Brussels, Belgium Travel Guide - Must-See Attractions
Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the de facto capital of the European Union (EU). It is also the largest urban area in Belgium, comprising 19 municipalities, including the municipality of the City of Brussels, which is the de jure capital of Belgium, in addition to the seat of the French Community of Belgium and of the Flemish Community.
The most important places to visit in Brussels: The Atomium (amongst the world's most fascinating buildings, represents a cell of iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. You can even take a walk inside), Manneken Pis (simply put, a statue of a boy urinating. No one expected a famous Brussels landmark. Often it's adorned with costumes), Royal greenhouses (built all the way back in 1873, it's a massive complex of greenhouse domes and galleries that showcase many rare plants and flowers), Royal Palace (currently the offices of Belgian monarchy, this present structure was constructed in the 19th century), Grand Palace (spend an evening in Europe's most beautiful square. Few other places in the world can match its architectural splendor) and many more.

MOVED TO TEARS IN ANTWERP, BELGIUM (LONELY PLANET BEST IN TRAVEL 2018) | Eileen Aldis
Antwerp, Belgium has been named one of Lonely Planet's top 10 cities for Best In Travel 2018. After visiting this historic Belgian city, Marc and I aren't surprised at all. When we decided to go there, we didn't know what to expect and were taken by surprise. We thought Antwerp had a lot to offer and wished we had more time there. The people were friendly, the buildings beautiful, and the food delicious. We started our day exploring at the oldest house in Antwerp -
now a protected monument - when we realized it was right around the corner from our Airbnb. It was built around 1480 and has survived six wars and more than five hundred years. Next we dipped into a vintage store called Riot because I have a weakness for thrift shopping and was on the hunt for a warm winter coat. After that we walked to Grote Markt (the main square) where you find the town hall and a statue of local hero, Brabo. The story goes that long ago there was a giant named Antigoon who stopped all boatmen on the Scheldt River to demand a toll. Anyone who resisted had their hand cut off and thrown in the river. A young man named Brabo killed Antigoon and cut off his hand and threw it in the river. This is how Antwerp got its name. In Dutch it's called Antwerpen from 'hand werpen' which means hand throw. We strolled along to Het Steen which is a castle and also the oldest building in Antwerp. It's located right on the Scheldt River and we found a plaque commemorating Canadian soldiers who had fought to protect Antwerp and its harbour during World War II. Standing there thinking about the connection between Canada and Belgium and all the lives lost I was really moved. Antwerp is well known for its diamond industry. It has a large diamond district (known as the Diamond Quarter) where most of the world's diamonds pass through annually: billions and billions of bling. We ended the day with - what else? - Belgian fries. NOT French fries. The local specialty is stoofvlees which is a beef stew on top of fries with mayonnaise. It was delicious and I intend to eat as many fries as possible in Belgium! Hope you enjoy this tour around Antwerp!

TESTING BELGIUM TREATS | BELGIAN FOOD | BEST PLACE IN BELGIUM
We are on the beach of Ostend, Belgium for an Ostend weekend. It is one of the best places to visit Belgium. Belgian food is amazing. There are so many Belgium treats, chocolate and snacks from Belgium to taste. After being in India for 2 months we're dying to try some of their most popular foods. We've got some super Belgian dishes lined up. What could possibly go wrong. Theodora’s family have a place in Ostend and we love going there. Oostende is especially for a beach walk in Oostende, also known as The Queen of Belgian sea-side resorts. Belgie Oostende “Stad aan zee.”

Antwerp (Belgium) is known as the ''Diamond Capital of the World''. Visit Antwerp!
Antwerp (Dutch: Antwerpen) is a major destination in Belgium in the region of Flanders. It is renowned for being the world's leading diamond city and more than 70% of all diamonds are traded there. The Diamond Market is the hub of the economic section in Belgium. More than 85% of the world’s rough diamonds, 50% of cut diamonds, and 40% of industrial diamonds are traded in the city.
Antwerp is the second largest city of Belgium. It has a beautiful historic city center, and is world-renowned for its fashion industry. The port of Antwerp is the second largest in Europe, and a major economic player in Belgium.
According to folklore, notably celebrated by a statue in front of the town hall, the city got its name from a legend about a giant called Antigoon who lived near the Scheldt river. He exacted a toll from passing boatmen, and for those who refused, he severed one of their hands and threw it into the river. Eventually, the giant was killed by a young hero named Silvius Brabo, who cut off the giant's own hand and flung it into the river. Hence the name Antwerpen, from Dutch hand werpen, akin to Old English hand and wearpan (to throw), which has evolved to today's warp.

13. Cartoon Culture
Belgium has a consuming passion for comic strips, which are considered the 'Ninth Art'. Foreigners might know the boy-reporter Tintin whose creater, Hergé, is celebrated at a fine new museum in Louvain La neuve.
12. Art nouveau
Swirls, curlicues and architectural daring: don't leave Brussels without exploring some of its art nouveau marvels. The style was developed with the help of the architects Victor Horta and Henry van de Velde.
11. Flanders Fields
Flanders Fields is a common English name of the World War I battlefields in an area straddling the Belgian provinces of West Flanders and East Flanders. The name Flanders Fields is particularly associated with battles that took place in the Ypres Salient, including the Second Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Passchendaele.
10. Belfries & Begijnhoven
The Belfries of Belgium is a group of historical buildings designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, in recognition of an architectural manifestation of emerging civic independence in historic Flanders and neighbouring regions from feudal and religious influences, leading to a degree of local democracy of great significance in the history of humankind.
9. Chocolate
Belgium is famed for its high quality chocolate and over 2,000 chocolatiers, both small and large. Belgium's association with chocolate goes back as far as 1635 when the country was under Spanish occupation. From the early 20th century, the country was able to import large quantities of cocoa from its African colony, the Belgian Congo.
8. Castles
From French-style chateaux to Crusader-era ruins, Belgium is overloaded with spectacular castles. Antwerp and Ghent both retain medieval ones right in their city centres. And Namur, like Huy and Dinant, is dominated by a massive fortress citadel that retained military importance well into the 20th century.
7. Antwerp Art & Fashion
Go-ahead Antwerp is a city that has everything. its skyline is still dominated by one of the lowlands' most magnificent stone steeples and its medieval house-museums are stuffed with works by its most famous 17th-century resident, Pieter Paul rubens. But it's a dynamic place with state-of-the-art museums, vibrant nightlife and a reputation as one of europe's capitals of haute couture.
6. Art Cities
If you love the medieval charm of Bruges but want to be a little more original, a great choice is Gghent. this historic city also has its share of canalside splendour, a great arts scene and a grittier charm that many visitors find refreshing. Or try Mechelen. it's overloaded with splendid churches and the grand central square is graced with a fanciful town-hall complex that's only topped for sheer flamboyance by the statue-festooned equivalent in Leuven, Belgium'''s ancient university city.
5. Carnival Capers
If your neighbours' idea of a good time is to dress up in barrel costumes jingling with little bells, don spooky masks and ostrich feather hats, and then go throwing oranges at passers-by, you might wonder about their sanity. then again you might just be living in Binche. That's the town whose unique mardi gras carnival has long been so indulgent it gave the english language the term 'binge'.
4. Belgian Beer
For a comparatively small country, Belgium produces a very large number of beers in a range of different styles -- in fact, it has more distinct types of beer per capita than anywhere else in the world. In 2011, there were 1,132 different varieties of beer being produced in the country.
3. Flemish Primitives
The whole of western representational art was transformed in the 15th century by a group of Bruges-based painters whose mastery of oil paints allowed them to simulate reality and paint faces that expressed apparently real emotions. Simultaneously, the burgeoning economy of Flanders meant that rich sponsors were prepared to commission secular works.
2. Brussels' Grand Place
The Grand Place is the central square of Brussels. It is surrounded by guildhalls, the city's Town Hall, and the Breadhouse. The square is the most important tourist destination and most memorable landmark in Brussels. It measures 68 by 110 metres (223 by 361 ft), and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
1. Bruges
Bruges is a picture-postcard-perfect city in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. Relatively cosmopolitan and bourgeois given its compact size, it is one of the best preserved pre-motorised cities in Europe and offers the kind of charms rarely available other than in Europe.

Brussels - Belgium Travel guide
Shopping in Brussels runs the whole gamut from high-end boutiques to markets.
Key areas:
A classic Brussels souvenir is chocolate. Fresh creamy pralines are for sale at Wittamer, Place du Grand Sablon. Another name to look out for is the top-quality Neuhaus, with several branches including one at Grand-Place 27.
Belgian biscuits are another gift guaranteed to bring a guilty smile to the receiver. Dandoy, rue au Beurre 31, produce melt-in-your-mouth macaroons and the Brussels speciality speculoos - a gingerbread biscuit with a crunch. Beer Mania, Chaussée de Wavre 174, stocks over 400 types of Belgian beer and glasses to suit.
Designer clothes shops and upmarket high-street stores are clustered around the smart avenue Louise and avenue de la Toison d'Or. Key shopping stops on avenue Louise include Caroline Biss, one of several fashion boutiques at number 21, for down-to-earth daywear in muted tones, and Les Enfants d'Edouard, at number 175, for vintage finds.
Children and adults' tastes alike are met at the many comic book shops in Brussels. Among these is centrally located La Boutique Tintin, rue de la Colline 13. Brussels lace is for sale at F Rubbrecht, Grand-Place 23, or at the city's largest lace maker, Manufacture Belge de Dentelle, Galerie de la Reine 6-8. Most of the souvenir lace shops around Grand-Place are less authentic.
Markets:
Every day is market day in Brussels. Among the best is the flower market, Tuesday to Sunday at Grand-Place, also the site of the Sunday morning bird market. Antiques are sold at the market on Place du Grand Sablon, Saturday and Sunday morning, while the flea market at Place du Jeu de Balle, in the Marolles district, is open every morning.
Shopping centres:
Chain stores dominate along the Rue Neuve, but more interesting fare can be found in the area between the Rue de Midi and the Grand-Place. A highlight is Galeries St Hubert, a cool and elegant arcade dating from the 1840s, which is now home to many designer shops.
Opening hours:
Standard shopping hours in Brussels are 1000-1800/1900 but the Grand-Place area stays open until approximately 2000. Most shops are closed on Sundays, except for a handful of markets and those stores around Grand-Place.
Souvenirs:
Souvenirs to look out for include chocolate (pralines and truffles are the most popular), biscuits, beer (look out for Leffe, Chimay, all brands of kriek, and Duvel), lacework and Tintin memorabilia.
Tax information:
Sales tax in Brussels is 21% and can be refunded to non-EU citizens by any of the shops affiliated to Global Refund. Participating shops will issue a global refund cheque, which should be stamped at customs.
