Quedlinburg is a town situated just north of the Harz mountains, in the district of Harz in the west of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
The town of Quedlinburg is known to have existed since at least the early 9th century, when there was a settlement known as Gross Orden on the eastern bank of the River Bode.
It was first mentioned as a town in 922 as part of a donation by King Henry the Fowler (Heinrich der Vogler).
The records of this donation were held by the abbey of Corvey.
Quedlinburg has a population of more than 24,000.
The town was the capital of the district of Quedlinburg until 2007, when the district was dissolved.
Several locations in the town are designated stops along a scenic holiday route, the Romanesque Road.
In the centre of the town, a wide selection of half-timbered buildings from at least five different centuries are to be found (including a 14th-century structure, one of Germany's oldest), while around the outer fringes of the old town are examples of Jugendstil buildings, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Since December 1994, the old town of Quedlinburg and the castle mount with the Stiftskirche (collegiate church) are listed as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.
Quedlinburg is one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance towns in Europe, having escaped major damage in World War II.
In 2006, the Selke valley branch of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways was extended to Quedlinburg from Gernrode, giving access to the historic steam narrow gauge railway, Alexisbad and the high Harz plateau.
The castle and Stifstkirche St. Servatius still dominate the town like in the early Middle Ages.
The church is a prime example of German Romanesque style.
The treasure of the church containing ancient Christian religious artifacts and books, was stolen by an American soldier but brought back to Quedlinburg in 1993 and is again on display here.
The former Stiftskirche St. Wiperti was established in 936 when the Kanonikerstift St. Wigpertus (of male canons) was moved from the castle hill to make way for what became Quedlinburg Abbey.
The church was built at the location of the first, Ottonian, Royal palace at Quedlinburg.
Around 1020, a three-aisled crypt was added to the basilica.
The crypt, which survived all later alterations to the church, today is also a designated stop on the Romanesque Road.

Unesco Weltkulturerbe Quedlinburg - world heritage town of Quedlinburg / Germany
Quedlinburgs architektonisches Erbe steht seit 1994 auf der UNESCO-Liste des Weltkulturerbes und macht die Stadt zu einem der größten Flächendenkmale in Deutschland. In der historischen Altstadt mit ihren kopfsteingepflasterten Straßen, verwinkelten Gassen und kleinen Plätzen befinden sich 1200 Fachwerkhäuser aus sechs Jahrhunderten. Am Markt liegt das Renaissance-Rathaus mit der Roland-Statue, südlich davon der Schlossberg mit der romanischen Stiftskirche und dem Domschatz als Zeugnisse des Quedlinburger Damenstifts. Auch der Münzenberg mit der romanischen Klosterkirche St. Marien und im Tal dazwischen die romanische St. Wiperti, der sich anschließende Abteigarten und der Brühl-Park gehören zum Weltkulturerbe.
Zur Zeit des Dritten Reiches wurde die Tausendjahrfeier (936--1936) des Todestages König Heinrichs I. von den Nationalsozialisten in Gestalt der SS als ein propagandistisches Geschenk angesehen. Heinrich Himmler entwickelte ab 1936 einen Kult um den König, dass er selbst als eine Reinkarnation Heinrichs angesehen wurde, was ihm geschmeichelt haben soll, wie sein Leibarzt Felix Kersten berichtet. In Quedlinburg wurden die Wipertikrypta und die Kirche St. Servatii beschlagnahmt und zu Weihestätten der SS umfunktioniert. Himmlers persönliches Erscheinen (bis 1939) zu den jährlichen Feierlichkeiten am 2. Juli, die bis 1944 stattfanden, wurde zum Beispiel 1937 propagandistisch mit Nachrichten über das Auffinden der verlorenen Gebeine Heinrichs I. aufgewertet.

Der Harz bietet wirklich schöne Wanderwege,Flora und Fauna.
Ein wirklich schöner Ort zum Erholen , Energie tanken!
Wir wandern in diesem Video durch ein Flussbett bis an einen Wanderweg der an einem Berg bis zu einem Wasserfall führt!
Auf dem Rückweg sahen wir das der Fluss wieder voll geflutet war
und wir wirklich Glück hatten das wir frühzeitig wieder aus dem Flussbett raus waren.
Also dieses Video ist nicht zur Nachahmung geeignet.
Für uns Stadtkinder aus Hannover war dieser Ausflug in die Natur wirklich unglaublich schön.Gerade auch weil der Harz relativ nah an Hannover liegt werden wir diesen Trip unbedingt wiederholen!

A really beautiful Place to relax and charge your soul.
We are tracking through an empty Riverbed,then we take a trail along a Mountain until we reached our Destination...a small Waterfall.
On our way back home we saw that the River was flooded,so we got a lot of luck that we had already passed the River.Otherwise it could have been very dangerous for us!!
This is a cool Natural Spot for us because we are from Hannover( a small grey city) and the Harz Mountain Range is not so far away.
So that´s why we love the Harz , and we are looking forward to come back to this beautiful Place.

The Quedlinburg castle complex, founded by King Henry and built up by Emperor Otto I in 936, was an imperial palatinate of the Saxon emperors. The palatinate, including the male convent, was in the valley, where today the Roman Catholic Church of St. Wiperti is situated, while the women's convent was located on the castle hill.
In 961 and 963, a canon's monastery was established in St. Wiperti, south of the castle hill. It was abandoned in the 16th century, and at one time the church, which boasts a magnificent crypt from the 10th century, was even used as a barn and a pigsty before being restored in the 1950s.
