Introduction:
Hey everybody and welcome back to another episode of Triple P with me Surya Sridhar. Now guys when I say Munich most probably you are thinking fancy-schmancy, Oktoberfest, the beer halls, pretzel. But guess what, there is another association which a lot of us don’t know about. Which I didn’t know about either by the way. STREET ART! Now guys in the 1980’s there was a Street Art/Graffiti wave that came in from New York and guess who rode that wave first. It was not Berlin. It was not Hamburg. But it was Munich! I know. I was super surprised by that too. They were the pioneers of street art and graffiti in Germany and also in Europe! So there have to be some great places that we can explore right? We’re going to go check out 4 of them. Let’s go!
1:
Alright guys first of all I’m loving the fact that it is sunny in February in Munich. Oh my god I love the weather. I’m so glad I came out today. So guys we have come to our first stop in the street art tour. We’re at the corner of Tumblingerstrasse and Ruperstrasse and it is called the “Alter schlachthof”. Now this part is super amazing and it is great for street artists because it is legal to do graffiti here. Basically the Munich government supports it which means creativity can reign free. So let’s go check it out!
2:
Alright guys we’ve come to our second spot in the tour. Now we’re at the Kulturfabrik in Ostbahnhof. It is very easy to reach here. You can come by tram, you can come by the S Bahn or U Bahn, you can even come by bus. Now this place is super interesting. I’ve never known about this before. It changes its personality during the day to night. So during the day it welcomes a lot of climbers and that is because, and a new fact I didn’t know, Munich is home to the biggest climbing gym in Europe! So a lot of sports enthusiasts come here during the day. At night it changes into a very hot and happening club scene. So very funky place. Let’s go check it out!
3:
Alright guys we’ve come to our third spot: The Brudermühlbrücke. Now I was doing a little bit of research about this last night, because honestly this is all super new to me and super fascinating. Since the year 1996, every year, once a year, street artists are asked to come and change the look of this place. So it is legal, it is allowed and supported by the government. Now last year, Cemnoz was asked to inaugurate the 22nd year mural and he didn’t just do this by himself but he also invited 22 other very famous artists from around the world. So New York, Berlin, Switzerland, Rotterdam. From many other places, to come and join him. Now one of the other names you should know about especially in the Munich scene is Loomit, Now he was the first guy who sort of became big in the international scene and also in the local scene in Munich. He spray-painted the Geltendorf Train and while at first it was completely frowned upon, he was fined, he had to do community service, over time people actually started to acknowledge his work and very surprisingly even the governor of Munich asked him to come and spray paint parts of his house. That’s just really fascinating! Now let’s go check out this awesome place.
4:
Okay guys we’ve at our last stop in the street art/graffiti tour of Munich. We’re standing right now underneath the Angel of Peace monument which in German is “Friedensengel”. Now throwing a little bit of history knowledge at you. It was built in 1891 by Jacob Möhl to commemorate the 25 years of peace after the Franco-Prussian War. And guys, underneath this monument you will find a very interesting alley/tunnel with fascinating street art. I think this is definitely one of my favourite places to come to. It is so vibrant and I love the colors that they’ve used. Some of the top street artists have featured their work including Loomit, The Flying Brothers and Flinn. And what is so fascinating about this is that it is structured and organized into 4 different parts and due to the lighting it has a very nice art gallery feel. A very nice vibe and ambience. So let’s go check it out.
Conclusion:
Alright folks that takes us to the end of the video. I really hope you enjoyed it. I definitely did. I learnt a lot about the city that I live in. Yup, that happens! Now guys if you did enjoy it, please hit the thumbs up button, the subscribe button and of course, share with your friends. Also leave me a comment below on what you thought. From Füssen back to Munich
View of the fields passed along the way from the day I went to the Neuschwanstein Castle near Füssen, in Bavaria, Germany, 9/17/2009. The trains in Germany were so smooth and quiet!! A lot of it, as well as part of the scenery and all the bicycles parked at the train stations reminded me of Japan.
