Italian war memorial on Primasole Bridge

The battle for Sicily lasted for nearly six weeks in July and August 1943. One of the best known battles is that of Primasole Bridge where this monument can be found.
The British attacked the bridge using the 1st Parachute Brigade, commanded by Brigadier Gerald Lathbury. They were equipped with six pounder anti tank guns pulled by jeeps landed by glider - this the first time that any artillery guns had ever been flown into combat.
The 1st Parachute Brigade was experienced having taken part in parachute attacks in North Africa.
Four drop zones were used by the paratroopers and two for the gliders, they were both north and south of the bridge to allow it to be attacked from both sides.
The relieving force would be from the British XIII Corps, commanded by Lieutenant-General Miles Dempsey. This meant an advance of 40km, mainly on foot, in temperatures approaching 40C. Opposition was from the Italian version of the Home Guard but who often did not have weapons. However the German 1st Fallschirmjäger Division, was being moved to Sicily from France, and was prepared to parachute in if required. The 1st Fallschirmjäger Machine Gun Battalion commanded by Major Werner Schmidt had landed at Catania during an Allied air raid early on 13 July. Their aircraft and anti-tank guns were destroyed during the raid, so the battalion left on foot for Primosole Bridge. When Schmidt informed the divisional commander of his intentions, he was warned to expect a sea or airborne landing that night. If the Allies landed to the rear of the Fallschirmjäger division, Schmidt's battalion had to hold Primosole Bridge. The machine gun battalion started to dig in and prepare a defence around 2km to the south of the bridge.
The Primosole Bridge was built from steel girders, had a span of 120 m, 2.4m from the river. The land to the north of the bridge was mainly olive and almond groves. To the south of the bridge is the Gornalunga canal. Four pillbox bunkers had been constructed, two on the north bank and two on the south bank.
Unfortunately the attacking force was shot at by Allied seaborne AA and then Axis AA. The confusion meant that the drop was scattered over a large area. However a small group managed to capture the bridge intact, being joined by more paratroopers to form a group of around 120 defenders. Only four gliders managed to land without too much damage, however they contained the anti-tank guns. The Fallschirmjäger Machine Gun Battalion managed to recapture two of the low hills to the south of the bridge in the morning. Artillery fire from British ships stopped the German advance. However the Germans were able to recapture the bridge by advancing from the north.
Despite the critical situation at the bridge, after capturing a bridge some 15km south of Primasole during the day, British troops stopped for the night near Lentini. Meanwhile the Germans reinforced their position on the Simeto river. The Durham LIght Infantry made a number of attempts to cross the river, eventually successfully capturing the bridge a second time, following failed German atttempts to blow it up.
However the Allies did not move on to Catania after the capture of Primosole Bridge. Due to German reinforcements in the area, Catania dd not fall until 5 August 1943. On 17 August 1943, Messina was captured ending the Sicily campaign.
Lessons were drawn and improvements made for future landings but there are many similiarities between this story and that of Arnhem.
The monument on the bridge shown here commemorates all dead from the battle. The battle for the bridge was fought in a chivalrous manner with cease fires to collect the wounded and both sides helping each other. Doctors working in field medical stations were informed that they were prisoners but allowed to continue treating the wounded. This was something rarely repeated in WW2.
