“Let’s start with the most important thing – it’s really cold here in Sweden. I mean really cold!! Not like when it’s really cold in Germany. Today it‘s minus 25 degrees celsius!”
Without transfer - there have been direct flights from Hanover, Hahn, Munich and Stuttgart to destinations in Northern Sweden for 15 years now.
“The flight to Arvidsjaur only takes 21/2 hours.”
In the summer months the sun never seems to set. In winter it only shows 3-5 hours before darkness returns.
During these months it doesn’t stay light for long in Lapland but you’ll be sure to see the Northern Lights.
This result of the interaction between the sun and the Earth’s magnetic fields is visible during 7 out of 10 nights – if the sky is clear!
“This is the Hornavarn, a lake here in Arjeplog. With a depth of 221 metres, it’s the deepest one in Sweden.
In Sweden, Batman used to be called Leather Cloth (= Läderlappen?). They simply translated the name into Swedish. With Tim Burton‘s first Batman film he also was called Batman here.
By the way, the huskies are only loud when standing. As soon as they start running they quiet down.
The object of desire here are prototypes, since Lapland is a testing ground for the automotive sector. Cars test-driven here will only be launched several years from now. Such a photo brings a small fortune.
A small hint for Papparazzi: There are only two petrol stations here!
Twenty percent of all traffic accidents here in Sweden are caused by elks. They can weigh up to a ton and reach a height of two meters.”
All the large reindeer herds in Lapland are “half-wild.” They are often under the care of Lapland’s native inhabitants, the Sami.
“The last wild reindeer disappeared in Sweden in the early 19th century. Today all the reindeers are tame. They are private property. All reindeers have an owner.”
Church Town World Heritage
Gammelstad Church Town, a World Heritage site on the UNESCO’s list of places worth preserving, is located about 10 km outside the city of Luleå in Swedish Lapland.
A visit in the winter is something out of the ordinary. A placid, white world with snow covered roofs. Inside: open fires, simmering coffee and bread, oven-baked according to traditional trades.
Today there are 424 wooden houses, placed erratic and piecewise over time, making the entire village a clutter of ”smogen”, narrow ginnels cornered by grass in the summer, beaten paths through the deep snow in the winter.
When people visited, the church the town was bustling. When they left the cottages fell silent. Experience the same bustling. Or the same serene sanctity. Hundreds of years preserved, to feel and walk among. Time and history barely altered.
