Carinthia Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Carinthia in Austria.
Carinthia is Austria’s southernmost region and borders both Italy and Slovenia. It’s located in the sunny heart of Europe with more than a thousand lakes, plus spectacular alpine regions and numerous Celtic Roman excavation sites, mediaeval castles, monasteries and cathedrals. In the eastern part of Carinthia and more than a thousand metres above sea level is one of the region’s oldest historical villages, the mountain village of Diex. In the fifteenth century the Turks invaded the area with great savagery thus, as protection, local farmers built castellated churches in which they sought sanctuary. Friesach, Carinthia’s oldest city, has retained what must be the true ambience of the Middle Ages, with a fortified princely estate and churches and monasteries that are surrounded by sturdy walls and a moat. The Maria Saal Open Air Museum is situated in the heart of Carinthia. In this richly cultural and historic area various traditional farm buildings from all over Carinthia have been reconstructed. Klagenfurt is the administrative centre of Carinthia: a middle class garden city that does not contain the fine buildings of the aristocracy but has a good helping of southern flair and, due to the nearby Wörthersee, is a marvellous summer resort. The Maria Wörth Church is situated on a rock and is one of the most famous pilgrimage destinations in Austria. From the small cemetery that surrounds the church there’s a romantic view across the lake and nearby peninsula. Carinthia is a paradise of sun and ice, of nature, history and culture.

Wels, Oberösterreich - Austria HD Travel Channel
Wels is the second largest city in Upper Austria. The area around Wels has been settled since the Neolithic Age. Under the Romans, Wels developed into a city called Ovilava. Later, it became the capital of Ufernoricum, the province between the Danube and the main Alpine ridge, which arose from the division of Noricum by Emperor Diocletian.
In the course of the great migration, Wels was devastated strongly and gained some importance under the Bavarians in the 6th century. The Habsburgs followed the Babenberger and under Maximilian I. Wels came into the center of imperial interest,
because Maximilian maintained a hunting lodge in the Welser heath. Maximilian died in the castle of Wels in 1519. Today Wels is primarily known as a trade-fair city.
The most beautiful house in Wels is the house of Salmone Alt, also called Hoffmannsches Freihaus. Salmone Alt was the mistress of the Prince-Bishop of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich of Raitenau, and gave birth to 15 or 16 children. For her he built the Mirabell Palace in Salzburg.

Innsbruck royal palace, Austria
The Hofburg, Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs in Innsbruck, Austria is perhaps one of the three most significant cultural buildings in the country, along with the Hofburg Palace and Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. The Hofburg is the main building of a large residential complex once used by the Habsburgs that still includes the Noblewomen's Collegiate Foundation, the Silver Chapel, the Hofkirche containing Emperor Maximilian's cenotaph and the Schwarzen Mandern, the Theological University, the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, Innsbruck Cathedral, the Congress, and the Hofgarten (Court Garden).
The original Hofburg palace was constructed from several elements under Archduke Sigismund around 1460. This structure included sections of medieval fortifications that ran along the eastern city wall. The building incorporated the Rumer Gate, which was later converted into the Heraldic Tower in 1499 by Jörg Kölderer under Emperor Maximilian I. The palace was expanded several times during the next 250 years. Between 1754 and 1773, the Hofburg palace underwent two stages of Baroque structural changes under Empress Maria Theresia: the south tract was constructed (1754–1756) on the Hofgasse according to plans by J. M. Gumpp the Younger, and the main façade was added (1766–1773) on the Rennweg according to plans by C. J. Walter. During this period, the Giants' Hall was completed with ceiling frescoes by F. A. Maulbertsch, and the Imperial Chapel was built (1765) in the room where Maria Theresa's husband Emperor Francis I had died.
Today, the Hofburg contains five themed museum areas: Maria Theresa's Rooms from the eighteenth century, Empress Elisabeth's Apartment from the nineteenth century, a Furniture Museum, an Ancestral Gallery, and a Painting Gallery. These themed museum areas illustrate various aspects of the political and cultural history of the former imperial palace, which remained in the possession of the Habsburgs for more than 450 years.
