Gran Canaria is the second most populous island of Canary Island. Located in the Atlantic Ocean about 150 kilometers off the northwestern coast of Africa. Gran Canaria is located southeast of Tenerife and west of Fuerteventura. The island is of volcanic origin, mostly made of fissure vents.
Gran Canaria is the perfect island on which to spend your holiday. A multi-faceted destination, you can enjoy many features you normally wouldn't find in such a small area.
The capital city of Las Palmas, in the north, is the largest city in the Canary Islands and represents an interesting alternative for tourists who can sight-see, spend a day shopping or relax on its world famous beaches.
The greatest natural attraction of Gran Canaria is the climate, which makes it an ideal all year round holiday destination.
Gran Canaria is often referred to as a mini continent not only because of its being situated between 3 continents itself, Africa, Europe and the Americas, but also for its variations in weather, benefitting from the Gulf Stream and the nature of the landscapes around the island. The north is usually cooler than the sometimes fiery heat of the south. Inner regions, being mountainous, can be cloudier and colder with more rain.
The Island of Gran Canaria is situated in the centre of the Canary Islands Archipelago between Tenerife and Fuerteventura. Year-round, spring-like conditions with average monthly temperatures ranging from 18°C in January to 25°C in August make Gran Canaria an ideal destination for both Winter Breaks and Summer Holidays.
Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands (after Tenerife and Fuerteventura), but despite it's small size, the island is often described as being like a Continent in Miniature. The Dry South contrasts with the Green Pine Forests of the Mountainous interior and it is not unusual for there to be snow on the peaks while Holidaymakers are sunbathing on the beaches below.
The beaches at Maspalomas are amongst the best in the islands and resort of Playa de Ingles offers some very lively nightlife. If you don't want to spend your nights in a Disco Bar and your days on the Beach, Gran Canaria also offers excellent golfing with 6 Golf Courses and a long tradition of the sport on the island.
The island's capital, Las Palmas, dates back to the 15th century and with a population of nearly 400,000 is by far the biggest city in the islands. The colonial architecture, shopping, bars and restaurants make this city well worth a visit.
Gran Canaria is the best known Island, but it is only the 3rd biggest, after Tenerife and Fuerteventura. It was on Gran Canaria the big Tourist Adventure began, first in Las Palmas, but later on most of the Tourism moved South to places, where the Sun could be counted on.
Tourism has taken over in the Neon lit Cities, bur frankly, The Island is pretty Beautiful, and when leaving Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico behind, you'll find, that Gran Canaria is much more than the Tourist Cities by the Coast. Take a trip in the Mountains to the Idyllic Villages, with Palm Trees, tall Mountains, gigantic Pine Trees, Volcano Craters and Whitewashed Houses in Villages between Almond Trees.
Here Christmas Flowers and Bougainvilleas grow as big bushes, and Clematis climbs the Walls, and where Fig Cactus and Agaves stands side by side. Or you can take a Trip along the steep West Coast, or a Trip to the middle of the Island, 1949 m above Sea level.
If you have a 2 Week Vacation -- or more, it could be an adventure to visit one of the other Canary Islands, and Ferries and Planes are leaving to the other Islands on a daily basis from Las Palmas and Agaete. When leaving in the morning, it is possible to be back the same Day -- but you can find opportunities to stay the Night, direct from the Street. The smaller Islands are not so stamped by Tourists, so the possibilities of a different Vacation than you will find on one of the bigger Islands are great. Tickets to the other Islands are not expensive, so this type of Vacation is cheap.

Travel Guide to Canary Islands
Shepherd Entertainment gives you the history of Tejeda in the Canary Islands and takes you on a tour of the local architecture.
Steep serpentines broken with hairpin bands lean up to the nearly 2000 meter high peak of the island. We have to clamber to heights of 600 to 800 meters even near the coast. The view compensates us for the fatigue. Even a resting place for divers has been built at the most beautiful points. This scene is amazing. The mountain air is sharp and clear and the sky is sparkling blue. The steep rocks play in the different shades of yellow, brown, gray, red and black. In the cracks, the rocks, bushes with yellow flowers are in full bloom. Wild flowers and little palm trees grow in the lower part. Upper and the mountains, pine trees and evergreen bushes take over the power. However, several kinds of cactuses can also live here. We pass over little mountain villages and we can soon take a glimpse of the most interesting member of the fancifully scalloped rocks, the Bentaiga Monolith.
Santa Lucia, the little friendly mountain town is remarkable for the fact that this was the place where the Guanches and the Spanish joined battle with each other. The popular restaurant the Howe was born in the style of the local architecture. Everything which has been found of the personal belongings of the aborigines was exhibited here. Artificial lakes have been created in the valleys for storing valuable fresh water. Roque Nublo, the black monolith balancing above the precipice can easily be seen from the rest area and lookout tower next to the road. If we wound further along the road, we would reach the peak, Pico de las Nieves very soon.
It's not worth going on through, the most beautiful view waits for us in Crusta Tejera. The village was given its name after the old stone cross erected here. Teide, the peak of Tenerife, the highest mountain of spain which is snow covered all year long can also be seen in clear weather from the terrace of the restaurant.

Travel Guide to Canary Islands
Puerto Rico is located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, east of the Dominican Republic and west of both the United States
Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. Its visitors can enjoy the island's water sport such as surfing and fishing, discover the pleasure resort and the Palmitos Park, among other tourist attractions.
The protected bay of Puerto Rico is the training camp of the Spanish national sailing team as well at the home of beginner or advanced surfers and yachtsmen. It's a real water sport, fishing and diving center with a big yacht harbor and an artificially filled sand beach. The formerly barren steep rock walls are not even visible owing to the terraced hotels and apartments creeping up the mountains. The houses crowd in four or five lines between the water and the rocks. Like anywhere else on the island, building fever has grown to huge dimensions.
A self generating spiral of prosperity created by tourism can be seen everywhere. More money makes it possible to build hotels and new buildings, redecorate old ones, landscape the area and build roads. This attracts even more tourists who bring even more money and sell on who knows for how long. The pleasure resort built in the valley of Torito can be used by everyone but of course, mainly the guests of the four surrounding hotels go there. Like Loro Park on Tenerife, Palmitos Park strives to show plants, palms and cactuses as well as animal species native to the islands on Gran Canaria. In the 20 acre park, which was built in Barranco de Fataga canyon near Las Palomas, mainly the botanical garden is highlighted. 45 kinds of palms and 160 kinds of cactuses can be found here. There's also an orchid park and a butterfly farm. In the huge aquarium, 150 kinds of fish species swim. The sight is made even more colorful by 1200 birds.

EXPLORING GRAN CANARIA: Tour of historic center of TEROR (Spain)
SUBSCRIBE: - A walking tour of Teror, Gran Canaria, Spain. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Gran Canaria is one of Spain’s Canary Islands, off northwestern Africa. It's known for the white-sand beaches stretching along its southern coast, from happening Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico to quieter, family-oriented Puerto de Mogán and San Agustín. The northern capital, Las Palmas, is a popular stop for cruise ships and duty-free shopping, while the island’s interior is rural and mountainous.

Santa Lucía de Tirajana - Gran Canaria
Santa Lucia de Tirajana is a municipality located in the southeast of the island of Gran Canaria. One of Santa Lucia de Tirajana's remarks are the great amount of palm trees there are in its palm valley.
As it could not be any other way in Gran Canaria, Santa Lucia de Tirajana also has its own church that was built in 1898. I say so because there are usually churches in each town of Gran Canaria.
A very interesting place to visit is Fortaleza Grande and its museum. It is interesting because that was the last standing fortress where aboriginal people who did not want to convert to christianism fought against the Spanish empire. Since they were defeated and forced to christianism most of them suicided at Fortaleza Grande.
As for archaeological places to see, Santa Lucia de Tirajana has some of them. At Fortaleza de Ansite you can see how natives used to bury their people. The constructions are still there and you can see the diggins and stone shapes of their tombs.
Gran Canaria also has one of the top windsurfing spots of the world which is in Santa Lucia de Tirajana which is the beach Pozo Izquierdo. There are waves and wind all over the year and it is a great beach to practice and learn sports related with wind and waves, not just for windsurf but also kitesurf for instance.
