is impossible without snowmobile or snowcat equipment.
n April 22, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Red Rock Lakes Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, which was renamed the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in 1961. Roosevelt’s Executive Order 7023 established Red Rock Lakes “as a refuge and breeding ground for wild birds and animals.”
Since the refuge boundary was established, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has acquired lands from willing landowners or by receiving donations. The Service currently owns 51,386 acres within the approved boundary. The refuge also manages conservation easements totaling 23,806 acres.
Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge has often been called the most beautiful national wildlife refuge in the United States. The rugged Centennial Mountains, rising to more than 10,000 feet, provide a dramatic backdrop for this extremely remote Refuge in Southwest Montana's Centennial Valley. Red Rock Lakes NWR encompasses primarily high mountain, wetland-riparian habitat--the largest in the Greater Yellowstone Area-- and is located near the headwaters of the Missouri River. Several creeks flow into the refuge, creating the impressive Upper Red Rock Lake, River Marsh, and Lower Red Rock Lake. The snows of winter replenish the refuge’s lakes and wetlands that provide secluded habitat for many wetland birds, including the trumpeter swan, white-faced ibis, and black-crowned night herons. The Refuge also includes wet meadows, willow riparian, grasslands, and forest habitats. This diversity provides habitat for other species such as sandhill cranes, long-billed curlews, peregrine falcons, eagles, hawks, moose, badgers, bears, wolves, pronghorns and native fish such as Arctic grayling and westslope cutthroat trout.
The Centennial Valley was well known to the Shoshone-Bannock, the Nez Perce, and other nomadic tribes as a favored travel route between the headwaters of the Big Hole River and the Yellowstone country. The wide stretches of uninterrupted native grasslands provided grazing bison with ample feed and served as their traditional summer range. Settlement by Euro-americans did not occur until 1876. Herds of livestock were driven into the valley and homesteads sprang up in scattered locations. In the early days, market hunting for waterfowl and big game brought some revenue to local residents, but most settlers concentrated on livestock and sporadic lumbering. The long winters, great distances to market, and small land parcels combined to make subsistence difficult. Few survived the depression of the 1930s.
The Monida-Yellowstone stagecoach line passed through Red Rock Lakes NWR on what is now South Valley Road and Red Rock Pass Road. Originally established in 1898, the four-horse drawn stagecoaches carried passengers between the railroad station in Monida and West Yellowstone and Henry's Lake. A note from the Madisonian newspaper from August 28, 1902, notes that the stage line has carried over 12,000 passengers to the National Park this season and are having all they can handle every day. They have had to put on extra teams to accommodate the large number of tourists. The grand era of stagecoach travel in West Yellowstone ended in 1917 when touring cars replaced the stages. Today we took the JEEP!
