Hillegom is a town and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality covers an area of 13.48 km2 of which 0.56 km2 is water. Hillegom is part of an area called the Duin- en Bollenstreek . As such, a large portion of the local economy was traditionally geared to the cultivation of bulb flowers. It is bordered by the municipalities of Bloemendaal, Bennebroek , Haarlemmermeer , Lisse , and Noordwijkerhout . The name Hillegom is derived from the abbey named Hijlighem . This abbey no longer exists. The current Lord of Hillegom is Jan Six X.

    The Zuiderzee Museum, located on Wierdijk in the historic center of Enkhuizen, is a Dutch museum devoted to preserving the cultural heritage and maritime history from the old Zuiderzee region. With the closing of the Afsluitdijk on May 28, 1932, the Zuiderzee was split in two parts: the waters below the Afsluitdijk are now called the IJsselmeer, while the waters north of it are called the Waddenzee.
