Methven is a small town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located near the western edge of the Canterbury Plains, 35 kilometres north of Ashburton. It was originally the railhead of a short branch railway off the Main South Line. Branching off from Rakaia, the Methven Branch travelled through Lauriston and Lyndhurst to Methven and operated from 1880 until 1976. It is a rural service town throughout the year, but undergoes a stark transformation in winter. Mount Hutt skifield is around half an hour away from Methven, the closest town.     Lake Coleridge is located in inland Canterbury, in New Zealand's South Island. Located 35 kilometres to the northwest of Methven, it has a surface area of 47 square kilometres . The lake is situated in an over-deepened valley formed by a glacier over 20,000 years ago in the Pleistocene era. It currently has no natural outflows. There is a little settlement at the lake. The lake is located to the north of the Rakaia River, and is the site of one of the country's earliest hydroelectric schemes, completed in 1914 and built mainly to supply power to Christchurch.     Roundhill Ski Area is a family owned and run ski area in Canterbury, New Zealand, near the town of Lake Tekapo, 1.5 hours from Timaru and 3 hours from both Christchurch & Queenstown. The main runs are accessed by a 1.2 kilometre long T-bar and a shorter T-bar . 2010 saw the installation of a 1.5 km long rope tow rising 630 metres to the Richmond Ridge to give the field 783 metres of vertical drop overall, the largest in New Zealand. This opened the field up to advanced skiers and boarders. The Heritage Express is reportedly the longest rope tow in the world.
