Hard To Pronounce Michigan Places | Pure Michigan
Have you ever wondered how Michigan was named Michigan? Before colonization, the now Great Lakes State was home to at least eight Native American tribes throughout the land, one of which being the Ojibwe Indians. The Ojibwe were the first people to openly interact with the French in Michigan, trading furs and knowledge of the area for guns and goods. Through translation, the state of Michigan was named after the Ojibwe Indian word “Michigama,” which means “great lake” or “land surrounded by water.”
With this in mind, we invite you to take a watch some Michiganders stumble their way through some uniquely-named destinations found across the Great Lakes State. Test yourself and learn the correct pronunciations here:
Traverse City, MI: Lovin’ the lake life
A true local-born event, the M22 Challenge is a bike/run/paddle race around Traverse City that gets its participants into the Sleeping Bear Dunes, around the Glen Lakes, and across Little Glen Lake. Athletes from all over the country come to race.
Of course, for the more moderate outdoor adventurer there are less-grueling ways to explore this beautiful landscape. Grab a kayak or a SUP and hit Lake Michigan for a relaxing and fun experience!

Under the Radar Michigan Ep401 Secret Beach
Now, here's a treat for ya ... just north of Empire, on a lonely winding country road is a secret beach that only me and the locals know about. I'd tell you where it is ... but, I've been sworn to secrecy. Now, when you get there, you walk down a long sandy path that reveals an incredible sand bottom blue lagoon that's surrounded by beautiful sand dunes. It's almost a tropical place where the sun, surf and sand melt all your cares away ... And the best part is ... it's connected to lake Michigan by a shallow little river where kids can run and play. Incredible ...
If you ever get the chance .. try and make it to this incredible beech at North Bar Lake ... did I just say the name ?? DARN !!

The unincorporated community of Prudenville is at the southeastern end of the lake, while the unincorporated communities of Houghton Lake and Houghton Lake Heights are on the southwest and west shores. It is an extremely popular resort and fishing area year round. Houghton Lake is the site of Tip-Up-Town USA, a large ice fishing and winter sports festival with several events on the frozen waters of the lake itself. Michigan's largest inland lake covering 22,000 acres. The lake offers great fishing possibilities. Here you will find good fishing possibilities for walleye, pike, bass and bluegill. Yooper Tours: On Da North Country Trail - Section 1
A spontaneous hike across Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the North Country Trail. I couldn't do it all in one time, so I broke the 550 miles into 9 sections.

Great Getaways: Ice Fishing at Gulliver Lake - Gulliver, MI
clip from Great Getaways episode #8055HD Frozen Stiff (Michigan's Upper Peninsula)
Travel Planner -
Ice fishing is really a personal sport and a hard one to understand if you have never done it. If sitting in 20 below temperatures watching a hole in the ice for something to pull your bobber down sounds pretty miserable to most people, but not the avid ice fisherman. Our guides to some frozen stiff fishing would be Winch and Connie Dillard. Connie is the Manistique Chamber of Commerce Director and decided the best place to go would be Gulliver Lake right in the little town of Gulliver.
