Cercedilla is a municipality of the autonomous community of Madrid in central Spain. It is located in the Sierra de Guadarrama. It was the hometown of Francisco Fernández Ochoa , an alpine ski racer known for being the first Spaniard to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics. He won the slalom in 1972 in Japan. Less than two weeks before his death from cancer, a statue was erected in his honor in Cercedilla.Many of his siblings were also on the national ski team; his sister Blanca won an Olympic bronze medal in 1992 in France.

The Royal Palace of Aranjuez is a former Spanish royal residence. It is located 50km south of Madrid in the town of Aranjuez. It was established around the time Philip II of Spain moved the capital from Toledo to Madrid. Aranjuez became one of four seasonal seats of government, occupied during the springtime . Thereafter, the court moved successively to Rascafría, El Escorial and wintered in Madrid. The Valle de los Caídos is a Catholic basilica and a monumental memorial in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, erected at Cuelgamuros Valley in the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid, conceived by Francisco Franco to honour and bury those who died in the Spanish Civil War. Franco claimed that the monument was meant to be a national act of atonement and reconciliation. The Valley of the Fallen, as a surviving monument of Franco's rule, and its Catholic basilica remain controversial, in part since 10% of the construction workforce consisted of convicts, who voluntarily, in exchange for a reduction of sentence, decided to collaborate. EPIC HIKE IN THE MOUNTAINS NEAR MADRID - Cercedilla // Drone Footage

Madrid is, like all modern capital cities of the world, a busy town. Cars, people and metros can get a bit much to even the slickest of city slickers. When the crowds get too much we love to go out to Cercedilla (a short hour by train) to hike and drink in the nature.

We have been really busy these past few weeks so we had to delve into our memory box to pull out this short hiking video. This was one of our first videos and gave us the inspiration to make a YouTube channel! So we hope you enjoy this Thursday Throwback.

Head here by bus from Madrid and enjoy this medieval city with it's medieval castles, lakes and mountain views. I really felt like I was in the medieval times here.
