Guanacaste National Park, in Spanish Parque Nacional Guanacaste, is part of the Area de Conservación Guanacaste World Heritage Site, is a National Park in the northern part of Costa Rica, from the slopes of the Orosí and Cacao volcanoes west to the Interamerican Highway where it is adjacent to the Santa Rosa National Park. It was created in 1989, partially due to the campaigning and fund-raising of Dr. Daniel Janzen to allow a corridor between the dry forest and rain forest areas which many species migrate between seasonally. The park covers an area of approximately 340 square kilometers, and includes 140 species of mammals, over 300 birds, 100 amphibians and reptiles, and over 10,000 species of insects that have been identified. It was this high density of bio-diversity that encouraged the Costa Rican government to protect this area. The Guanacaste National Park weaves the neighboring Santa Rosa National Park with the high altitude forests of the two volcanoes, Orosi and Cacao, and the rainforest of the Caribbean in the country's north. The Tempisque River flows through the park's lowland areas. There are dry forests at lower elevations and cloud forests at higher elevations. There are several trails running through the park that offer up good hiking. The trail leading to the Orosi Volcano has pre-Columbian petroglyphs near the plain at El Pedregal. The nearest city is La Cruz to the northwest, and the park contains several facilities notably the headquarters of the Guanacaste Conservation Area, as well as stations at Pitilla in the northeastern corner of the park, Cacao on the southwestern slope of the eponymous volcano, and Maritza which is situated near both volcanoes. In 1989 the park was first established by Executive Decree 19124-MIRENEM/89, to become part of Area de Conservación Guanacaste along with the already existing Santa Rosa and Rincón de la Vieja National Parks. As a whole these formally became part of National System of Conservation Units (SINAC) in 1994 and then later in 1999 a World Heritage site. In 1995 the Junquillal Bay Wildlife Refuge was added to the group of sites. In 1989, 12,000 tonnes of orange waste was dumped on barren soil in agreement with park authorities. 15 years later, the area had grown into a variety of plants.
Santa Maria Sector, Rincon de la Vieja - HIDDEN Gem of Costa Rica!
We explored the area around the Santa Maria Ranger Station on our second day in Rincon de la Vieja. We saw some raging waterfalls, rescued some puppies and took a hard earned soak in the natural hot springs. Along the way, we also saw some interesting insects, a butterfly swarm and beautiful jungle fungi.

1. Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio
Este parque cuenta con uno de los paisajes más impresionantes de todo Costa Rica, el parque cuenta con arenas blancas y verdes follajes en medio de grandes montañas, se encuentra en la zona de vida bosque muy húmedo tropical . Cuenta con gran turismo de personas de otros paises. Tambien se encuentran la raza de monos denominada cariblanca o capuchinos los cuales se ven mucho en las playas en busca de alimento.
3. Volcán Arenal
Esta situado en La Fortuna de San Carlos, Alajuela. Tiene una altura de 1.670 msnm. Antiguamente no se sabia que era un volcan y era llamado Cerro Arenal, hasta que en 1968 hizo erupción. Desde ese entonces en las noches se puede observar la lava saliendo del volcán. Es el volcán más activo de Costa Rica.
4. Río Celeste
Este Río se encuentra en San Carlos de Alajuela. Sus aguas son color celeste gracias a los minerales del Volcán Tenorio. Muchos turistas visitan anualmente este lugar para disfrutar de sus aguas y estar en contacto con la naturaleza y los animales. Sus aguas son frias y sus corrientes de agua son fuertes. Sus principales atractivos son la catarata, los bosques a su alrededor, los teñideros y sus aguas termales.
5. Isla del Coco
Situada en el océano Pacífico perteneciente a la República de Costa Rica, que la declaró Parque Nacional. Por su tamaño, aislamiento, y estado de conservación, la Isla del Coco constituye uno de los sitios naturales privilegiados a nivel mundial.
6. Playas de Costa Rica
Costa Rica contiene una cantidad de playas enorme y todas las playas son hermosas para visitar y disfrutar. Las más populares son Jaco, Tamarindo y Conchal.
7. Parque Nacional Tortuguero
Tortuguero es famoso por el desove de tortugas en sus playas. También existen cantidades de monos, ranas, iguanas, peces, cocodrilos, manatíes, pumas y muchas otras especies de animales. Tambien tiene mucha fauna y naturaleza.
8. Volcan Irazú
La cumbre del volcán tiene varios cráteres, uno de los cuales contiene un lago verde de profundidad variable. Es el volcán activo más alto de Costa Rica. Es fácil visitarlo desde San José, a través de un camino directo hasta los cráteres de la cumbre y un servicio diario de autobús a la cumbre. Es un punto turístico muy popular.
9. Volcán Poás
Se encuentra en el Parque Nacional Volcán Poás. Es un gran atractivo ya que es muy fácil ingresar a verlo y se ingresa por un camino en el bosque. El cráter principal tiene 300 m de profundidad y un diámetro de aproximadamente 1,7 km, es el cráter tipo géiser más grande del mundo y uno de los cráteres más grandes del mundo y se conserva activo en la actualidad, con pequeñas emisiones de gases y una laguna ácida.
10. Parque Nacional Corcovado
Este parque conserva el bosque primario más grande del Pacífico americano, junto con uno de los pocos remanentes de tamaño considerable de bosque tropical húmedo en el mundo. National Geographic lo ha llamado el lugar más intenso del mundo, biológicamente hablando y se estima que ningún lugar en el mundo albergue una mayor diversidad biológica.
12. Cahuita
Es considerado una de las áreas de mayor belleza escénica del país por sus playas de arena blanca, su gran número de cocoteros, su mar de color azul turquesa y su arrecife de coral. Contiene un bosque tropical en el cual los turistas pueden disfrutar de el estar con la naturaleza y se ven muchos animales.
13. Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo
Es considerado una de las áreas de mayor belleza escénica del país por sus playas de arena blanca, su gran número de cocoteros, su mar de color azul turquesa y su arrecife de coral.
14. Cerro Chirripó
Es el punto más alto de Costa Rica una altura de 3.820 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
