Owosso is a city in Shiawassee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 15,194 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the eastern side of Owosso Township, but is politically independent. The city was named after Chief Wasso, an Ojibwa leader of the Shiawassee area.. Pere Marquette 1225 is a 2-8-4 steam locomotive built for the Pere Marquette Railway by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio. 1225 is one of two surviving Pere Marquette 2-8-4 locomotives, the other being 1223 which is on display at the Tri-Cities Historical Society near the ex-Grand Trunk Western coaling tower, in Grand Haven, Michigan. Nickel Plate 765 is also a Lima built Berkshire very similar in appearance and specifications to the Pere Marquette engines. It is perhaps most famous for serving as the basis for the locomotive in the 2004 film, The Polar Express. The Pere Marquette Railroad used 1225 in regular service from the locomotive's construction in 1941 until the railroad merged into Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1947; it remained in use on C&O's Michigan lines until 1951. It is open to the public, and currently contains over 1700 varieties of plants hardy in mid-Michigan. The Dow Gardens were started in 1899 by Herbert Dow, founder of The Dow Chemical Company, and gardener Elzie Côte, on eight acres of flat, sandy land. The Herbert H. Dow House is located at the southwest corner of the gardens. The Alden Dow House and Studio are on the west side of the gardens, separated by a pond. Subsequent generations of the Dow family have continued to develop the gardens.

The Mackinac Bridge is currently the third longest suspension bridge in the world. The Mackinac Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere. The total length of the Mackinac Bridge is 26,372 feet. The length of the suspension bridge (including anchorages) is 8,614 feet. The length from cable bent pier to cable bent pier is 7,400 feet. The length of the main span (between towers) is 3,800 feet. It cost $4.00 for a standard passenger vehicle to cross. It is also a section of Interstate 75.The bridge crosses the Mackinac Strait linking the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with Michigan.02

Owosso - 1225 Steam Engine Train - South Cedar Street Crossing

An excursion run leaving Owosso, Michigan, late in the afternoon on November 28, 2008. The train is pulled by the 800,000 pound (including tender) Pere Marquette 1225 locomotive ― the largest operating steam engine locomotive in Michigan. Steven Spielberg's production company filmed the exterior sights and sounds of the 1225 for the computer rendering of the movie, Polar Express, and Lionel Model Trains has also recorded the sounds of the 1225 for its new electric toy model train, The 1225 ― the namesake of Owosso's 1225.

Owosso, Michigan, is the headquarters of the Steam Railroading Institute, which includes a museum and other facilities. The institute's 3.5 acre grounds also hold a roundhouse, the Pere Marquette 1225, the 82,000 pound Flagg Coal Company steam switch engine, the 136,000 pound Mississippian steam locomotive (under restoration), plus many train cars and other rolling stock from railroads in the United States and Canada.

The Owosso-based Steam Railroading Institute was the location of TrainFestival 2009, which was celebrated from July 24th thru July 26th, 2009. The festival drew approximately 36,000 visitors to Owosso from around the world. On display were additional steam-era equipment, including the 1225's sister steam locomotive - Nickel Plate Road's 765 - and The Southern Pacific Number 4449: The Daylight.

Owosso, Michigan, is also the headquarters of the Great Lakes Central Railroad, which provides freight service to Northern and Southern Michigan, and chartered passenger rail service. The Great Lakes Central Railroad will soon be providing daily commuter rail passenger service in Michigan as well.
