Hidden Places - Isar valley south of Munich
Wilma brought me from Barrydale to Cape Town airport. Arrived at Istanbul early morning and left two hours later. Great aerial views of Europe's largest metropolitan agglomeration. Managed to drive a rented Citroen DS3 from Munich airport to Wolfratshausen were I was warmly received by my next younger brother's family. Sunny days followed and I had time to walk down memory lane: Ascholding, Irschenhausen, Ebenhausen and Isar Valley towards Deining. Finally visited my father who could celebrate his 88th birthday in good health on July 15 and my mother's grave in Iffeldorf.
Dronie Chiemsee Lake - Germany
For the great family farewell we made this dronie from the shore of Lake Chiemsee in Germany, a great afternoon where we could see the peaks of the Alps that later we would cross towards Austria.
Enjoy it!!!

Entry from: Füssen, Germany
Entry Title: Bavarian Castles
Entry:
Another long day, but a good one. Decided to head out of Munich and see one of the sights nearby. I noticed this place's location before I left on this trip, and turned out there was information on it when I got to the hostel. Apparently it's a holiday here today as well called May Day so things were likely going to be closed in town. Perfect time for a daytrip then. So I jumped on a train this morning and made my way off to Neuschwanstein Castle near the Alps! It was a nice slow, two hour train ride to a little place called Füssen, somewhere south of Munich, I'm guessing south-west, then a five minute bus ride up to the castle. I have seen so many pictures of this place, as I am sure most people have at some point. It's probably one of the most famous castles in Germany. As we approached from below, it didn't really seem as huge as I thought it would be (postcards and calendars are kind of misleading). It just seemed so inconspicuous. Not as high as I would have imagined, and it was about a half hour walk from the many parking lots to the top. Still quite an amazing sight as you could tell from the throngs and throngs of people coming by trains, buses, and cars in all directions. It was a decent day too, with one or two sun showers and threatening clouds all day, but generally perfect weather. I didn't actually go into the castle as it was ridiculously overpriced and just a blatant cash grab by the Germans as the only way to get in is by paying the €9 and being escorted around by a guide for a very short period of time. It was amazing from the outside so I don't think I really missed out on anything. There was one thing that bugged me the whole time though, and that was where did those photographers have to climb to to take their postcard pictures? Seriously? It took me a few hours, and a few shopkeepers who didn't speak ensligh to finally find out that you can't get to that viewpoint. It was way up and beyond and not feasible for the random daytripper. At least I was finally satisfied with this. As long as no one else was getting that killer view I was happy ;) I got some good shots though of the snowy mountain tops, a waterfall below the castle and the surrounding green and lakes. It was an absolutely gorgeous area there. Nestled in some gaps in the mountains in the middle of Bavaria. There was also a second castle called Hohenswangau if I remembered to spell is correctly, situated below Neuschwanstein and next to the little makeshift town of tourist shops, beer gardens, hotels, and restaurants. It was great for a few hours just hiking around, breathing the fresh air, and taking lots of pictures (which I will get up hopefully in the next few days when I can find a proper computer). After I was finished at the castles I took the bus back down to the main town where I had gotten the train to, Fussen, and just wandered around there for an hour before I headed back to Munich. Let me tell you, this little town was absolutely gorgeous! You could have just spent a day there, yet at the same time, I think you could just spend a day anywhere in Southern Germany as long as the sun was out and there was a beer garden within reach. But honestly, this town was great. It was on a big milky green coloured river, had a huge old castle at it's center, lots of patios on the streets full of people enjoying today's holiday having a beer and eating ice cream. There were kids games set up in the streets like blow-up bouncing areas, trampolines, there was a group of men playing a saxophone, trombone, drums, tuba, and singing songs down another direction. It was great. You could have spent the whole day just wandering around this town nevermind the major attraction 5km down the road. Then it was back to Munich where I've now packed up my stuff as best I can for leaving tomorrow morning. Off to Salzburg, which I think I will like very much. I had a friend there ...
