Sweden: Jokkmokk and the Arctic Circle - Swedish Lapland with kids
For more details head to the blog:
We headed up to Umea from Stockholm and just hung out for a bit but made time to rent a car and drive up to the little arctic city of Jokkmokk, just above the arctic circle in Swedish Lapland. The weather was a bit rainy but we had cozy accommodation in the Asgard Hostel in town. This part of Sweden has several national parks, is famous for hiking and trekking, and is hope to the Sami people who are semi nomadic reindeer herders. There are several great museums and visitor centers to explore but the real draw is the natural beauty of the area. Forests carpeted with blueberry bushes ready to be gathered; glacially carved lakes still as mirrors, and mountains beckoning the eager adventures. And the occasional fika, of course. Berries can be gathered by anyone and consumed on the fly, which we did with gusto. We started off our visit with a day trip to Stora Sjöfallet national park. In addition to a wonderful, modern visitor center, the nature here is incredible. After our hike, we even glimpsed a giant reindeer bull with massive antlers (massive to us anyway). On day 2, the weather did not cooperate but we spent several hours at the Attje Museum in Jokkmokk where we learned about the Sami Culture from history to contemporary times. It was really fascinating.
We headed back south on our third day (more rain) and stopped to pick up our official arctic circle certificate where we met a gregarious shop owner full of personality then on to Storforsen which is the longest cascade in Sweden and stunning. I hadn't seen anything like it, not so much the rushing water but the surrounding rock formations with mini canyons and water running everywhere.

There is this old saying: At the end of the road, the adventure begins.
On the outskirts of the ordinary, different tales will be told. Our lifestyle belongs to the place and people of the Arctic. Our story starts and continues at the end of the road.

Midnight sun over the Laponian area, Jokkmokk, Sweden
Midnight sun over the Laponian area near Jokkmokk and the Lule river. Jokkmokk or is located in Norrbotten County, just North of the arctic circle. The Sámi name Jåhkåmåhkke means River's Curve.
The world heritage site Laponia is a joining together of six large nature areas and reserves of which Muddus, Sarek, Stora Sjöfallets and Padjelanta are the best known. But it didn't happen just like that, a lot of thought went into it. After careful consideration a committee of wise elders came to the decision that this area had a unique cultural and natural character. Laponia was a fact, with the footnote that it was both a natural and cultural heritage site.

“Let’s start with the most important thing – it’s really cold here in Sweden. I mean really cold!! Not like when it’s really cold in Germany. Today it‘s minus 25 degrees celsius!”
Without transfer - there have been direct flights from Hanover, Hahn, Munich and Stuttgart to destinations in Northern Sweden for 15 years now.
“The flight to Arvidsjaur only takes 21/2 hours.”
In the summer months the sun never seems to set. In winter it only shows 3-5 hours before darkness returns.
During these months it doesn’t stay light for long in Lapland but you’ll be sure to see the Northern Lights.
This result of the interaction between the sun and the Earth’s magnetic fields is visible during 7 out of 10 nights – if the sky is clear!
“This is the Hornavarn, a lake here in Arjeplog. With a depth of 221 metres, it’s the deepest one in Sweden.
In Sweden, Batman used to be called Leather Cloth (= Läderlappen?). They simply translated the name into Swedish. With Tim Burton‘s first Batman film he also was called Batman here.
By the way, the huskies are only loud when standing. As soon as they start running they quiet down.
The object of desire here are prototypes, since Lapland is a testing ground for the automotive sector. Cars test-driven here will only be launched several years from now. Such a photo brings a small fortune.
A small hint for Papparazzi: There are only two petrol stations here!
Twenty percent of all traffic accidents here in Sweden are caused by elks. They can weigh up to a ton and reach a height of two meters.”
All the large reindeer herds in Lapland are “half-wild.” They are often under the care of Lapland’s native inhabitants, the Sami.
“The last wild reindeer disappeared in Sweden in the early 19th century. Today all the reindeers are tame. They are private property. All reindeers have an owner.”

Sweden: Visit to Birka Viking Village - A Living History Museum
While Melynda took the day to go hike, the Henry and the boys took a boat tour to the viking village of Birka outside Stockholm. The weather was rainy but with a few glimpses of sun and there was of course easy access to fika. The boys really got a lot out of the museum and guided tour in English and they really enjoyed their own mock battle at the walls. Henry liked the recreated viking village and long boats.

Summer in Swedish Lapland! travelwriter.nl
Nature is unspoilt here. Thanks to the arctic climate you will find high mountains and deep forests. You will encounter herds of reindeer and - with a bit of luck - some moose. Nature lends itself to long hikes, mountain bike rides or canoe trips. I'm talking about Swedish Lapland in summer! Because why would you explore this northern part of Europe only in the winter?
