Luleå is a city in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten.
Attractions: Luleå Cathedral, Norrbotten Theater, Norrbotten Museum, University, House of Technology, Gammelstad, the old center of the city.

As we have some spare hours left before our departure, we use these for a short walk through the center of Lulea. Lulea is about 110 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. The city lies at the northern end of the Baltic Sea in Swedish Lapland. In 1649, Lulea was newly founded at the present location and renamed the original town to Gammelstad. The reason for the relocation was the silting of the port due to the Scandinavian postglacial rebound.
In 1887, a great fire destroyed the city almost completely. Afterward one rebuilt the city with a regular ground plan and right-angled roads.
Lulea is an important administrative and service center, a Lutheran bishop's seat and seat of the northernmost technical university.
The most important industry is the steelworks SSAB Luleaverken, where we drove past on our Fat Bike Tour.
Also Facebook operates three server buildings with an area of 28,000 m² each. The cool climate and plenty of water nearby allow the operation with renewable energies. We have seen the premises on our return journey from Gammelstad.
We start our walk through the center of Lulea in the pedestrian zone. It is wide enough, so that a market takes place once a week. In this area, you find a lot of restaurants and shops for all necessities of life.
On the way to the cathedral we discover the beautiful street art painting, which we have already seen from the roof of our hotel.
The Lulea Cathedral is a Gothic Revival cruciform church, build in 1893. The interior has a modest design. Next to it is the seat of the bishopric, the Svenska Kyrkan Lulea Stift.
The weather is fine and some residents spend their lunch break in the adjacent city park, Stadsparken. Sometimes also small concerts take place here.
After crossing the park, we arrive at the city hall of Lulea, the Stadshuset.
Modern architecture considerably stands out from the beautiful brick buildings round the cathedral. Especially in the Storgatan and the Köpmangatan we see beautiful old buildings.
There are only a few steps to the Lulea Bay. So we decide to spend the remaining time until the departure here and to enjoy the beautiful view.

Vor unserer Abreise haben wir noch ein paar Stunden Zeit und nutzen diese für einen kurzen Rundgang im Zentrum von Lulea.
Lulea liegt etwa 110 Kilometer südlich des Polarkreises am nördlichen Ende der Ostsee in Schwedisch Lappland. Lulea wurde 1649 an der heutigen Stelle neu gegründet, und die ursprüngliche Stadt in Gammelstad umbenannt. Grund für die Verlegung war die Verlandung des Hafens durch die skandinavische Landhebung.
1887 zerstörte ein Großbrand die Stadt fast vollständig. Daraufhin wurde die Stadt mit regelmäßigem Grundriss und rechtwinkelig verlaufenden Straßen wieder aufgebaut.
Lulea ist ein wichtiges Verwaltungs- und Dienstleistungszentrum, lutherischer Bischofssitz und Sitz der nördlichsten technischen Universität.
Wichtigste Industrie ist das Stahlwerk SSAB Luleaverken, das wir bei unserer Fat Bike Tour bereits begutachten konnten.
Daneben betreibt Facebook hier drei Servergebäude mit einer Fläche von jeweils 28.000 m². Das kühle Klima und viel Wasser in der Nähe erlauben den Betrieb ausschließlich mit erneuerbaren Energien. Auch dieses Gelände haben wir bereits auf der Rückfahrt von Gammelstad bereits kennengelernt.
Wir beginnen unseren Stadtrundgang in der Fußgängerzone. Sie ist sehr breit gestaltet, so dass einmal wöchentlich hier auch ein Markt abgehalten werden kann. Geschäfte für alles Lebensnotwendige und Restaurants sind hier angesiedelt.
Auf dem Weg zum Dom treffen wir auf ein wunderschönes Street Art Gemälde, das wir bereits von Dach unseres Hotels aus gesehen haben.
Der Dom zu Lulea ist eine neugotische Kreuzkirche, erbaut 1893, die im Inneren relativ schlicht gestaltet ist. Gleich daneben befindet sich der Sitz des Bistums, das Svenska Kyrkan Lulea Stift.
Bei dem schönem Wetter verbringen einige Bewohner ihre Mittagspause im angrenzenden Stadtpark, Stadsparken. Hier finden manchmal auch kleine Konzerte statt.
Nachdem wir den Park durchquert haben treffen wir auf das Rathaus, Stadshuset, von Lulea.
Die moderne Architektur setzt sich deutlich ab von den teils schön verzierten Ziegelbauten rund um den Dom. Vor allem in der Storgatan und der Köpmangatan treffen wir auf wunderschöne alte Gebäude.
Es sind nur wenige Schritte zur Lulea Bay und wir beschließen die restliche Zeit bis zur Abfahrt hier zu verbringen und den schönen Ausblick zu genießen.

Gammelstad Church Town, summertime, Luleå
Gammelstad Church Town is located about 10 km outside the city of Luleå in Swedish Lapland.
During summer there are lots of things to see and do. Experience the world heritage while on a guided tour, visit our Open-Air museum, eat dinner at one of the restaurants, buy local handicrafts in one of the stores. All while the 500-year old tradition of staying overnight in the cottages continue.

Friends and Fatbikes in Lulea - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
During our stay in Northern Europe, we visited a travel blogger conference in Stockholm. On this occasion, Visit Lulea and Swedish Lapland organized a multi-day excursion to the north of Sweden, to Lulea. Lulea is approx. 110 km south of the northern polar circle at the muzzle of the Lule to the Gulf of Bothnia. The municipality of Lulea has about 78,000 inhabitants.
After a short tour around Lulea and the check-in at the Clarion Hotel Sense, we should strengthen ourselves with some food. The Friends Fika and Food restaurant lies in the pedestrian zone and has its own bakery. A nice place for a coffee or a lunch break during shopping or a stroll through the city.
Here we have the chance to learn more about the members of our travel group and the travel guides for this day, Fredrik and Camilla.
After we have chosen our meal, we intensify the information exchange. Fredrik, one of the travel guides, sits at our table. He tells us about the Swedes and that at least half of the Swedes have a boat to explore the skerries or the archipelago. We then reply: the other half has a camping bus or caravan. Laughing, he agreed. Later he tells us that he also runs a lodge, the Aurora Safari Camp. He got the idea during his travels in Africa.
After the meal, which by the way tasted very good, we go to Ouroboros Lulea. They offer tours and bikes. But these are no ordinary bicycles but Fatbikes. Fatbikes are bicycles with a light frame and extra wide tires. Eric Schlemme and Susanne Törnlind, the two owners, expect us already.
After a short introduction, one adjusts the seats individually in the height and we are ready to go. Olov, a savvy cyclist, as well as Eric and Susanne accompany us. First, we ride on a trail through a park to get the right feeling for the fat bikes. After a short time, we we arrive at the skatepark where Olov shows us a few of his tricks.
In the further course, we pass by the steelworks in Lulea and get a little idea of the importance of the steel industry and ore mining in Sweden.

Während unseres Aufenthalts in Nord Europa besuchten wir eine Travel Blogger Konferenz in Stockholm. In deren Rahmen organisierte Visit Lulea und Swedish Lapland einen mehrtägigen Ausflug in den Norden Schwedens, nach Lulea.
Lulea liegt ca. 110 km südlich des nördlichen Polarkreises an der Mündung des Lule in den Bottnischen Meerbusen. Die Gemeinde Lulea umfasst ca. 78.000 Einwohner.
Nach einer kurzen Rundfahrt durch den Ort und dem Check in im Clarion Hotel Sense sollen wir uns erst einmal stärken. Das Restaurant Friends Fika and Food liegt direkt in der Fußgängerzone und hat auch eigene Bäckerei. Es ist der ideale Ort für eine Kaffeepause oder ein Mittagessen während der Einkäufe oder einem Spaziergang durch die Stadt.
Hier können wir die Mitglieder unserer Reisegruppe und die Reiseführer, Fredrik und Camilla, die uns hier vor Ort begleiten werden, besser kennenlernen.
Nachdem wir ein Essen gewählt haben, wird der Informationsaustausch intensiviert. Mit am Tisch sitzt Fredrik, einer der Reiseführer. Er erzählt uns von den Schweden und dass mindestens die Hälfte der Schweden ein Boot besitzt um die Schären oder die Archipele zu erkunden. Darauf antworten wir: die andere Hälfte besitzt dann einen Campingbus oder Wohnwagen. Lachend stimmte er uns zu. Später erzählt er uns, dass er auch eine Lodge betreibt, das Aurora Safari Camp. Die Idee hierzu war ihm bei seinen Reisen in Afrika gekommen.
Nach dem Essen, das übrigens sehr gut schmeckte, geht es zu Ouroboros, die Touren und Bikes anbieten. Keine gewöhnlichen Fahrräder sondern Fatbikes, Das sind Fahrräder mit leichtem Rahmen und extra breiten Reifen. Eric Schlemme und Susanne Törnlind, die beiden Besitzer, erwarten uns bereits.
Wir bekommen eine kurze Einführung von Eric, dann werden rasch die Sitze in der Höhe individuell eingestellt und schon geht es los. Olov, ein versierter Radkünstler, sowie Eric und Susanne begleiten uns.
Zuerst fahren wir auf einem Wanderweg durch einen Park um ein Gefühl für die Räder zu entwickeln. Nach kurzer Zeit treffen wir auf einen Skatepark, wo uns Olov ein paar seiner Übungen zeigt.
Im weiteren Verlauf passieren wir das Stahlwerk in Lulea und bekommen einen kleinen Eindruck davon, welche Bedeutung die Stahlindustrie und der Erzabbau in Schweden hat.
